She refused to have her DNA tested to confirm/deny her ancestry on the PBS series with Gates. Her family also advised her not to get tested. I bet the real native americans are rolling in their graves. Again, follow the money.
@andreestes99 - Be sure to disclose for all of us a description of your own heritage, since you're buying into this mediocre challenge/ratings ploy. Maybe she doesn't need to prove to an audience what her bloodline may be. Nobody should be forced by the media to own up to who they are in that respect.
Well, I just logged and and what do we have here? A long, thoughtful interview with a writer who is deeply involved with her people and cares very much for them, followed by a couple of "Indians" attacking each other tooth and nail, one of them fighting over who is the most "Indian."
I'm German, English, Scottish, Swedish, Italian, Belgian, Dutch and Irish who became a Jew by choice and I have to say that display was pitiful.
Fragile twigs become strong when bundled together.
@ElProximo If she is a quarter native it is likely that is the majority of what she is. I am a white woman who grew up in Appalachia. No way a white suburban woman and I love her books. They board my spine and make me want to do what's right no matter how courage I need. You sound very angry. I hope I never sound like this, geez. It is bad.
@ElProximo Calling Eldrich pathetic or desperate at all just shows who ever you are, whatever you think is about you not anything else. I think you are probably a crazy person. shut up.
Oh, and the desperation you nons display while attempting to cling to any sort of "Native" is pathetic and telling. No one gives a shit about your weak genes, qallunaat. :)
Nope, unlike you I was born and raised into my culture. You're just a whiny white North American, most likely bitter because you couldn't get a book deal. You are clearly obsessed with Erdrich. Hahaha, a cracker calling me an apple. That's a joke.
@mondotrasho maybe you are the crazy person. I think the way you talk to each other proves human holding capacity is maxed out on this planet and we are all like stuffed passengers on the subway, we want to get out and go home. Your fighting here is so. very. sad.
First off, it's obvious you're a bitter outsider so no one cares about your one-drop (or rumored ancestry, w/e). Louise was, unlike you, raised with a sense of who she is. Being 'Native' is more than just genetics, ancestry, and how you are perceived by cultureless jackasses - it's community, language, oral tradition. Her family's known AND she's enrolled w/ her band. GTFO. - A Hopi/Navajo w/ more Indian blood in her pinky than you've in your entire body who views Louise as 'nish!

shes stupid who rights about pointless stories. i didnt enjoy reading about a young teen having a gay experience with an older man in "the beet queen". It was also very boring. and she cant be too famous if i hadnt even heard of her before being assigned to read her book
I'm reading 'The Bingo Palace' right now, which I didn't like at first, but really love now. A real pity that you let your discomfort about sexuality get in the way of any critical perspective. It's obvious to everybody who reads your comment.
its not about sexuality. its about the fact that a boy was taken advantage by an older man. thats disgusting. but you find that ok, by all means tell the world
You have a really simplistic way of looking at this, which is a real pity because 1. Erdrich never said it was okay, and 2. neither did anybody here. It's a complex issue, but you're looking at it with a very limited approach and I think your criticism is fairly weak, to say the least. Not liking the book is fine, but accusing it of condoning sex with a minor? Come on, that's just silly.
My sister in law says she's been Indian her whole life and nobody is going to tell her to call herself something different now. Don't worry about it...
