Kyle Williams handled the press after the game extremely well. He had a bad game. It's very disappointing, but there's always next year. Can't wait for him to redeem himself in the superbowl next year
Should have been named the starter after this, and into the playoffs. I like Steve Young too, but the job was Joe's to begin with. He earned it, and may have been able to take that team back to the SB, which Young failed to do that season, as a healthy Montana sat on the bench and watched.
never been a niners fan but Joe Montana arguably one of the best qb's period ever(not just niners but nfl) I was in junior high watching him and the niners win big against the Bengals and the Broncos. Most of my family and friends are all niner fans. But when Joe went to KC all my friends straight face sat there and said "well he wasn't all that great, Steve Young is better" which is pretty much the reason I don't think highly of niner fans, im not a niner fan but i think 4 rings is awesome
Was there that night when Joe came back. Candlestick Park was electric with the fans standing ovation. Pouring rain the place was completely packed. What a feeling when he ran onto the field. When he threw the touchdown pass the crowd went totally crazy as Joe was officially back. We had waited so long for his return. An honor to watch and cheer one of the best ever quarterbacks on one of the best SF 49er teams ever. Good times!
Remember this being the year (1991) where the Niners and Falcons were 10-6, but Atlanta got the playoff nod by virtue of their head-to-head wins vs. SF that year. Needless, to say, Mr. Glanville did his silly "California Trophy" strut at Candlestick in '92, and the Niners made the Falcons pay dearly in two blowout victories against the Buzzards that year.
The best ever and I'm a pats fan. This guy was crazy. I don't need to be alive in 88 when they won it or whatever to recognize the greatness of joe montana.
with Montana,Rice and Jones in the offense and Hanks and Sanders in the defense the 1994 49ers would have probably won the superbowl ending their season with 19-0 and defeating their opponents by 40 points margin.from a Packers fan.
@melll101 ok dude alex smith does not suck, everyone says he does but they dont realize that since hes been with the 9ers hes had like 6 different offensive coordinaters telling him what to do that sucked ass now that we have harbaugh who played the position and understands his position turned him around, and look how that turned out a 13-3 season.
@jwjr33 i love niners, and at least they are improving, better than last season where they didn't even make it to the playoffs, we actually have a chance. but yeah, joe montana is WAYYY better than alex smith
@JordanDragonW101 Of Course Joe Montana is better than Alex Smith, when did I ever say different?? All I was saying when it comes to Alex to the people who are bashing him on here is that if Alex were as bad as some here think he is, we would not be 13-3 and set to play our first home playoff game in 10 years. I bet if you asked some of these pathetic teams who are desperate for a QB, many would jump @ the chance to take Alex.
He was average at best the last seven seasons. Jim Harbaugh has done a terrific job with Smith but he will never be the type of QB that can win games by himself when the chips are down. Thats why he's not mentioned among the elite. That team wins games through their running game and tough defense. All Smith is asked is to limit mistakes.
@melll101 you are obviously not a long time niner fan if you talk crap! how many Joe montana's have there been in the NFL...1, Alex is doing the best he can 13-3!
@melll101 Ummm, did you happen to catch the play-off game today, that Alex Smith was playing in the whole time? Yeah....They won, and Alex Smith was a large contributor to that win.
@shimanchunutakara Although Alex will never be a Montana or a Steve Young, he has shown he can be a solid qb with the right personel around him. He will continue to get better with consistency with the coaches. The niners are having a great year. I think Alex deserves some credit.
@KendellBowman LOL!!!!!!!!!! now that was a funny joke 4 super bowls to none, need I say more???? Ok I guess I will, if your going to talk nonsense on a Joe Montana video at least have the vocabulary of a 4 year old, is that too much to ask???
@dclipe Oh did I too. Sadly in this game, Joe's final pass to Jerry ever was a 4 yard out. Damn shame one of those td passes couldn't have gone to the G.O.A.T.
Comparing Brady to Montana is like comparing Lebron to MJ. THERE IS NO ARGUMENT HERE!!!!
It just brought a tear to my eye watching 'The Faithful' cheering and having a good time at the stick in 1992. On that Monday night game vs. the Steelers, that magic is definitely back.

@3ownsu dumb ass Rodgers already has as many rings as young. And I mean that he earned, not the 2 he got while riding the bench. Rodgers is also about to get his second.
@jwjr33 I agree, i said that because McNabb lost so many NFC championship and win 1, Brady lost 1 and wind 4, just that, in superbowls McNabb and Andy Reid are loosers
@reneluar Except Steve Young is the greatest QB to ever play, and McNabb was an overrated piece of shit...an average QB hyped up in typical media fashion because of their desire to see a black QB succeed.
@EmceeNolan lol wow that sound like some ol rush limbaugh type shit....as matter of fact i think you probably stole that quote right out of his mouth....you and rush are both talking out of your asses....not to mention your ridiculous steve young comment...he wasnt even better than joe
@Clegend24 Rush was right. Donovan McNabb is garbage. Piss-poor numbers before the Eagles signed Owens, mediocre ones every year after. And look where he is now. Can't hold down a starting job to save his life. He's trash. A fat, lazy piece of shit who can't hit the broad side of a barn. He's a loser.
Young was better than Montana. The only thing Montana has on him is "rings," which is a stupid thing to judge an individual player by since it's a team sport.
Excuse my ignorance 49ers fans, Redskins diehard here...
I remember watching this game when I was 6. I remember one fan holding up a giant sign: "Through the rain, sleet and snow/ We came to see Joe". I remember Joe's brief but great second-run on the Chiefs where he took them to within one game away from the Super Bowl. My question for fans : When Joe played in this game was it already known that this was going to be his last as a 49er? Did he have health or back issues after this game?
@KillSwitch2 It had been known for some time that this would be Montana's last game with the 49ers as Steve Young had taken over and Montana's contract was up. Montana had taken a violent shot from Leonard Marshal in the 1990 NFC Championship Game against the New York Giants which knocked him out of action for quite some time. This was the 49ers last game of the '92 season and Joe would sign with the Kansas City Chiefs the following summer
thanks for the info, man. Even as a kid I loved Montana though I have no afilliation to S.F. whatsoever. He just always seemed like a class act and a great guy.
His first throw is a typical little 5 yard Montana pass. His second throw is under thrown. They call him Joe Cool. But who wouldn't be cool on a team as complete as those 49ers were?
@filthyswit Well, in 1981 the team was far from complete and Montana carried them to the Super Bowl. Montana's YPA career was over 7 yards which is comparable to other QBs since the WCO era.
How about the energy waiting for him to take the field for the first time? And the noise before he took the huddle? If they dealt young and kept Montana that year and the 2 years after Dallas wouldn't have won the championship games
people out there old enough to remember during the mid to late seventies to early eighties there were no salary caps. Because of the 49ers generous ownership of high talent and thus expensive players they were a cut above every other nfl team in terms of both defensive and offensive talent. Can you inmagine Montana playing with a less than mediocre offensive line unable give him time to pass his play level of play would not have been drastically diminished. that's an absurd notion to disregard.
@jwjr33 Me too..Colin Cowherd sometimes bring up the old Brady-Montana debate..It's getting tired..Isn't it interesting how when Brady goes down, the Pats win 11 games, and when Manning is out the Colts could go winless???
at the time though, no one knew this would be montana's last game as a 49er...joe wasn't traded to kansas city until april of 1993.....i was 8 years old then, and remember this being the first time i stayed up for an entire monday night game....
I was 9 months old when this happen. This mark the last time my father (a 49ers fan) see his favorite NFL player in a 49ers uniform before Montana went to Kansas City. He and my father both have the same first name.
If it weren't for THE 49ERS superior offense and defense montana would'nt have been half the QB that he appeared to be. Brady has demonstrated, unlike Montana his ability to find and hit multiple receivers, whereas Montana was focused on two maybe three.
@greg4161 were you even old enough to remember montana play? He made three reads before he finished his three step drop, and often times hit his fourth option on a play.
@greg4161 Montana did not throw one interception in his Super Bowl career. Not one. 4 championships, 3 SB MVPs, and Not one loss in the SB. The numbers speak for themselves, and anyone old enough to remember, in which case you are obviosuly not, knows that #16 had a golden arm that was at its best when the most was at stake. Do your homework before you start talking that bullshit. Oh, btw, he won two SB titles before Rice was even drafted.
TO ALL HATERS.....Go to your team if you are not a 49ers fan and if u say Montana is not overall best quaterback You Can Suck My 49ERS SOCK THAT IS ON MY FOOT RIGHT NOW!!!
I'm so sorry we have to get old.Joe is the most awsome QB ever no one will ever be more liked or famous.I hope i have a chance to meet him before i die and tell him how much inspiration and drive he made for so many of us as teenagers. He's never been in any scandals or contriversity a great role model.# 16 will always be remembered and chirished.
Joe being the QB and as everyone knows is the Heart of the team except for probably @pokenerdgen5 it's not his fault he doesn't know Football. Besides that No QB in 49er lore will ever surpass him. he was the QB on the 1rst 9er SB champion team right then he will always be the most loved. Then he brings 3 more now he's not only the 9er GOAT he's one of the NFL GOAT period
@NativeNavajo1 I'm glad you get it and I appreciate your RE cosigning my post! Joe gets a ton of respect from current and retired NFL players and that probably means more to him than all the posters on youtube . But when posters message that Joe's success was lucky or only because he had Jerry or Bill Walsh or what ever they use to try to diminish his carer I'll defend it like a 9er faithful should. Stats are meaningful check out football reference . Joe owns a lot of # 1 stats in post season
@tellthetruthg Thanks if people doubt Montana all they got to do is look at his time with KC that was a Garbage team and Montana took them to the AFC Championship game they lost but it was still amazing he didnt have Rice on that team but im with you on that
The crowd was louder for Joe in a meaningless 2nd half stint than Young ever had them up to that point. That's all I need to know. I hated the 49ers, but NO ONE> Joe Montana.
I guess what I'm saying is the sports are different. It's obvious that a football player isn't necessarily a baseball player. The opposite also holds true. I doubt many baseball players could play any position in football, so the big question is this.... if the New York Yankees played the New York Jets in a basketball game who wins? Alright... silly question, but comparing baseball to football is also silly since they are both so different games that require a different skill set.
@LeBronHasBadFootWork I'm not even sure what you mean by this comment. Could you please define "level of difficulty" for me? If you mean its harder to swing a bat and hit a ball/know by the sound how far the ball will go/throw the little ball and hit a tiny spot then sure those are difficult skills. I can tell you, however, i'd rather try to hit a 100 mile an hour fast ball than be in a 10 yard fight drill w/ Patrick Willis and Ray lewis.
I think the 49ers would have won more super bowls by keeping montana and getting rid of young. Would not have been as good in the long run but the 49ers didn't do anything in the long run anyways. Montana would not have been intimidated by the Cowboys the way the 49ers were under Young. so Montana would have retired in 95 so years 96-98 we'd have to find another qb but young didn't win a super bowl then anyways. Rather Favre dominated the league.
@drvenkman16 Id like to agree, but those years in KC just werent the same Joe. Still we just might have won one more with Joe. Man what two decades we fans enjoyed. Now we have nothing but garbage teams.
I remember watching this game just to see if my favorite football player of all time would come back and play one more time for the 49ers. WOW, is not even enough to explain.
Physical skills aren't everything when it comes to the making of a great qb. Joe had ice running through his veins and thats what makes him above any qb who ever played. This is not even debatable! Ask any player who played in his era and even before his era. They all say he is the best!
@pokenerdgen5 your an idiot dude and don't know what your ssaying.Your talking stats?Brett Farve has ALL the stats in the world for a QB.But ASK MANY NFL coaches, past and present and MANY will tell you they would have Joe Mantanawith 2 minutes to go down by 3 or 6 points in the Super Bowl and 80 yards to go!In this league your measured by SB's and you KNOW that,Marino - 0,Young - 1.Joe hadn't he been hurt here and in other years could have had more SB's and higher stats,
Then he rested as the all time best QB of all time.

people out there old enough to remember during the mid to late seventies to early eighties there were no salary caps.

The Greatest Quarterback of All Time!!! Period!!! Fuck Tom Brady and Fuck Payton Manning!!! Nobody will ever be like the Great One.. Joe Montana...
01villain 3 months ago 2
If it weren't for THE 49ERS superior offense and defense montana would'nt have been half the QB that he appeared to be. Brady has demonstrated, unlike Montana his ability to find and hit multiple receivers, whereas Montana was focused on two maybe three.
greg4161 3 months ago
@greg4161 were you even old enough to remember montana play? He made three reads before he finished his three step drop, and often times hit his fourth option on a play.
princessButtercupp 3 months ago
@greg4161 Montana did not throw one interception in his Super Bowl career. Not one. 4 championships, 3 SB MVPs, and Not one loss in the SB. The numbers speak for themselves, and anyone old enough to remember, in which case you are obviosuly not, knows that #16 had a golden arm that was at its best when the most was at stake. Do your homework before you start talking that bullshit. Oh, btw, he won two SB titles before Rice was even drafted.

@pokenerdgen5
"Was he the BEST quarterback skillswise?"
ya see you threw that word in at the end which I believe is where the confusion is about.
I think when people say "the best" they mean in terms of how effective a QB is and I don't think anyone was more effective than Montana.

Then he brings 3 more now he's not only the 9er GOAT he's one of the NFL GOAT period
tellthetruthg 5 months ago
@tellthetruthg I think Montana is the greatest ever im with you on that one
NativeNavajo1 5 months ago
@NativeNavajo1 I'm glad you get it and I appreciate your RE cosigning my post! Joe gets a ton of respect from current and retired NFL players and that probably means more to him than all the posters on youtube . But when posters message that Joe's success was lucky or only because he had Jerry or Bill Walsh or what ever they use to try to diminish his carer I'll defend it like a 9er faithful should. Stats are meaningful check out football reference . Joe owns a lot of # 1 stats in post season
tellthetruthg 5 months ago
@tellthetruthg Thanks if people doubt Montana all they got to do is look at his time with KC that was a Garbage team and Montana took them to the AFC Championship game they lost but it was still amazing he didnt have Rice on that team but im with you on that
NativeNavajo1 5 months ago

Sharkwalker1 5 months ago
@LeBronHasBadFootWork I'm not even sure what you mean by this comment. Could you please define "level of difficulty" for me? If you mean its harder to swing a bat and hit a ball/know by the sound how far the ball will go/throw the little ball and hit a tiny spot then sure those are difficult skills. I can tell you, however, i'd rather try to hit a 100 mile an hour fast ball than be in a 10 yard fight drill w/ Patrick Willis and Ray lewis.

if Joe Montanan started in the 1992 playoffs
I know the 49ers would have beaten cowboys and the bills
alexistheawsome1 6 months ago
I think the 49ers would have won more super bowls by keeping montana and getting rid of young. Would not have been as good in the long run but the 49ers didn't do anything in the long run anyways. Montana would not have been intimidated by the Cowboys the way the 49ers were under Young. so Montana would have retired in 95 so years 96-98 we'd have to find another qb but young didn't win a super bowl then anyways. Rather Favre dominated the league.
drvenkman16 7 months ago
@drvenkman16 Id like to agree, but those years in KC just werent the same Joe. Still we just might have won one more with Joe. Man what two decades we fans enjoyed. Now we have nothing but garbage teams.
