INDGirl, I saw Mr. Mancini on tv interview saying it was his favorite song which he wrote specially for Audrey in a very short range (one octave and one-and a half tones), although I believe they got someone else to sing her part. It's been my favorite Mancini tune ever since I heard Charlie Byrd acoustic guitar play it with flutist Mario Darpino on beautiful duet album called "Delicately" back in the 60's.
I think you got several things mixed around - Two for the Road was Mancini's favorite song, Moon RIver was written by Mancini/Johnny Mercer to fit Hepburn's vocal range who did in fact sing that tune in Breakfast at Tiffany's; but Hepburn had her voice dubbed in My Fair Lady by Marni Nixon.
If I every check that out about Two for the Road vs Moonriver and find out different, I'll get back to you. In the meantime, thank you. Both are beautiful songs. Mancini's tunes had a lot of love in those melodic lines.
I knew it was Marni Nixon but could not recall her name at the time. She played the lead role in My Fair Lady in City Center on 55th street after Broadway was done. I saw her, she was great of course.
I just checked to make certain I wasn't mistaken again - about Marni Nixon this time. Yes, I was correct, she played City Center Light Opera Company on 55th which was her Broadway debut. Reading it brought back a flood of memories. I recall that very season I saw at City Center: MFL, Porgy & Bess, Most Happy Fella, Oklahoma. Now I'm not certain again, I think it was that one season, 1964. In any case, they were the good times. God bless us all. ciao.
I'm remembering something else before I check it out. I'm recalling that Mancini did in fact write Two for the Road for Hepburn but they canned it. Maybe it was too difficult to sing regardless. Moonriver is a much simpler tune and Audrey was no singer whatsoever. I talk too much; I'll check it out.
Grazie Tommaso e Maurizio; such a beautiful rendition of "Two for the Road...bravissimo! This song has such a bitter-sweet quality to it which is indescribable.
Mancini (pronounced man-chee-ni) is one of our greatest popular composers..."Moon River", "Days of Wine and Roses", Peter Gunn Theme", Pink Panther...just to name a few.
Unfortunately, his passing came much too early. He is reatly missed!
I once heard an interview with Audrey Hepburn, recounting how the powers that be wanted to eliminate the song Moon River from the movie Breakfast at Tiffanys (can you imagine?) and Audrey told them, over her dead body, it was the best song "Hank" had ever written.....She was referring of course, to her friend Henry Mancini. Did you know that Two for the Road was Mr. Mancini's favorite song, of all the songs that he wrote? It was. Nice chatting with you.
Versione stupendo! Two for the road is my favourite Mancini. Anybody, anybody to help me get hold of the Steve Ross version? My right arm is yours for life...............
