An excellent list. I like that this list doesn't really resemble the AFI's 100 Movie List, nor does it look like They Shoot Pictures' list. It's a very unique list but still manages to be a very good representation of great movies.
@TheTmny876able 12 angry men, on the waterfront and the good the bad and the ugly are in the top 150, but don't think forbidden plant or the thomas crown affair made the top 1000!
good list, i wish shaw shank made it in the top 30, but i understand why it didn't; BEAUTIFUL FILM! but it didn't contribute anything to films; all of the films mentioned in the top 30 did something for the first time/something unique that has impacted the way we watch films (don't know how Sergio's Leone's "Once upon A Time in America" did anything...great film though).
Vertigo over Psycho? By what criterion? And 2001 before The Third Man? How pretentious. By any standard, Shawshank must be in any top 10. What is moviemaking all about anyway? Artistic shots or entertaining the public? Some Like It Hot not in any top 20? Bolloc......
@sfukridge The list was compiled from the results of a poll for visitors to our website. If you dislike the result then feel free to submit your own 100 greatest list to be included in the 2011 list. The link to the website is below the video.
@sfukridge Your opinion is valid but you have to take any movie list with a pinch of salt. After all how do you really quantify how good a film is? How would really decide that psycho is definitively better than vertigo. All of these films are brilliant, my favourites being andrei rublev, fanny och alexander and otto e mezzo
@sfukridge Its a good list. He recognises the classics and the order is up to him. Vertigo is better than Psycho by the way. I love Shawshank but it is not better than any of the top 10 in that video.
@sfukridge Please chill hater and realize that any sort of taste is absolutely individual matter. Me personally would put Ghost Dog the way of the Samurai in top 10 and Vertigo wouldn't make even top 20..........anyways i think this was very well put together and the pendragon certainly can appreciate good movies..........Peace:)
I'm sure I'm not the only one who got chills watching this. Watching this video makes me think to myself... Even if the world has stopped making truly GREAT movies, we've been given all the movies we may ever need.
Wow, this was really a well thought out list. I've only seen about half of these movies, but I love most of the ones I have seen. There's a few I could think of to put on here (Such as Scarface and The Big Lebowski and a few others) but that's just my opinion. Nice list.
i know the penultimate track is deborah's theme but it doesn't sound the same as the one from the once upon a time in america soundtrack. where did you get that from?
The Godfather is No1?? a masterpiece yes...but honestly! and singin in the rain surpases Dr Strangelove?? mmm...not very good, though I will se the films I haven't on the list. I agree about Andre Rubliof though...
Rocky would definitely have to make my own personal Top 30. The story, film score, and cinematography are amazing. Also would need to have Goodfellas in there too.
Wow, this is a fantastic list. Well done. I would have liked to see Andrei Rublev in the top 10, but I'm just glad it's recognized, even in the top 25. Is Come and See (Idi i Smotri) in any of the other parts of this list?
this is by far the best movie list i've ever seen, seeing once upon a time in the west, touch of evil, once upon a time in america, barry lyndon, a matter of life and death along with the likes of citizen kane, 8 1/2 and the godfather is where they should be
Music - The main theme to Road to Perdition by Thomas Newman (not sure of the exact name), Blade Runner music by Vangelis, We'll Meet Again sung by Vera Lynn, Nemo Egg (Main Title) by Thomas Newman, The End by The Doors, Intermezzo from Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni, Human Nature by Eric Serra, Debra's Theme by Ennio Morricone, Thus Spake Zarathustra by Richard Strauss, the final theme is from The Godfather 3 soundtrack but not sure of actual name.
a few surprises here, no thrid man, some like it hot, the searchers, city lights, psycho, sunrise, the passion of joan of arc, la dolce vita, the general and sunset blvd.
But 12 angry men places at 618th????
i hope that in the future it cracks atleast the top 100, it's my second favorite movie of all time
If u watch part one you'll find most of those films between numbers 31-60. Third Man is 26th. The 2010 list is currently being published and I can say that 12 Angry Men is at least in the top 400.
Good job thependragon81... it's a daunting task; a tough job to narrow them all down. You did it as well as I believe anyone could, although we'd all do it different....... I think the average would come out to about what you have....... thanks.
From the poll Badlands was placed 141st, American beauty 200 and Silence Of The Lambs 241. Personally I would place Badlands much higher as its a significant film in so many respects and I think American Beauty has some great moments.

Hey your top 30 does not contain ... 'le enfants du paradis' or children of paradise... it should be there in the top 30.. also.. 'Stalker' has to be there.. no movies of kieslowski?? No movies of Abbas Kiarostami, Hu Hsiao Hsien, Tsai ming Liang, Majid Majidi, Jafar Panahi, Wong kar wai, .. well.. well.. I guess you haven't seen enough of east european and asian films
Stalker 98th (a generous placing), Children of paradise only 138th. See part 1 and 2 for Kieslowski & Wong Kar Wai. While I have seen many of the films on the full list the results are from a poll and not my personal choices.
Great list. It's impossible for everyone to share the same opinion for 1st place! I think thependragon81 has created an excellent list of movies that most of us love.
i think i´ll never understand the greatness of the godfather. i certainly believe it´s a great one....but i don´t know, there´s something that probably i don´t get from the film so i may consider it as number one. In my opinion, "once upon a time in america" is much better than coppola´s work. For me, 2001 should be the first one. that movie is years ahead from the rest.
Stalker(Andrei Tarkovsky),The Good,the Bad and the Ugly,Sunset Blvd. and Some Like It Hot(Billy Wilder),,Bonnie and Clyde(Arthur Pen),nothin by Fritz Lang,Francois Truffaut,Jean-Luc Goddard,Robert Bresson,Carl-Theodor Dreyer,Luis Bunuel,Luchino Visconti,Robert Altman,Roberto Rosselini,Alain Resnais.However,the films listed are very good,most of them deserves their places.
Stalker (98), The Good, the bad and the ugly (86), sunset blvd (68) and some like it hot (66) all made the top 100. As for the directors, Traffaut, Godard, and Dreyer each have 2 films in the top 100 and Altman has 1.
I've seen every single film on this list and I can assure you this indeed is a great list-- many of the best.. all though my personal list would be a bit different in order
Can you name me, in order, all the themes used in the slideshow? Some I know, some I don't.
I admire the fact that there are 3 Kurasawa films here. Although I think Kagemusha is missing. I caught a tear after the musket salvo in the battle of Nagashino. Damn sad and magnificent. And the movie was extremely good as a whole.
Music - The main theme to Road to Perdition by Thomas Newman (not sure of the exact name), Blade Runner music by Vangelis, We'll Meet Again sung by Vera Lynn, Nemo Egg (Main Title) by Thomas Newman, The End by The Doors, Intermezzo from Cavalleria rusticana by Pietro Mascagni, Human Nature by Eric Serra, Debra's Theme by Ennio Morricone, Thus Spake Zarathustra by Richard Strauss, the final theme is from The Godfather soundtrack but not sure of actual name.

Gone with the wind was 97th, which is not bad for an overly long piece of American melodrama and I don't think that the Sound of Music even finished in the top 500.
robert de niro is in 4 of these movies and was the main character in 3 and one was a supporting actor and won an academy award for best supporting actor in godfather part 2 and an academy award for best leading actor in raging bull... he really is one of the if not the greatest actor ever
