Every time I hear the studio version, I'm just knocked out....incredible musicians and isn't it about time some one mentions the incredible work of Simon Heyworth??? wow....
We have covered this song in Australia back in the mid 90's, playing to kids in their teens. The reaction of the crowd was quite interesting. Mind you I am talking to kids into Nirvana, Pearl Jam etc.. They weren't sure to clap or boo, but they listened! The music itself definately made an impression! (Then again we were crazy too: who on earth would have balls out there playing Gong covers to hyped up teens? Any of you given it a try ????)
Yes! I Covered Flying Teapot with my friends once at a gig and decided to play the song 1st.. after we finshed the song, we had nothing but still faces and silence for 2-3 seconds.. then a satnding ovation. One of the best nights of my life!
@Codroy17 Allen was one of the principal lyricists for Gong. Other times the words were done by Steve Hillage, Gilli Smyth, Francis Moze, and various others.
THanks OzzProg for posting this. It appears that Gong and Hawkwind were on a similar frequency in the mid 70s -- both had a spacey drone to a lot of their songs and also a sinister, proto-punk drive. This song reminds me of "Hassan Sabah" (I can't remember the exact title).
Gong and Caravan where the two easiest to listen to of the Canterbury scene which was for the most part a Jazz fusion movement and you can hear it here along with the psychedelic stuff.Killer chops and very spacy. It kind of makes you want to load a bong or smoke a joint which I cant do right now due to being unemployed and would hate to fail a drug screen. What facist pigs.
In terms of everyone wants in music (real music fans I mean!) this has pretty much everything.... invention, amazing musicianship, mystique, passion, goosebumps, je ne sais quoi, the wow factor, unpredictability.... it has it all, and we have to thank Gong for this work of genius.
First time i heard this one i was drunk and half asleep laying next to the speakers and i just asked Manon : What's playing? It's You... she answered... WOW!
I've never understood Gong. Ever. I adore all Canterbury Scene but Gong. I just don't get it. And I really do want to like Gong, lol. I like the new album but none of the first few albums.
Hi spillage your here too..And yes moelen is the best man...Such intricate foot work...I Used to try and model meself on Pierres drum work...Guess what..I gave up..lol..Mind you, Joe Blocker is great on Green...
Too bad too few comments have been written about this song and generally on all Gong songs. Those guys are unbelievable. More people should know them...
This song is one the most incredible sounds I ve ever heard in my life.
listen to Melting Euphoria on the youtube. They are similar to Ozric Tentacles and Hawkwind. I also want to recommend to you Michael Tsarion on the youtube. He is a conspiracy researcher/author/lecturer of best quality. Dr. Bill Deagle, Jordan Maxwell, Alan Watt, Leo Zagami, Alexandre Dumas pere are also of high quality.
Funny you should say that, but on Floating Anarchy, and on Angels Egg, the groove loops back on itself, and plays the last two seconds of each side, over and over, in a gently irritating monotony, that gently pulls you back out from what ever drug raddled catatonic trance you've managed to slip into.
Only a small thing, but a thoughtful touch, & much gentler than the needle skidding off the vinyl, and raping it's way across the label like a dose of mindshits. That's really not nice at all.
Master Builder,
Tell me how to make a temple.
Tools and moon stones?
You don't really need them, you know.
Master Builder,
tell me what the temples made of?
Deep inside you,
You can make an invisible temple
from your own imagination if you will.
