Notice: When the small screen is all Pre-Recorded.
At 0:20 you can see the camera fully but on both the bottom corners of the box there are small oblong panels, they hold the mirror but at the start of the trick its a see through mirror with a seal but at 1:09 the front part of the wooden box is closed that's were the camera man pulls the seal off and wraps it round the camera in a square shape and at 1:28 the front of the box explodes off showing the camera man in front of the mirror.
There is a minicam concealed in the box. It provided the feed (note the quality and the barrel distortion). At the end in the reveal it remains hidden behind the wooden surround at the top which does not collapse.
The camera is on a platform and tilts back as soon as the box is closed and goes off into a trapdoor concealed by the stairs. Because of the tilt, it can be half the height of the camera and the joints of the trapdoor are concealed by the staircase.
What you are seeing is not the full coverage but like all escapology tricks the escapee - in this case the camera - does its stuff as soon as it is hidden. Therefore we have to assume the camera footage from the box is pre-recorded. Having said that where does the camera go? The area right behind the box is a set of raised steps so no exit there. Hard to imagine a trap-door but what are the options? Is that studio fitted with a false floor that can accomodate a six-foot tall camera?
I still don;t get this one. It's nigh on perfect. The camera footage is perfectly synched to studio footage, and remember, this is before micro cameras were available. The smallest camera was about the size of a shoebox, and you'd still see that when the box 'exploded'
@stantz {The camera footage is perfectly synched to studio footage, and remember, this is before micro cameras were available. The smallest camera was about the size of a shoebox, and you'd still see that when the box 'exploded'}
Haha, perhaps a slogan from the period will help you out of your predicament -- Is it live, or is it Memorex.
Why is the cameraman holding the feed cable when the camera 'disapears'? Cameraman hold either the focus arm or the height adjustment on the pedestal; the cable is attached to the side of the camera body, away from the operator. Similarly it could not have been 'yanked out' without causing enormous damage - this cable is not like the one from your mouse to your computer, it is a precision piece of equipment, attached to another very expensive precison piece of equipment.
@yellowbelly06 That is VERY true. This cable on this Link 125 camera could not just be "yanked out" I believe this Link 125 camera cost about half a MILLION pound's (Back in 1984) I still don't think they were as good as an EMI-2001...But that is just my humble opinion! The BBC started to "Phase out" there elderly EMI-2001 camera's in the early 1980,s. However they were still in use right up until July 1991. To record an episode of Eastenders. Sorry I am just waffling now!
The actual footage from Camera 4 would be easy to cut and swap it for some prerecorded footage. What I'm more concerned about is where the actual goddamned camera itself went!
When the forklift starts lifting at 0:55 there's a bit of a wobble (at about 0:58) when Paul is mostly off screen. If they cut to a pre-record, this is the only moment (in what's shown on this video) that they could do it at, which would also explain why the volunteer is out of shot at this point, and Daniels could have just got his timing and movement perfect so you don't see the difference. If it cut while his face was on the screen the cut would be obvious.
Well, I mean from when the camera is moved in, not from the start. A commercial would be an easy way to connect the feed under the guise of moving the camera into the box. The cameraman, of course, yanks the feed at the gunshot.
Looking again, maybe it's not a mirror in the window since the other guy probably isn't in on it and would notice a reflective surface. The video is definitely not from a studio camera, though. It's mounted in the ceiling. The disappearing camera I don't know, though...
A video no one's posted the solution to? Well I think I see the video bit: The video at 0:30 seems lower quality and the window frame has these triangles cut out of the video making it an hexagon... The widow frame at 1:08 is just made from two planks with the middles cut. It should be a perfect square. My bet is on a mini camera in the ceiling (which doesn't fall apart at the end) and an angled mirror in the window. The video feed is connected from the start. Cont...
0:55 - 1:02 if it is a pre-recorded video this is the only point I can see where it could cut from live to a pre-record; Daniels leans out so only his sleeve is still visible. He seems to be looking under the crate, but why would he have to? It's the only point I can see (and obviously the trick is cut up here) where he could plausibly switch the feed. Just a guess though.
Dunno how it's done but here are a couple of things to consider:
1. The uneven base of the case - look at the way it rises at either side (where the cameraman is standing) and the dip in the middle is the perfect size for the base of the camera.
2. The volunteer is only seen on the camera view when it is on the ground, not when it rises. These two points suggest to me it never moved off the ground.
3. Maybe the cameraman wouldn't have to know how it was done; he was just told to act surprised.
Why's the dude holding onto the camera cable as soon as the sides drop. Surely if it had genuinly dissapeared he wud have had to pick up the cable from of the floor. He's acting, the camera video is a well rehearsed copy and the camera dissapears through the trick floor before it is lifted up ta-daaaaaa!
over the part that knows it cannot be there! That is why he is having an irrational but TOTALLY genuine reaction to what has just happened. It's simple science and simple knowledge of the way ther human mind and body works!
As for the person that claims the cameraman knew where the camera went to, he didn't! The audience member freely picked him. If the cameraman did know then all of the cameramen would've had to have known. A magician would never tell any one where it had gone to!!
ehem..... Simple 'science' and simple knowledge would tell you that cameras, people, elephants etc DON'T just dissappear. So... I'm afraid... everything you just said is wrong. Of course the cameraman knew
Yes any amateur could pull off that reaction but as it was done in real-time it is obvious the cameraman is TOTALLY genuine in his reaction. He isn't going to just stand there when his camera has just vanished as he is using it, is he? everyone in his situation would immediately look arould themselves to see wherfe the camera had gone to! It looks silly, i know but we would all check to see the camera is not behind us because the part of aur brain/mind that is telling us to wins out
You can clearly see the cameraman's reaction is TOTALLY genuine. Everytime I see this trick I am absolutely astounded by it. Isn't it funny how every time a person sees a trick, whatever type the trick is the amateur magician in each of us immediately comes up with ridiculous thoughts abd theories as to how the trick was done?
because it's an "on tv" trick its easy to manipulate the little screen on the bottom left hand corner by prerecording what it would look like for the camera when it is moved and just staging the background to match the camera
BUT making the camera dissapear is another thing i cant explain ^^
i don't know who did it better it was a very good trick. i don't know why i'm typing this, nobody posted a comment three month between me and the last guy.
calm down, ill admit david copperfield stole this illusion from him, but whenever david copperfield steals an illusion he makes sure he changes it up a little bit and definately makes sure he does it better than it was done before, u cant deny that copperfields version is better.
nah. Look at Paul's movements on the box camera and the high-shot camera (crane cam or dolly cam) when he's telling the forklift driver to lift it up. They are EXACTLY the same in EXACTLY the same moments. There's no chance that that could be a prerecorded precise scene of the studio.
....this clip is from 1984...they didn't have the technology to do a disappear this smooth and complicated using camera tricks. he says 'this is a trick with a camera...' It's obviously an illusion, but considering it was in front of a live audience, I doubt you could chalk it up to visual effects.
