i tried this on my friend's glasses, it was funny watching his reaction for a few minutes, he then realized the marks were gone midway through his rant. XD
Transitions lenses work by the three reduction-oxidation reactions of
Ag+ + Cl- ----> Cl + Ag
Cu+ + Cl ----> Cl- + Cu (II)
Cu (II) + Ag ----> Ag+ + Cu+
The black you see on the lens is the silver turning into elemental silver from its ionic state, and the oxidation of it again controls its disappearance.
it doesnt dammage them its the type of glasses that change to sunglasses when it senses the sun and goes back to normal inside the laser makes it think its the sun
When you watch a dvd you dont use a powerful laser.
#2 in the making of dvds they mold the dots in.
#3 when writing to dvds the a powerful laser is focused down to a tiny dot, where it is shined for only a fraction of a second, it doesnt melt the plastic because its so fast..it heats up the bit with the dots because it obsorbs the light more.
#3 when writing to dvds the a powerful laser is focused down to a tiny dot, where it is shined for only a fraction of a second, it doesnt melt the plastic because its so fast, but the light heats a dye that changes colour...it heats up the bit with the dots because it obsorbs the light more.
The lenses here are not being melted. They're Photochromic lenses with, little molecules inside that get dark under UV light. To act like sunglasses. The laser is just activating those and after a couple minutes.
These lasers only actually burn dark/black things that absorb the most light.
thats really cool, i never thought to use transition lense glasses to do this.. would you recomend an axiz housing for an open-can diodd, and how much stronger would a blu-ray writer/burner diode be?
Heh, I did that to my grandpa's glasses, since he said they blocked a bit UV-light. They didn't but then I saw the glasses and was freaked out for a few moments until it disappeared, thinking "oh noes, I've ruined his glasses!" xD
I'm assuming those are Transitions lenses in the glasses. They tint to adjust to changes in lighting conditions, so the laser is just causing them to do what they were designed for but only in a specific area (where the light touches).
This did appear to ruin the finish on my glasses with the same wavelength/ power output :(

does anyone know how to remove a dvd laser from a dvd player? and will i need a lens to use it?
nicko240909 2 years ago
If you want UV you need a blu-ray or HD DVD diode. Some won't burn things though.
mathagg 2 years ago
yeah simple, just unscrew, theres two, sometimes 3 laser diodes
one is the actual red beam laser, on a dvd drive, and the other ones an invisible ray. test them out to see which ones which
be carefull, have power off before u turn it on

How can these lasers be so powerful and not melt a plastic dvd when you watch a movie?

Ok, #1
When you watch a dvd you dont use a powerful laser.

1992jamo 2 years ago
1. This is a bluray laser, its not melting anything here but they are powerful enough to melt black plastic and the like.
2. Not recordable media. Those are "burned" in.
3. It doesn't melt the plastic because the plastic doesn't absorb the wavelengths of the laser.
Elbiatch 2 years ago
lasers can be almost any intensity.
what should have added is:
#3 when writing to dvds the a powerful laser is focused down to a tiny dot, where it is shined for only a fraction of a second, it doesnt melt the plastic because its so fast, but the light heats a dye that changes colour...it heats up the bit with the dots because it obsorbs the light more.

Blu-Ray lasers, one step closer to a Star Wars blaster...

I don't think that those flashing lights in Star Wars are lasers. They possibly are superconcertrated plasma bullets rather than lasers...

As expected. They're UV reactive as designed to react to sunlight. I didn't know they reacted so far into violet, though.

it the writing in the glass?
derZiegeuner 3 years ago
why is it doing that?
tmaxxin 3 years ago
cause it's making the transitions lenses think it's sunny and therefore, making it black / darker.
