I see tons of jobs on those freelance bidding sites saying things like "I need a hundred 300-word blog posts by tomorrow about jewelry and women's purses. Will pay $0.50 each." Does anybody actually write for this amount? Or are people who take these jobs just plagiarizing content from elsewhere on the web?
Okay, so I am still in college....2 years into my four year degree. I am majoring in English and am interest in freelance writing as a career option. Should I wait till I am through college to pursue this job? I want clients to take me seriously and recognize my talent. When you say "writing samples" do you mean previous job writing experience ( like work put in the paper or on a web site) because until I get a job I don't have "samples" like that, just general writing i have done on my own.
I have been a freelancer and writer for 15 years and I have never had a website and I have been able to get work.
I don't think having a website automatically equals work unless you are writing out of state and nationally. Since I work largely locally, I like to meet with editors if possible and show them my work.
However, Iam considering putting up my resume and clips at some site since work has slowed to a crawl this year for me, the biggest drought of my career thus far.
@MultiSmartass1 i am a new student in college and have been told by many teachers to pursue writing. (i'm good) in your opinion, do you see this as a good career option to pursue? (btw i'm thinking of writing for a newspaper)
@rickangelsfan27 Well, obviously Iam always in favor of new writers (unlike some writers) so its good that you are entertaining writing for a living.
However, it depends on what kind of wriitng you intend to do.
Apparently, you intend to be a journalist.
Keep in mind that with the closure of a number of dailies across the country and the shift to webbased journalism with some of these papers that newspapers are going through rough times.
@rickangelsfan27 if you love writing, then it is. Listen to yourself - people will always give you pros and cons for going into writing, at the end, you know what you love. If you love it enough, you can create a place for yourself because your passion will attract clients (if you learn how to show your passion in your portfolios etc). Good luck!
You can create your own website at directfreelance The content of the website is already populated for freelance writers and can be easily modified without any knowledge of html.
I found Triond on stumbleupon a while ago and it seems pretty cool. . .just I can never think of what to write to submit cause what you do is write things for people to use on their websites and they pay you for it so it's a little intimidating thinking "is this interesting enough" or "is it too personal"
also I'm not sure if it'll list all your contributions as a portfolio. Anyone else use Triond?
You can get a domain for less than $10/year and hosting doesn't need to cost more than $5 a month. It is a good investment if you are serious about a writing career.
awesome

Don't you need money to get your own website?

To get your own domain yes it will cost money but it is not needed.
There are plently of free hosting sites that you can go to such as Zymic.
If you want to go to a place with templates already set up for you then freewebs it probably better.
