whats funny is that if they could have recorded the moment they would have,, sick,, good thing we arent so barbaric as the people of the past,, well i hope not anyway,,lol
You'll notice the camera blink just before the ax falls, and the players show a slight shift in position, but I got to give them credit for 1895, and it looked pretty darn real the first couple of times I looked. It must have moved audiences back then too.
They might as well have executed her. Mary Queen of Scots was born in 1542, so when this movie was made she was 353 years old. No wonder she didn't bleed.
@Lemon020202 No it's not real, if you check between 0:08 - 0:09 you will be able to see the edit (cut) in the film. If you notice leading up to the head being chopped off. The guy in the white uniform, just to the left of her head (at 0:08) raises his sword in the air with his hand ascending down to his shoulder, then by the time 0:09 (right before the chop the head of the dummy) the sword is still out, but his hand is now by his waist.
IMDB:A short film depicting the execution of Mary, Queen of the Scots. Mary is brought to the execution block and made to kneel down with her neck over it. The executioner lifts his axe ready to bring it down. After that frame Mary has been replaced by a dummy. The axe comes down and severs the head of the dummy from the body. The executioner picks up the head and shows it around for everyone else to see. One of the first 'camera tricks' to be used in a movie. Written by Sujit R. Varma
@viniciusctba The guillotine is much more useful if you really are to be beheaded..that way there can't be mistakes..what if the executioner doesnt do the job properly..you will end up suffering even more ..imagine the pain..:(
@Omarhada this video is fake, damn, people from 115 years ago are still fooling people today, is it because people were overall smarter back then? or is it because your retarded
LOL, he didn't chop the head off, he just pushed the the rest of the body of the mannequin away and downward so the head would be free to fall. They could have just used a thread.
Great! you can imagine this film (could be) was from 16th century, people are dressing like that (even for them those were old clothes lol), obviously it's from 1985 when my great great grandfather was borning =O
Are you people nuts? Mary Queen of Scots was executed in 1587, 400 years before this supposed film was made. Of course it's fake. There was no such thing as filmin the 16th century. I don't know where this film is from. a silent movie maybe>?

I read in autobiographical account called "Barrio Boy" how people got scared during a strom in sea scence and how the owner had to climb up a ladder to hit the scence to show people it was fake. An another account by Marion Davies, William Hearst's mitress, said that people became afraid over the early 3-D movies with an ape. These events happen often around 1910s.

Apparently people flipped their shit when they saw this in theaters, they thought the actor actually died, even though it's painfully obvious to us that it's just a dummy. First special effects maybe?
I thought the execution of Mary Queen of Scots happened in 1587, long before Edison's Great-Granfather's, Great- Grandfather's, Great-Grandfather was even born.
It's completely historically inaccurate, as if that mattered - in real life it took half a dozen swings of the axe to get the poor woman's head off and it happened indoors at night (something Edison couldn't have begun to show, given that they hadn't invented movie lights yet!).
And still, it tells us something about the 1890s and Edison that he chose this specific scene to dramatize.
no, she didn't duck, they used a dummy. right before the executioner drops his axe, there's a cut to another take but it seems like a single shot because the action is quite consistent. in between those takes they replaced the actor (yes, actor, not an actress :P) with the dummy.
yeah, it's really amazing. and the audience back then didn't know anything about filmmaking of course, so they thought the actress really gave her life for the film (like some of the people on YouTube, ironically :P )and they totally freaked out when they saw it.
Ah Edison (and his assistants who rarely get the credit they deserve!) may have created the first special effects shot but Melies mastered it in the early days of cinema!
I wonder if, back then some people thought it was actual footage? Interesting story, but while I was watching Birth of a Nation, someone asked me if it was actual video from the civil war.
