In Anthony's biography "Scar Tissue" he actually talks about how he was pissed off at John for this gig. Keep in mind this is also right before John left the band. So the idea that John was trying to put a spin on the song sounds very unlikely; it seems more like he just didn't want to be there. He didn't like doing flashy gigs and I'm sure SNL was one of them.
