Right call... but he's gotta make it known LOUDLY! Call dead ball immedately, and if he has to sell the call, then sell the call. But the way he made the call leaves some room to question it. The front foot was in front of home plate when contact is made, batter is out of the box, and is therefore out.
yeah really i evaluate officials in my state and i think its so funny listening to parents make an ass of themselves because they dont know what theyre talking about.
Screw the parents they always bitch at the umpire at my games and they're wrong every time.
i.e. I'll be pitching and i have this move where I pick off the runner at first before coming set and the parents always just yell "THAT'S A BALK" when I clearly stepped off before throwing it.
looks like an obvious call to me... although in this case i like to give the benefit to the batter... i was a lefty who bunted and got away with it more than once...
Blues should give the benifit of doubt to the batter. We don't make this call unless it is bigger then Dallas obvious.
The ENTIRE foot must ALL the way out of the box. Any part of the foot on line and he is legal. Unless he steps on the plate or all the way in front of plate give the batter the benifit of doubt.
If it does happens be ready when the coach comes out. Say he stepped ALL THE WAY in front of the plate. The batter did it, not you. There's no where to go from there.
Please don't use "Blues" when you mean umpires. Especially since you allegedly are one. You should talk professionally if you expect people to take you seriously in our business.
Good call from the angle we have. Batter can't take that many steps and still be in the box. However, mechanics should have been louder and more definitive. Hustle out from behind the catcher, yelling, "TIME! TIME! BATTER'S OUT! HE WAS OUT OF THE BOX!" But then, from the looks of that umpire, he doesn't hustle much anymore. Too bad. He made the right call, but lack of hustle, poor mechanics, and poor physical condition hampers his credibility.
I've seen slap bunting a lot in Softball. Usually It just looks like they are running out of the box. But when they actually make contact with the ball both feet are in the box. But I do know what your talking about.
Wrong rule, mark1954mark. 7-3-1 covers delaying the game by leaving the batters box. (c) is one of the exceptions where, if the batter misses or pulls the bat back, he is not penalized for delay. If he makes CONTACT 7-3-2 applies: "A batter shall not hit the ball fair or foul while either foot is touching the ground completely outside the lines of the batter's box or touching home plate." Penalty: the ball becomes dead immediately and the batter is out. Notice that there are no exceptions.
True feet ON the lines is not out of the box. But there is no way from this video you can tell that his feet were on the line. But, from this view it looks like the umpire had cause to make this call. Since he had the best view, he gets the benefit.
I see what your saying, expecially on a call not seen often. Should the ump ignore it? As for a "benefit", no one gets the benefit, that would be unfairly officiating for one team. For me I have to CLEARLY see the batters foot outside the box, on the ground when making contact. I would absolutely call it. On the video it looks like the batters foot was out there. Since this umpire was right there, we should give HIM the benefit. A tough call not seen often, doesnt mean it was the wrong call.
you can see he was way out of the box when he touched it.... i am not saying i can see the lines because i can't but it looks like he started mid box and took a nice step forward as he touched it.
That could very well have been the correct call, but this umpire doesn't sell it. Umpire needs to show hustle and solid mechanics, rather than casually walking out and gradually bringing arms semi-up.
Im curious on where you think the umpire has to hustle to? The play was right in front of him ...he doesnt have to go anywhere! Kid was clearly out of the box and was a great call.
He needs to hustle to where he ended up. He went to the right place, sure, but he shows signs of laziness by walking there, and giving his mechanics during said walk. He doesn't HAVE TO, sure, but good umpires show hustle.
I think i know what you mean. Youre talking about the actual signaling of the call right? He really doesnt even have to move in front of the plate, but can be louder and more agressive with the call i agree.

Nothing worse than whiney parents that chirp at the blue who made the correct call that didn't go their way. Once again Blue 1 - Parents 0.
