If someone truly wants to make a big impact on the world, they should work with disadvantaged children. When I was in college (and even nowadays) people look down on those in helping professions. Its truly sad. They want status, prestige and money or they consider the job to be worthless.
Most people in law school are recent college grads with degrees that doesn't give them any knowledge applicable to the workforce. Their job prospects are bad or they major it with intent to go to law school. If you are going to law school, people need to understand the financial burden and find ways to mitigate it. I'd rather start a business and fail at it than have a huge law school debt. It's all about connections when you land a job.
I had no clue this video would get the hits it did. For all the people who feel this video may have been unduly harsh or critical...I understand. My goal was to be pragmatic/realistic. HOWEVER, with that being said, I would like to create another video looking at why getting a law degree is useful. There's also an excellent article on Google titled "99 Things To Do With Your Law Degree Besides Practicing Law."
Your incorrect. The average lawyer in the state of CT gets $125,000/yr their first year. After about 5 years in the field one can make $750,000+ (in correspondence with the statistics). And for people who love law, it's not stressful one bit! In fact they love it! And getting a job in law is NOT HARD AT ALL... IF you do well in college wether the college be Harvard or State University! :)
This is comical. Back up your claim and define "average". Both law schools in the state of connecticut have mean starting salaries of employed graduates of around 60-70k. That said only around 80% of law graduates are employed within 9 months. Note that in some statistics it will state "median salary in private sector". Many graduates will not find employment in the private sector.
Also note when your statistics were compiled. A 2007 statistic of salary will be much higher than a 2009 statistic simply due to the economic downturn.
Per US News 59.1% of UCon Graduates are known to be employed at graduation. Of those starting employment in the private sector the MEDIAN salary is 105,000. Law school is a rip off. I know several partners in the top 250 law firms that agree with me. Top 15 schools are still a good investment though.
The best advice is: DON'T GO because it is a severely over-glutted field and the majority of new JDs will not find legitimate jobs in the legal profession. If you are seriously considering law school, you owe it to yourself to conduct large amounts of research before you ruin your life with huge amounts of student loan debt. Seek out the law school scambusting blogs such as the ones at Blogspot: JDScam, FlusterCucked, LawSchoolScam and search for the JD Underground discussion forum.
Thank you for making this video. I have always wanting to go to law school but decided that it would be best to become a librarian with a master's degree.
@augusto29556 You made the right call. Nothing against the maker of this video, but law school is an absolute CASH COW at this point and I regret the day I ever went. Until SOME level of sanity is restored to American higher education, I urge people to just not pursue it; the numbers simply don't make sense in the end. Even if you do get a semi-decent paying job, your monthly student loan payments of $1,000, $2,000 or more will absolutely DRAIN your resources and it's a complete scam.
Right off the bat, this guy is not one of the brightest law school students. He he's directing his statement to people who are interested in "either" going to law school or becoming a lawyer - a good thinking lawyer or anybody with common sense would know that you can't become a lawyer without law school and you wouldn't be interested in law school for the hell of it. So there is no "either/or" type. He needs a lesson in communication. I wouldn't hire him.
@jakmere --Are you aware that roughly 1/3 of law school graduates do not end up practicing law? Some end up doing non-profit work, some work for the government, etc. Some make the decision that they don't want to be attorney's before they attend law school. Because there is a good chunk that end up pursuing other fields, our law school invites a good amount of these alumni down. Not everyone who attends law school do so because they want to be an attorney..
@AndrewBruskin Thank you for taking your time to make this very interesting video about law school. Its not just interesting for someone who wants to be a lawyer.
@jakmere Actually you can take the bar exam and practice law in the State of California without a law degree. Not saying he knows that, but maybe before calling someone out based on common sense you should consider research.
Ofcourse money is important issue, but honestly name educational program, which even almost can guarantee salary of "at least" 200 000$ per year. You have to agree, that average salary of law school graduates is very good when compared to other faculties graduates.
Thank you all for your comments, including me being unintentionally hilarious. You know that is what I love doing best :).
@ cmh9878--The second highest reason why law school students attend law school is to make money. The first reason is because they do not get into medical school. Luckily for me, I know what I want to do when I get out and money is not my main priority.
And yes, William & Mary is actually a very nice place to study law. I recommend you pay us a visit. :)
I know 5 lawyers (all in the same family) all but 1 enjoys what they do and is happy with their decision. The 1 that hates his job makes 150k+ and is 27 years old, he never works weekends but he hates it.
I clicked this video thinking this was going to be another humorous/cynical take on law school or being a lawyer. This is not what I expected, although this guy is unintentionally hilarious. He's a law STUDENT giving his opinion on what it's like to be a lawyer, and, given that he knows nothing about being a lawyer, his insights are not too deep. "Most lawyers don't make $2 million a year or fundamentally change the world." You don't say.
If this video doesn't make you want to attend William and Mary then I don't know what will. I'm having trouble reading the US News ranking though...Could someone please clarify the Tier system to me again? Wait, Andrew does this very clearly in Part II...stay tuned
@asauveplane -- Thank you for your reply. Perhaps I was unduly harsh (or appeared that way) towards my law school. With this being said, there are many reasons why William & Mary is a good place to study law. The law school is in a quiet/historic town, plus the students are very friendly and most of the professors are really great. It is also less expensive than other law schools. I say come on down and pay us a visit if you are considering law school.
