They just did it in the angle so that the disconnected part looks connected, and then had someone walk through the disconnected part as if it was connected and before anyone else could follow him they changed the camera angle so that the disconnected part looks disconnected, so that no one can follow the guy that allready went.

What they mean by impossible is that if you look at the way the penrose stairs were originally drawn it is impossible to contain that shape and still be real, other impossible objects like this are penrose triangle and a good picture called false perspective by William Hogarth.
