VMK was supposed to be only a 1 year thing. It was promotional game, only meant to be used for a certain event in the parks. (Pin trading...) VMK's popularity got really out of hand so they decided to close it since it wasn't used as a promo game anymore. It was a phenomenon. Disney didn't want that in the first place. Hence the closing.
