does your's kinda hit a wall at 90mph or so and take pretty long to get to full speed? i tried the same with my 96' grand cherokee with the 4.0 i6 and when you get to 90 it takes forever to get to full speed even if you press all the way down lol and btw i have a new transmission
i have a 94 laredo with a cummins manifold and turbo.. i run 65lbs boost and break lose all wheels at every stop sign. im gonna make a video and post it eventually. i swapped both rear ends and put 353's in both. its one bad asss mother jeep.
the only time i had problems was during the winter months, the check engine light would come on. ofcourse the engine was not reaching operating temps fast enough and would stay in the open loop trying to heat it up
As far as the engine being hurt, i didn't notice ANYTHING wrong with my engine, and i drove the ever living crap out of it, long trips (26 hours to Canada) short trips like a mile or so, never noticed anything negative.
never had an oil or coolant leak or anything like that
Nice jeep man. I wanted you to see my video of my jeep. I have it modded out but the elevation of where i live hurts it plus i havent done the 160 degree theromstat cause im afraid to mess with it. everyone says it can hurt things to change it without a tune. I wanted your input after seeing mine.
the engine feels brand new for mine as well mine has 140,000. no mechanical defects, the engine is a beast. nothing can stop the 4.0. my tranny has to be rebuilt soon but other than that the only problems i have had is the electronics such as the window regulator.
its not likely, the gearing is setup for fuel efficiency, and without modifications to the engine it makes it very difficult to get it up to these speeds quick enough... (unless you've got a super long straight away...) theres just not enough HP and Torque to get you there in a quick manner.
@MrPizzaman09 Just to clear things up, if you have a jeep, its an inline 6, not a V6. Two completly different engines. I wouldnt even associate the inline six with a junk V6 engine. And I have a 96 4.0. They are oka t taking off, but once you hit 5- mph it accelerates soooooo sloooow LOL
definitely, the filter is actually next to the radiator , about 1 inch away from the grill... and it is mostly getting the air from there, avoiding the air from around the radiator and around the engine...
performance wise my setup is amazing compared to stock, and can keep up with the 4.7L V8 with all of my mods.
This is very cool. My friend has a 4.7 in his Jeep. I have a 98 Cherokee with the classic 4.0 and its real torquey. The engines in great shape though so I'm going to see if I can build it up like yours. Which mod would you say gave you the most significant gains in power? Whichever one it is, I'm doing it first!
the most noticeable mod was the 160 degree thermostat... you can really notice it when the air is cool, if you sit in traffic way too long it warms up and drives like its stock, but when its cool theres loads of extra power, for $10 for the t-stat and a bit of coolant its the most economical. after that id say deleting the rear cat and installing the exhaust, but it helps to have a cold air intake first, then the 63mm throttle body just makes the most out of that.
When you changed that t-stat did you also reprogram your PCM to make use of the colder T-stat.. If not your not getting any power increase.. Just wasting fuel.... Your engine is in open loop, it thinks it still trying to warm up and keeps dumping more fuel in.. Sounds good thou
That's something you would have to have it sent away to a performance shop or somebody that has the programs to be able to change the tune in the PCM.. I don't know if they still sell them or have them but something like a superchips chip would attach to the PCM and change the programming.. Some are programmed to make use of a cooler T-stat.. You don't have to worry about overheating but IMO your just wasting fuel without the proper PCM tune to go with the T-Stat
@drippinblood28 I put a hypertech max energy chip on my WJ jeep and the chip didnt offer half the features it advertised. the best thing to do with the computer is to reflash it. B&G Performance can do it. Its the best thing to do with the new OBD2 computers that bully all mods done trying to keep the engine running stock.
I've got another video i need to upload to youtube, it just shows how super torquey my 4.0L is with all the mods... it jumps to 2500rpm's super quick when i rev and just sounds SICK. and did a 4k rev too which is fun...
Nice vid! I have a 180*F thermostat in my Jeep. The reason the temp goes up is because the E-fan is programed to turn on at 195*F. I have a mechanical fan in my Jeep (mechanical with E-fan) and the temp always stays at 180*F.
Hey man, sorry it took so long to reply, i didn't see this in my inbox... but Jeeps are kinda limited on their programmers, you pretty much have to buy a hypertech programmer ($300-350) picks up abit of horsepower stock, abit more with mods
it also has to do with the road you are on. I haven't topped mine out but i had a sentra and it topped at 120 on a downhill run and 115 on an uphill. i think it has to do with rpm in certain gears i dunno
thanks, i just put an intake on and i can hear and feel a difference, its not actually an intake i just took out the factory air box and put a spectare filter on the tube and cut a piece of 3" pvc to clamp the filter on the stock duct. it works tho
Well yes and no, If you keep the air flowing thru your radiator and keep it below 195, Yes Definetly, a few horsepower (maybe 5-10) for sure,
the down side is its all temperature based, so if you sit at a light or a drive thru for a while and it goes back up to 195 degrees, its just like it was a stock t-stat, and there is noticeable lag in acceleration... and you'll know you were sitting for too long the instant you hit the throttle, for a $10 mod + coolant, definetly worth every penny
Oh id be down for a little race, just too bad your in Texas (well your plate is TX)
I need a Tune in a big way. the check engine light comes on when its cold outside, troublecode is "engine is too cold for too long" forces open loop on t-stat setting gives oodles of hp. well ya know, a few more
although im looking to lift it now, and put on some muddys, she still snaps at civics and celicas
Yea it's stuck at 115mph now (my gps maxed me out at 116 downhill.)
next few weeks, tranny fluid/filter change, synthetic gear lube in the front dif, a tune, and possibly wrap the exhaust header (since i'll probably end up replacing it with a banks, i can see what i can pick up power wise with the wrap)
It is hard to see but i think he got up to 115. I know my cherokee XJ wont go over 114 mph according to GPS which was kind of scary since i am driving in a big box.

Did you have problems with the check engine light on your thermostat swap...ive read it shouldnt be messed with or your engine will be hurt?
