I think the NES can do alot of stuff. Look at Link's Awakening on Gameboy, it had an effect like this with the Dream Fishy thing.
The NES can even do 3D - just look at Elite!
And one more thing. I think it might be able to do resizing too - look at Super Mario Bros 3 - in World 4, the supersized stuff looks like it's resized. Anyone who's in on the tech side help me out here?
Well dunno. There are people who can do better stuff called demos on NES and other 6502 processor jusing system(mostly on commodore 64). Go and check out "High Hopes" demo by aspekt. :-)
This tech demo dosent even show any tracmo skills and thats not real 3d its just a huge scaled image doing wobbler.
You've got a point. But to the average Joe, the NES was only a step above the 2600. One of the things you didn't see on the NES was warping, like this. It was mostly all standard 2D stuff, no scaling, no rotation, no multi scrolling.
With things like this, I like to show off stuff people didn't know the NES could do.
Well the hardware isnt capable directly to those but 6502 is fast enough to make them by its self and i have seen it done that way. So its possible!
Example Battletoads had multiscrolling, there have been some small intros that have had rotation and there are demos and this effect that haves some kind of scaling.
You dont need its own hardware to all of the stuff ;) processor can do the job many times!
ps . grammarerrors are possible because im in a hurry and i dont have eng. as native language.
I realize that. In fact, Shatterhand, Mega Man 5, Recca (ESPECIALLY Recca) and a couple others did that.
The point I'm trying to make here, however, is that most of the people who have totally forgotten the NES, think that it's nothing more then a step above the 2600.
Speaking of which, have you seen Stage 2 of Recca? Warping like this, fast gameplay, and TONS of enemies on the screen. People still won't believe when I tell them it's an NES game.
Well there are some demos made for Commodore 64 (it had similar hardware as NES) that have thousands object flying around, have to remember that C64 was meant to show only 8 sprite at the same time.
( example. Tower Power by Camelot )
In Regga the second stages background effect would been a lot cooler, faster and better if was a wobbler effect.
(Theres a wobbler effect in DTC demo by RAMLAID / ARKOS and BEB / OVERLANDERS [but Amstrad uses mask and not sprites] )
But what is my final point and to what i have been leading in my past messages is :::
Really you can do all the same stuff on atari that you can with NES. Atari only suffers from the lack of quality in its effects and gfx.
Proof to that is demo(yeah im using demos for examples because they are usally having the best effects and gfx on the system) called Doctor by Trilobit
Actually, in some ways it surpasses the NES, in terms of color, and the speed of certain effects that the NES wasn't designed to do. But in other ways the NES clearly wins.
@animefreak2346 there's more to it than that, though. Even if the NES can do something, it doesn't mean they're willing to take the time to incorporate (what is likely) such complicated code that offers so little to the gameplay. Furthermore, once you add enemies, etc., it really starts to tax the processing capabilities of the system.

there is some scaling in battletoads I think (the small spaceship in the intro) and nes can do ray tracing (someone made a tech demo)

I mean ray casting, lulz

tech demos on the nes, luls

The point is that NES can do better than this.

So in that way Recca havent never supriced me in any way(but its a good shoot em up still <3).
But you really think should check out high hopes by aspekt for NES (I saw it live at the party where it was relesed).
Theres some real skills!

The 2600 is not just one step down from the NES.
Although it can do this kind of stuff as well.
Actually, in some ways it surpasses the NES, in terms of color, and the speed of certain effects that the NES wasn't designed to do. But in other ways the NES clearly wins.

Good point...
Although I find it interesting to see things like this. Though there are quite a few games on the nes that show off some impressive effects.
