The first time I heard this was on their "Crashing Dream" album. I'd taken 2 hits of reeeeeeeeally potent LSD and it sounded...it sounded like it was suspended in mid-air, and time and space and...well, you get the idea.
"Crashing Dream" is one of those seminal albums that puts me in an exact place and time when I hear it, particularly this song...what an amazing pop tune; so nuanced and somber, but not stodgy. I still have this on vinyl.
Wat een onwaarschijnlijk magisch mooie muziek heeft Rain Parade gemaakt. "Beyond the sunset " is still an amazing record. Thanks for posting this video.
I had a casstte tape of Rain Parade's Crashing Dreams, but my 16 year old destroyed it when she was 2. Can anyone tell me where I can buy it in mp3 form for my ipod?
You know, their live album from Japan is one of the treasured jewels of my vinyl empire (along with the Miracle Legion catalog). Too bad that live one will never see the light of CD transfer.
Agreed! "Beyond The Sunset" is great! I recently transfered the old vinyl to mp3 - now I listen to it when cycling to work; a perfect springtime soundtrack!
Me too. BeutiFULLmoni live in japan album. Still sounds freash. go an go an ga an make it dvd or ill outt mine on limewire (no not really) Goose step for me.
As a response to "scarey725", let's NOT kid ourselves. Rain Parade were at best a second tier band when compared to the rich underground scene that bubbled up in Los Angeles circa the early 1980's. Think about it, you had the Minutemen, Dream Syndicate, Black Flag, Flesheaters, X, and Los Lobos, etc. The list goes on. Rain Parade did NOT match those bands.
Rain Parade was easily as good as Chris D's Flesheaters. And every bit as good as Black Flag post Dez. Of the Paisley Underground groups, they were only bettered by Dream Syndicate and Green On Red IMO. Let's not kid ourselves, indeed.
I would respectfully disagree. All those bands mentioned were louder, harder, etc. (And I loved them all, well, except Los Lobos, even opened for the Dream Syndicate back in the day) but didn't have the RP's musicianship or song complexity.
They weren't trying or didn't need to "match" those groups. I regularly saw the Paisley Underground bands and they were each great in their own way. And no... I don't kid myself. I just know what I like and what I think is good. You're entitled to think what you want and so am I.
WTF? Rain Parade and The Dream Syndicate were the TOP tier of the paisley underground! David Roback and Kendra Smith left those bands(great as they were) to form Clay Allison, soon to be called Opal, who were the greatest. When Kendra left in 87, Hope Sandoval took her place, and by 1990 they were Mazzy Star... still playing incredible folk/psychedelic rock long after most of those other "great" indie bands (and the scene they came from) were gone!
Bought Crashing Dream in 1985, after getting the earlier albums. Still have them, still play them. At the time thought that Crashing Dream was the creation of a brilliant, unfulfilled, band at the end of their tether.
It's exciting to see this post. They were one of the best groups out of LA during that era. It's nice that there is a place for curious new fans to see these and other underappreciated bands. I'm enjoying this all over again. Thanks for the post and hope to see more.
Thank God for these videos...this band was so underappreciated back in the day. The neo-psychedelic revival of the mid 80's was great because of these guys. I wish to God Crashing Dream was available on CD!!! By the way, is it just me, or is the audio for this video at a REALLY low volume?
i saw them in a small house in flint michigan on what was probably their only tour in the midwest..must have been about 14 people there. They were so broke they did not have cigarettes..i passed cigarettes and passed them out all night. what a dreamy wonderful experience....they did about 4 songs and left as no one appreciated their beautiful music...
Yeah, that's one of the greatest shames of the crossover to CD. Crashing Dream is an incredible album...and my stupid ex-roommate took the vinyl and left me with an empty sleeve!
"Crashing Dream" is fucking seminal.

I saw them play a small club in St. Louis. They played Crashing Dream (40min.) and walked off. It was a beautiful 40 minutes, though.....
