I think Lea Salonga appeals to the musician in me, and Susan Boyle to the dreamer, who still wishes he were a better musician. I'm glad to be able to listen to both, and we are all fortunate, in that we don't have to choose one or the other.

Susan Boyle is O.K but people only really like her image. She went to the college my mum works at when she was about 50. She was thrown out for stalking teachers.Thats happened at loads of colleges and unis across scotland to her. She isnt really that nice and her voice is only average even not compared to lea. I couldnt do any beter but I know people who could.
There is this incrdible charm susan has. There is a pure quality to her voice that many seasoned singer's have lost. I have heard many 'seasoned singer's sing 'i dreamed a dream' yet i enjoy susan's voice more.

Susan is excellent, but Lea is in a different league altogether. Also, Lea is performing this in a musical, so there is going to be a higher level of emotion and drama, which Susan does not equal in her performance. Both are an enrichment to our planet.
honestly, i don't know why we are comparing the two. it's unfair to susan boyle, since she's just an amateur and lea is a professional. also, susans voice is actually pretty average. the only reason shes so popular is because once everyone saw her appearance, they expected her to do much worse, so her performance obviously went above expectations.
Susan Boyle has a great amateur voice and it is unfair to compare her to a seasoned trained professional like Lea. I have heard both live, Susan deserves credit for managing to capture hearts and bring happiness to many people, but to a musician (I am a musician myself) who has worked with professional singers, there is a abyss between what will stir an audience in a frenzy in a show such as Pop Idol etc and musicians whose body of recorded work stands the test of time. Keep listening :-)

Lea Salonga is a great singer and I love her voice. However, I don't get how this has anything to do with how great or awful Filipinos are. She made it to where she is based on her unique personal qualities, talent, and perseverance which have nothing whatsoever do her being Filipina. People should be recognized by their talent and the originality of their ideas not by their race, ethnicity, or religion, despite the desire of so many, apparently, to live vicariously.
Give Susan her due for her courage to sing this anthem of the musical theatre, Lea her due she is an actress she made it what is for folks like Susan to aspire. We need both in the appreciation of music.
i kinda like Susan's better. IDK y, but i think it's because she has talent that normal people her age doesn't and i'm not sure but i think Lea had some singing or voice lessons to help her control her pitch better. I also believe that Susan's tell a story of struggle trying to get where she at now cause no one has ever gave her much attention until Britain's got talent.

Salonga has a strong, beautiful voice and tone in the low and middle register, but boy does she struggle on those top notes. Maybe she was just having a bad night. And she over-emotes WAY too much. All that hammy "acting" is appalling. Her low notes are solid, but the legato is very shaky...she can't get between chest tones and head tones without shifting gears. Boyle's voice is far more unique, and thrilling, and not hammed up.
I don' t like susan boyle that much. While I do think her voice is excellent and I can imagine myself liking her if she has better training when she was younger, I still think Lea Salonga is da best! She was great in miss saigon, Les Miserables (as both fante and eponine) and some of the most famous songs in the disney movies eg. a whole new world, reflection, are sung by her.
susan boyle is out of time, and sometimes out of tune yet EVERYONE knows who she is, lea hits the notes and is perfectly in time, she puts emotion into the song, yet hardly anyone in america and the uk has heard of her?!

Yes, Lea is fantastic but we cant really compare the two performances, Lea is a pro with years of experience and Susan was (at the time of this recording) a Pub/Karaoke bar singer, its not fare on susan.
Susan's is the live version she sang for the first time under huge stress offcourse it isn't as good as lea's who is a professional singer for like ages....
Truthfully, I prefer Susan's version. Lea has too much ornamentation for me to hear the real feeling in her voice, while Susan lets the song and emotion flow naturally.

Shouldn't really compare them. Lea has been professional most of her adult life. Susan ...only recently (by comparison). Lea is still young (in terms of voice maturity) and still at her peak while Susan is older and her voice would have declined since her youth.
Susan sings well enough and had incredibly good fortune with that tv show. Imagine if someone with Leas' voice quality had been on it...
What does it matter who sings it best. This aint a competition and give Susan Boyle credit for making Les Miserables even more popular than ever, if that could have ever been thought possible and opening up to a new audience. They even used her as a feature for the 25 th anniversary celebration.
They're both singing the same song. I don't think it's unfair to compare them the same. I do like how Susan lets the song carry her naturally. If she had the training and range Lea has, she would be phenomenal. (or, at least, deserve all the attention she has gotten)

This is a very unfair comparison. By this time, Lea Salonga has had so much experience--not to mention, professional training--in theater. She's been in theater a long time before she was even cast in Miss Saigon! EVEN IF Lea should sound better in this comparison, my admiration goes to Susan for (even if unknowingly) being compared with a Tony Award winning performer. What's next? It's really unfair to Susan Boyle to compare her to Lea Salonga. Of course Lea's immeasurably better, but she has also been singing professionally for over 20 years now! Susan Boyle aside, I really think Lea Salonga is the best in the business.
They're both talented in their own way. Here's what Lea said about Susan in a Feb. 2010 interview: " I'm really happy for her.… I think everybody knows now how her audition went where she was pretty much dismissed on the basis of her looks until she opened her mouth. And so at the end of the day, I think it gave a lot of performers much-needed inspiration. Here's somebody who they were ready to pretty much throw out until she started to sing. Well to compare the two would be unfair since lea has age and training + years of experience in her favour. That said, Lea's performance of this does demonstrate why I was never blown away by Susan Boyles performance. There are much more talented and trained singers out there who I have heard perform this song for me to be impressed by ms Boyle's attempt. I believe that had she been a pretty 30 something she would of had a poorer response from the judges.

People should never compare other artist/singer to one another. They are unique, and should never be compared to Lea, or anyone else. @scottishroad35 I disagree. This was an interesting comparison. Lea does handle the low range of this song better than any woman alive. Susan is more natural. But, both Susan and Lea fall short of Ruthie Henshall's interpretation of "I Dreamed a Dream.".
This won't be the role Lea is best known for. But it doesn't matter; she has already proved her greatness on stage. Forget fake Hollywood (movies) - Broadway and London will always have a place for Lea Salonga to showcase her brilliance.

There has been alot of hype about Boyle but it is because of the surprise in her delivery....not in the true essence and perfection of the song as performed by Salonga. I am not denying Boyle is due her cudos. BUT If you close you eyes listening to both versions back to back the ease of Lea's ability to touch your heartbeat is amazing. You can't compare them, Lea is a professional and Susan ( don't get me wrong, she is wildly talented! ) is woman who was at the right place at the right time. She got lucky.
Susan has real problems on the lower parts ("as they tear your hopes apart") and goes so tremolo on the higher parts that it affects her pitch ("but there are dreams that cannot be"). The range of the song seems to be a bit outside her comfort zone.
Lea's voice doesn't have issues with the range. She's also more delicate with the message of the song. She *chooses* her intonation and where she backs off or emphasizes, rather than just letting the music carry her, as Susan does.
Boyle is an AMATEUR.....Salonga is aprofessional singer/actress with a much more trained voice.
As it is Ruthie Henshaw knocks them both into a cocked hat. Best version ever. Worst version I have ever heard?......... Elaine Paige murdering it on stage at some downtrodden fleapit....

When I hear leah sing this song and songs she interpret I couldn't resist but don't stop on getting every detail of her words, my soul would like to separate from my physical body.. Wow! that was fantastic never hear anyone who could take her place everytime she sings the song gets it's heart not from her voice itself but by the life she puts into it, her pitch is not too high but the interpretation is awesome! that made me loved her.
Well she played Eponine you looked at her and said wow "On my own" was ment to be sang by you! And when she came back to play Fantine people said wow, you are amazing enough to be everything.

Lea Salonga is a great singer and I love her voice. However, I don't get how this has anything to do with how great or awful Filipinos are. She made it to where she is based on her unique personal qualities, talent, and perseverance which have nothing whatsoever do her being Filipina. People should be recognized by their talent and the originality of their ideas not by their race, ethnicity, or religion, despite the desire of so many, apparently, to live vicariously.

i kinda like Susan's better. IDK y, but i think it's because she has talent that normal people her age doesn't and i'm not sure but i think Lea had some singing or voice lessons to help her control her pitch better. I also believe that Susan's tell a story of struggle trying to get where she at now cause no one has ever gave her much attention until Britain's got talent.

Salonga has a strong, beautiful voice and tone in the low and middle register, but boy does she struggle on those top notes. Maybe she was just having a bad night. And she over-emotes WAY too much. All that hammy "acting" is appalling. Her low notes are solid, but the legato is very shaky...she can't get between chest tones and head tones without shifting gears. Boyle's voice is far more unique, and thrilling, and not hammed up.

I don' t like susan boyle that much. While I do think her voice is excellent and I can imagine myself liking her if she has better training when she was younger, I still think Lea Salonga is da best! She was great in miss saigon, Les Miserables (as both fante and eponine) and some of the most famous songs in the disney movies eg. a whole new world, reflection, are sung by her.

Yes, Lea is fantastic but we cant really compare the two performances, Lea is a pro with years of experience and Susan was (at the time of this recording) a Pub/Karaoke bar singer, its not fare on susan.

Truthfully, I prefer Susan's version. Lea has too much ornamentation for me to hear the real feeling in her voice, while Susan lets the song and emotion flow naturally.

Shouldn't really compare them. Lea has been professional most of her adult life. Susan ...only recently (by comparison). Lea is still young (in terms of voice maturity) and still at her peak while Susan is older and her voice would have declined since her youth.
Susan sings well enough and had incredibly good fortune with that tv show. Imagine if someone with Leas' voice quality had been on it...

What does it matter who sings it best. This aint a competition and give Susan Boyle credit for making Les Miserables even more popular than ever, if that could have ever been thought possible and opening up to a new audience. They even used her as a feature for the 25 th anniversary celebration.

They're both singing the same song. I don't think it's unfair to compare them the same. I do like how Susan lets the song carry her naturally. If she had the training and range Lea has, she would be phenomenal. (or, at least, deserve all the attention she has gotten)

@enedving Yeah, I can sing the same song and surely it would be nasty to compare myself with Susan (won't even dream of Lea). As an analogy, any newbie can probably play the same tournament with Tiger Woods but to be fair, the organizers have to give him/her a handicap of +18 points, while Tiger gets zero or a "plus handicap".

This is a very unfair comparison. By this time, Lea Salonga has had so much experience--not to mention, professional training--in theater. She's been in theater a long time before she was even cast in Miss Saigon! EVEN IF Lea should sound better in this comparison, my admiration goes to Susan for (even if unknowingly) being compared with a Tony Award winning performer. What's next? Manny Pacquiao vs Mike Tyson???

It's really unfair to Susan Boyle to compare her to Lea Salonga. Of course Lea's immeasurably better, but she has also been singing professionally for over 20 years now! Susan Boyle aside, I really think Lea Salonga is the best in the business.

Well to compare the two would be unfair since lea has age and training + years of experience in her favour. That said, Lea's performance of this does demonstrate why I was never blown away by Susan Boyles performance. There are much more talented and trained singers out there who I have heard perform this song for me to be impressed by ms Boyle's attempt. I believe that had she been a pretty 30 something she would of had a poorer response from the judges.

People should never compare other artist/singer to one another. They are unique, and should never be compared to Lea, or anyone else. Lea is not the only outstanding singer out there, and thank God she isn't the only one. Streisand, Dion, Brightman, etc. At least Susan Boyle is a household name, not everyone knows Lea Salonga. Lea Salonga is a talented actress/singer on broadway beautiful singer, but horrible movie actress

@scottishroad35 I disagree. This was an interesting comparison. Lea does handle the low range of this song better than any woman alive. Susan is more natural. But, both Susan and Lea fall short of Ruthie Henshall's interpretation of "I Dreamed a Dream.".
This won't be the role Lea is best known for. But it doesn't matter; she has already proved her greatness on stage. Forget fake Hollywood (movies) - Broadway and London will always have a place for Lea Salonga to showcase her brilliance.

There has been alot of hype about Boyle but it is because of the surprise in her delivery....not in the true essence and perfection of the song as performed by Salonga. I am not denying Boyle is due her cudos. BUT If you close you eyes listening to both versions back to back the ease of Lea's ability to touch your heartbeat is amazing. You almost feel as if she was singing just to you. I get goosebumps on the inside of my soul.

Susan has real problems on the lower parts ("as they tear your hopes apart") and goes so tremolo on the higher parts that it affects her pitch ("but there are dreams that cannot be"). The range of the song seems to be a bit outside her comfort zone.
Lea's voice doesn't have issues with the range. She's also more delicate with the message of the song. She *chooses* her intonation and where she backs off or emphasizes, rather than just letting the music carry her, as Susan does.

When I hear leah sing this song and songs she interpret I couldn't resist but don't stop on getting every detail of her words, my soul would like to separate from my physical body.. Wow! that was fantastic never hear anyone who could take her place everytime she sings the song gets it's heart not from her voice itself but by the life she puts into it, her pitch is not too high but the interpretation is awesome! that made me loved her.
