7000 feet for a 737 is more than adequate. HOWEVER: factor in the mountains and nasty approach? And slope? And floating down half the runway? To say it was risky is VERY appropriate.
I don't think this landing was dangerous at all. It takes skill and good judgement to pull one like this. Have had to fly my B737 almost the same way in short strips around Africa.
@tinolino58 No its not standard at all. This airport has very short runway, must have had hard braking to make it stop with that small amount of runway left.
@tinolino58 Well at least before extension one A320 over ran the runway and crashed, but probably why its listed as one of the most dangerous ones is more because of its approach than runway lenght. Anyway you can minus about half from that 7000 ft as plane did not touch down before about halfway, and thats not very much left then.
@tinolino58 My first 5 hours were done in a C150A (1961 or 62) which was also powered by the O-200 (as all C150s are) :)
Sorry about the "flight sim" comment, didn´t mean to be rude! But if you fly since 1978 you should know that 7000 is not that much for a 737, especially if half the runway is left behind.
@bruno84 Thanks :-) OH, I loved the C150, I loved those first few years flying on a low budget. It was a great pleasure to control the plane with the 2 doors on the approach. No pedals and no yoke input. Just playing with the half open doors and the trim..

Gotta love the videographer's excited comment. He's so right. Outcome would surely have been different had the pilot not stopped in time. Wow... indeed!
Captain: Ladies and gentle this is your captain speaking, thank you for flying with us and please ignore the smell of shit coming from the cockpit . Both the co-pilot and myself dropped a massive duce. Have a great day & like us on facebook.
I'm glad I get my information from a real pilot. A lot of people who post comments and seem as if they know about aviation, (do not) and provide non-truths and misinformation. Those of us (like myself) who are not pilots but are interested in aviation, just want correct information.....
@robinbrannon1 - look at the :38 second mark. These large white blocks on either side of the airplane right at that moment is where they should have touched down. They were no where near that point! This should have been a go around! Glad it turned out ok!
Shud have cleaned up and gone around when his flare went way too long. Approach was fine - crazy typical for that airport. I bet the brakes were hot, the crew's eyes were as big as saucers and it was underwear laundry time later that day!
This guy barely made it....there seems to be some wind keeping the plane afloat....but I think the guy should have gone around once he failed to touch at the start...great vid...wow.

@CAPlaneSpotting It's an unfortunate reality of the aviation industry. @pilotjake88 So not filling out paperwork is worth the risk of possibly a hundred passengers lives? If you think that's right, your an idiot. And by the way, I highly doubt your a pilot, your probably a kid that plays FSX all day and wishes he was a pilot.
@sirlego1 No I actually own my own business and film aviation as a hobby and have many friends that are pilots and each one that watched this video agreed with me. Thank you, have a nice day! Bye Bye.

@robinbrannon1 - We NEVER get penalized for go arounds (we don't call them TOGA's). This should have been a go around. They floated way too far down the runway and left themselves little runway to properly stop the aircraft. BUT I don't know how long the runway is and it may have only looked like that from this perspective. It sure looks short though.
@wncaptain1 - If we are out of crosswind limits, below minimums or if the braking action as reported by another aircraft or airport vehicle is reported as NIL, then we don't even start the approach. And we NEVER EVER get penalized for go arounds!!
Craziest landing I've ever seen on youtube !!!! Critical. I hope there was a good reason to not go around... Seems like it touched down after the middle of the runway...

Your comment has received 83 "thumbs up" ratings. Why is it buried down here and not at the top? What's up, youtube? Sheesh
i thought the plane will overshoot the runway because it seems to be so fast even if it is already too near at the end of the runway .. pilots are very good that that can handle these kind of landings ..
i am amazed that the plane is very late in touchdown but still the pilot didn't missed approach and very fast in turning out to exit the runway .. . very nice ..
the captain shouldn't do that he risk the life of several passengers doing that late landing.... i cant agree with nobody who says thats a good landing
Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to Honduras... wait.. are we landing? yes, no, yes, no... yes..no? Ladies and gentlemen, we are performing a go-around procedure, we will be on the gr- *OUCH*
Oops...now how close was he to taking the trees with him at 0:20? Skillful as the pilot was, I think things could easily have gone pear-shaped with the landing.
All I wanna say is I have just made that Toncontin approach in FSX (in VATSIM) and OH MY!... was that scary! it was a thrill.. I actually coundnt believe I made it safely... definitely the most fun I've had to the time in FSX.... with high terrain at all quadrants... and that steep descent at the end in order to hit the beggining of the runway (otherwise you're most likely done) and with all those buildings surrounding the airport... you wont believe how dangerous and short the runway is, try it
I don´t like to criticize because we can all do mistakes but that was not a mistake, that was pure recklessness!!! A visit to the chief pilot´s office was in order.

I'd have to say for such a long landing he salvaged it pretty well by using the excessive momentum to taxi himself through the overrun, all the way around to the other side.
I LOOKED THIS UP ON GOOGLE EARTH AND MEASURED FROM WHERE HE TOUCHED DOWN (which is approximately the 3rd last taxi way exit) AND HE HAD ABOUT 700-800 METERS TO STOP
The Captain just didn't want to go around because he had a big ego that he didn't want to get bruised! But before anyone turns on me and says what would i know.... Try flying in Papua New Guinea for a decade then say something.
That pilot was very smart to create as much drag as possible before actually touching the ground, the biggest risk was making that turn. I wouldn't thank the brake company but whoever created the piston and vanes on the nose gear on that air craft.
@jakal1591 Aircrafts don't use brake pads, they have a brake assembly on each landing gear that uses stators and rotors instead of actual pads.. And I think the nose gear doesn't have brakes itself, but has some sort of shimmy dampener so it won't castor while going at high speeds, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
Anyways, I bet those brakes were hot as hell after landing.
@brettv8: That runway drops 70ft over approximately 5400ft between the keyboards. He touched down roughly halfway - at the 3d taxiway after the keyboard - leaving roughly 2400ft to stop. Only a light 737 can do a butt-puckering panic stop in that distance. A heavy plane wouldn't have succeeded.
Idiot pilot, he s trying to probe that her is an hero, a super pilot or super fool ?...not smart at all, he could crash and kill more then 100 innocent people a board...idiot pilot
geeez.. Way over the touchpoint. They should have went around.

Well done!!! Hell no! He got lucky!
The Captain just didn't want to go around because he had a big ego that he didn't want to get bruised! But before anyone turns on me and says what would i know.... Try flying in Papua New Guinea for a decade then say something.

impressive, but it would be safer to go around...

well done sir that was spectacular

That pilot was very smart to create as much drag as possible before actually touching the ground, the biggest risk was making that turn. I wouldn't thank the brake company but whoever created the piston and vanes on the nose gear on that air craft.
JoyFulDoom 5 months ago in playlist Aircraft IV
@JoyFulDoom the captain had to buy brake pads for the airlines later
jakal1591 5 months ago
@jakal1591 Aircrafts don't use brake pads, they have a brake assembly on each landing gear that uses stators and rotors instead of actual pads.. And I think the nose gear doesn't have brakes itself, but has some sort of shimmy dampener so it won't castor while going at high speeds, but I'm not 100% sure on that.
Anyways, I bet those brakes were hot as hell after landing.

@airbornerat I think he was a pro pilot as he dared to actually touch down even after he knew he is taking a BIG risk!

Maybe a deceptive horizon, may have been within regulations? ie: not perfectly level runway?
brettv8 6 months ago
@brettv8: That runway drops 70ft over approximately 5400ft between the keyboards. He touched down roughly halfway - at the 3d taxiway after the keyboard - leaving roughly 2400ft to stop. Only a light 737 can do a butt-puckering panic stop in that distance. A heavy plane wouldn't have succeeded.
That was *close.*

Was that a paved exit when he departed the runway, or was he in grass?
