Well if you knew anything about exhausts you would know that first a cold exhaust usually sounds raspy and second that a X-pipe usually makes it sound more exotic which tends to be raspy also. Oh, and don't forget about not having cats and having straight through mufflers. Sorry if I want a to have a completely free flowing system and don't want to spend 1200+ dollars. Let me make it sound deeper and I'll throw some Flowmasters on it and lose a crap load of power.
yeah i can see your point with price. im actually a mechanic that works at a workshop that specailises in LsX motors. we have done numerous test with power figures on the best flowing systems. now we had our testing done with an ls1, we already new that 4-1 headers were best, so we used them as a base. (leading australian brand called pacemaker) We started our test with headers and a twin 3 inch sytem with no mufflers or cat. Just pipe, and used this as a base figure.
Using this as a base power figure, we then moved onto the same setup, just using one of the best flowing high flow cats on the market (magnaflow 3 inch). And hey presto, Made .3 kw less.... so are you gonna really worry about that much power? We then added some of our in-house custom made straight through mufflers in the center of the system and it made 7 kw more than straight through pipe with no cats!
Next for the test was adding rear resonators to the muffler system.... sounded deeper and soo sweet!! (and ive heard alot of different systems on ls1's) and made No Difference to power whats so ever to the muffler only system. (by no difference im talking like .2kw) We also added a X merge (or X pipe) and this added an extra 4 kw, when added to the previous 7 kw gain makes a total of 11kw over the straight through pipe.
Now all these test were ran on the dyno, all on a totally stock motor, no tune, no cold air intake, nothing changed but the exhaust.
The Ls1 motor's react very sensetivly to back pressure changes. They need a good amount of back pressure to make nice, smooth power throughout the rev range, and also to make power!
Also to make sure that the test were fair, each different set up was tested with 5 runs on the dyno each, all run right to the limiter. So they are results of some sirious testing
