Not a screwball. Spinning the wrong way. Crappy curve is a better way to describe it, but in actuality it most closely resembles a flat slider. In college if we threw a slider and didn't keep our fingers on top it would sometimes "back up"...meaning instead of breaking a bit down and away (RHP to RH) it would stay up and stay straight. It's a mistake pitch. And it doesn't rise...it just doesn't sink as quickly as other breaking balls. You might get away with throwing it. Once.

When they speak of the Gyroball as a rising fastball, theyre talking about the ball breaks into a rise. Chad is right as well, because its impossible for a ball to break into a rise. The thing about the Gyroball is the way the ball spins, creates the illusion that the ball is sinking when it actually isnt. The batter aims lower, and they strike.

omgg Gyroballs DO not rise. All pitches sinks a little when it gets near the plate. What the gyroball is, is a bullet like spin that reduces the sinking speed of the ball. Basically traveling more in a straight line. This creates the illusion that it rises to the batter but in reality it just moves in a straighter line.
