in the books steerpike doesn't have the excuse of being abused in the kitchens - he had only just been employed by swelter when he escaped, not been there since he was 6 years old
i love that, the duchess presented with the cold facts of steerpikes deeds and the one that disturbs her enough to repeat and elucidate upon is " a lunatic dance? here in gormenghast?" wonderful, sure u can read into it about her belief system, of perception of position and duty, that would be dull, but i remark upon it as there's such glorious dialogue through out, i must grab a copy of the novel to read.
I'm sorry but Titus' mom really pissed me off through this whole thing; caring more for her bird and cats then her own children and then realizing she is in trouble towards the end and tries to save herself
they are not related by blood, what she means is they are wet brother and sister, she is titus's wet nurse and thinks of him as one of her own in that way.
This part makes me feel for him... especially when he is playing his flute and talking to the monkey, I think the monkey may be the only creature who has ever shown him love...
This movie reminds me in a way of the movie Perfume, the story of a murderer. Grenouille was evil too, but somehow you felt pity for him... and you wanted him to have his perfume...
LOL the whole castle is terrified by just one smart ,though evil person! It proves that they all were roten with their stupid traditions and narrowmind(espesially the belief that smb is superior if he's born as an upperclass)
This is why I prefer the book it has more nuance. In the book, they're not rotten exactly, just set in their ways and not really narrow minded (I mean, where did Lady Groan come from. In the book it's suggested she was a commoner like Steerpike). They didn't hate Steerpike because he was lower-class. They didn't even acknowledge him or realise his ambition until it was too late. It's hinted Gormenghast is one of the last bastions of humanity in a post-apocalyptic world.
I can agree with that... "Gormenghast is one of the last bastions of humanity in a post-apocalyptic world maybe from what I have seen Steerpike is one of the last bastions... or maybe its Jonathan Rhyss Meyers beauty, dont know, I only seen this part of it..
Yeah. He and Titus are interesting because it's like they're the only ones who seem to react as 'normal' people would regarding their circumstances and upbringing (last bastions of humanity... in the flesh). Might be why they never really think of joining forces - they don't realise how alike they are.
And yes, JRM is a particularly amazing incarnation of male beauty. Shame he doesn't get more stuff like this to do.
@Sapphonouveau If that's how it is in the books, I still find myself siding with Steerpike ambition. Even though I haven't read the books it just seems to me he wants to BE someone. He wants to say, "Look what I've done right under your noses! Now when you look at me, you'll see me!" He's like a strong gust of wind that sends a stack papers flying about. They sure changed a lot for the series. Ah well, it's still good.
steerpike is, to me, the ultimate evil. I think that is what mervyn peak is incredible. my favourite scenes are the battle between flay and swelter, the amount of tension he builds up is ridiculous! and then when barquentine and steerpike duel is also incredible. the seiries is brilliant but it doesnt really do many of the scenes justice. i think its the only book iv read other than many of dickens with such rich characters to study. As for my opinion, steerpike would always have always been bad
@sheppyweppy I agree with what you say about the characters. They are incredible. I must say I think the actors playing them were fantastic and the BBC overall made a good job of interpreting the books which is no easy task. I never did like Titus much, always thought him a nonentity really, and this proves it. Instead of defending his family and castle he runs off after the girl.
Steerpike may have been evil but i admire his gumption and spirit. His childhood was exploititive misery and cruel-no wonder he enjoyed playing a tune on the ribs of the dead aristocracy hee hee. Never liked Titus -i hoped steerpike would kill him when they fought in the ivy.
A lunatic dance? GOOD HEAVENS! Forget the murders and killings, there was a lunatic dance in Gormenghast! WE SHALL NOT STAND FOR IT!

Steerpike most likely would not have been evil if he wasn't abused in the kitchens, but who knows? Just a thought

Umm, you do not know of Steerpike's past. Besides, he was only in the kitchen for a month. Not since he was six, like the BBC miniseries said.
God, the director SUCKS. ASS.

I always thought that Swelter might have been a paedophile... no one could come out of that kitchen undamaged.
phytoalexa 2 years ago
I agree. I think there's a strong hint in the book that Swelter is dodgy in that way.

I remember that too

You're right but still Steerpike did far too much damage to deserve pity. 6 murders remember...as well as driving Fuchsia barmy.
