This is exactly what I want, however figuring it out is proving to be quite complicated. I've got XBMC Live. Any really solid URL's you can direct us to for tutorials?
are these sku.14965 from dealextreme as i am thinking of using these for a ambilight mod just want to know if they are easy to work with and if they look good or better in real life?
You mentioned somewhere that this works great for visualizations like in this video but not so great for movies, tv shows, etc. Is there a way to set this up using something colorless like clear LEDs? I'd like to get some ambient backlighting that automatically adjusts to the brightness of my plasma tv, sort of like the dynamic contrast on my computer screen.
@NotShorty That's possible, get a led strip with real rgb leds (not one with separate leds for each color because you'll get colored shadows) then in the boblight config set the saturation to 0.0, that will produce only grayscales.
Then you can set the adjust value for each color in boblight.conf to set the final color of the leds, you probably want to have a warm white color.
Are you running XBMC on an old Xbox, or in Linux? If you're using Linux could you point me towards any websites with a beginner's guide please? I've found plenty of information about the hardware, but little about the software (in Linux - most is about Xbox modchips). Thanks in advance. This looks brilliant by the way.

Hey pike,
You mentioned somewhere that this works great for visualizations like in this video but not so great for movies, tv shows, etc. Is there a way to set this up using something colorless like clear LEDs? I'd like to get some ambient backlighting that automatically adjusts to the brightness of my plasma tv, sort of like the dynamic contrast on my computer screen.
BTW, this video is awesome. Thanks for any tips!
