I wish people would stop comparing him and nick jonas. They are two totally different people with different levels of experience. Judge them on how they sing the song not on how they compare to people who have come before or after them. They both did incredible. Just leave it at that.
@whatsmynameagain03 I agree with you totally. Pop culture and music are slowly destroying people's perception towards a 'great' performance. Whilst Jonas is talented, he's a pop icon. His reputation skews how his talent is judged.
What are you even taking about, there's nothing to compare, this version is far way more good than nick jonas's version! just listen the part 1:09 and listen it again on the other version, all I can say is... hell no I'm not gonna say anything this version speaks for itself...
I'm 13 and I can't stand Nick Jonas! Micheal is way better, this song is so sad, I love this song, but Nick Jonas ruined it. He sounded too pop. I thought that he may be good because he was Gavroche when he was younger, but I was wrong.
I think both of them are good. I mean, Micheal is CLEARLY the better of the two, no comparison. But Micheal is also a truly remarkable singer and I don't think anyone could have been better then him. Nick did a good job, just not up to the standard that Les Miserables is held up to. And just because someone grew up with The Jonas Brothers, it doesn't mean that they liked them or have no taste in art.
No offence to the people who perfer the nick jonas verison. I actually saw that version first then I saw this one... To me there is no comparision between the two...
I consider myself a good singer, and I could probably sing at a similar level as Jonas with this song. (In terms of range, feeling, emotion while singing...) Ball however, I'm not even going to try... Its way over my head...
Oh and please don't take this as an attempt to brag, that's just how I judge singers...
This performance really is outstanding. Still, everyone is entitled to their opinion and Nick Jonas put his own, admittedly more 'pop', stamp on it. I've had the pleasure of meeting the bloke (he was watching Les Mis in London the same day as me) and he's lovely and so passionate about the show. The world would be boring if everyone did everything the same and personally I enjoy watching different portrayals.
Michael Ball is the only Marius. Nick Jonas wasn't terrible in his portrayal of Marius, considering the fact that he pretty much sung pop all of his life and as any musician can tell you, broadway (or what I call "proper") singing is much different than pop. But I feel like Nick was just too young to really play Marius well. His voice wasn't strong enough, and it still sounded pop-ish. He didn't put much emotion into his voice, meanwhile you can hear Marius' emotions coming from Michael Ball.
I don't really see the need to compare Micheal and Jonas. It's very true that they both did their own versions of the songs, their own interpretations, and they do both certainly have different styles. It's okay to express your opinion, but to say Nick disgraced it is going a little too far, when in reality, art has no definition- it's free expression. I personally like Micheal much more, and Jonas does do a good job of singing his part. We all have our own preferences, no need to bash him.
Let's not compare Michael and Nick. They aren't the same, obviously. I like them both, but in different ways. We're all Mizzies here, let's not fight amongst ourselves, shall we? Thank you:)
This is the Dream Cast performing! Michael has MUCH more technique and passion than any I've heard sing this amazing song. Yes it is my opinion but it is also a fact that he sings much better than Nick in this style. Maybe Nick sings better in pop but the truth is, this guy has had much more experience and time perfecting his performance and voice. Just listen to both versions... It's pretty obvious. Way to go Michael Ball!!!
@meghan5171 I agree. This has to be up there with the best performance ever. He certainly is the best Marius ever like Colm Wilkinson is the best Valjean and Philip Quast the best Javert. Nick Jonas was just awful and if his poor performance was a crime I would make sure he was arrested by Javert.
I'm not for or against Nick Jonas as a performer per se- but I do prefer his Marius. Marius is an kid. So is NJ. So it's easier to see it in him. Mr. Ball has an awesome voice but he comes off a little too Broadway happy. I can't see angst. He seems almost smiling at points. Just my opinion.
michael ball is awesome, no one comes close, this version of les mis will go down as the best ever performed. between him and lea salonga on the same stage, you will neve find any better...
A lot better than Nick is an understatment, regardless of what age you are, you must hear the difference, this is perfection, anyone else compared to this come in very poor second I am afraid. Very difficult shoes to fill for any other performer!!
Although people say it's not good, or hate it, or is better Michel, you has to bear in mind that it is the first time that Nick does this, and obviously, for me, he did very well .. to be his first time, do not judge him, because not everyone has a voice like this. Nick is very talented. Support Nick.♥
@Whatsmynameagain03 okay it.s YOUR opinion . I on the other hand, was talking about the acting. Which is not that great. Singing well and acting are different things andd they both bring some sort of believability.
@widdlepuddyfat Because people in a younger generation who grew up with imbeciles like Nick Jonas being praised as artists are much more likely to "appreciate" that kind of "performance" than people who have been exposed to what true art is; what people like Lea and Michael have done here is beyond words.
@Whatsmynameagain03 Oh, stop the elitism already. It's just ridiculous. So what if they like other kinds of music? Just enjoy what you enjoy and shut the fuck up about it, you're not better than anyone else just because you like a different kind of music than them.
@NekoNickKun It's not elitism. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and if you're going to express one complimenting a performer who has poor technique and whose only real reason for being cast is his reputation because of a fucking tv channel, then don't expect me to hold my own opinion back. Kindly take your own advice :)
@Whatsmynameagain03 Of course you're entitled to your own opinion. I couldn't agree more. But when your opinion makes you come off as incredibly elitist (your 'true art' comment), don't expect people to hold back their opinions of you either.
@NekoNickKun When did I ever say I expected people to hold back their opinions? They mean nothing unless I respect the people in the first place, anyway, and anyone who thinks Nick Jonas sang this better than Michael Ball is never going to be someone I respect. On the other hand, there is a different between elitism and fact. Nick Jonas can't hold his own in this role. That's a fact. A tween pop star shouldn't be cast as a lead in a huge show like this. Fact. Sorry.
@Whatsmynameagain03 Nick Jonas wasn't even that bad, and this is coming from someone that fucking hates the Jonas brothers. He was fine in the role. Not incredible, but definitely not terrible.
No, that would be your opinion in your own perspective weakly disguised as fact. I think that Nick Jonas did a great job in his role, you just need to learn to accept that other people can do a part that was not even designed for any one person in particular. Each one has their good points, and you need to tolerate other people playing parts because people age, but the play lives on.
@commandercody5724 There's no disguise there, and I always love when people imply that I'm attempting to be subtle through my choice of words. I say exactly what I mean to. The play lives on, yes, and people age, yes. But that doesn't refute the FACT that the standard for what we call a "good" performance is declining. What, do we need to see Kesha or Miley Cyrus on Broadway before my point is made?
I think they both have talent but I agree with you that Michael Ball is better by far... especially as an actor, I just think they were trying to get apublic to come on teh 25th anniversary so they got a tween start to come along, I still think that his interpretation was prett good however, and with time I think he'll become better... it was simply interesting to see a new interepretatio of the character, michael Ball's is interesting but we needed something a little different for once
@Whatsmynameagain03 although I think that someone with at least more acting talent would have been a better choice than nic, he just needed a little more training... and in no way would I agree to say that NIck Jonas is an artist, he just happens to perform well in musicals :p
@Whatsmynameagain03 Plenty of people in my generation (roughly age 16) are exposed to artists like Jonas, but that doesn't mean we know talent any less than you do. I loved Michael Ball! I also thought Jonas did a fine job, as well! I appreciate any interpretation actors bring to the role. Jonas didn't disgrace it, or "Les Miserables," or art in general. What disgraces art is what you've basically said here, that there is a "greater and lesser art." Art is what it is, so leave it be.
@TheAxelMan100 Plenty of people "in your generation" call rap art as well. So thanks, but I'll stick with what I said originally. Just because the standards for what is "good" are dramatically lower for "your generation" doesn't mean I need to adhere to them, much less respect them.
@Whatsmynameagain03 Rap is a genre of music. Music is art. Therefore, rap is art. You just simply don't like it. I don't either, but I know it's art. There are no "standards." That's just ridiculous. There is what you appreciate, and what other people appreciate. You don't have to like rap and stuff like that, but don't put anyone down because they like it, that's low. We're not a different race of humans, we're a younger generation. I don't know why it should be necessary to argue about this.
One of the best songs sung by a guy ever! I love Les Miserables and don't think that we should ignore that in our comments by pointlessly arguing over whether Michael or Nick was better. We each have our own opinions and should agree to disagree, no? Good. Now we can agree to love this amazing song from a superb show!
@DrinkOmally you have to comprimise with both sides lol. But I was tired of everyone picking on nick. Come on you would take this roll even if you knew you weren't as good. It's the chance of a life time.
I don't think people should compare Michael Ball and Nick Jonas. Every actor/singing will do stuff in their own way, that's what makes them unique. Michael and Nick are both great singers and actors as well. However, they do their things in a different way.
@appleisonfire You are absolutely right and I agree. I always appreciate the different styles of different singers. Uusally when someone says that one singer is better than the other, they really mean that they prefer one singer over the other.
@appleisonfire Answers are given in response to questions. I commented. But beyond that - it's only stupid if you're ignorant and have no idea what this anniversary edition was all about. And clearly you are, so I'm not really worried :) Point being - Nick Jonas sucks and needs to stick to his teen "heartthrob" (gag me) pop band. Michael Ball is 1,000 times the performer he will ever be, in every way. The end!
@appleisonfire For the 10th anniversary, ALL of the actors that had played roles in the production since it's introduction in London VOTED on who did the best job in each role - these are the performers who received the most votes. Michael Ball was voted as the best Marius by his fellow cast members and the cast members of 8 other years of productions. So as much as I know you would love to live in a world where there is no objectivity in bias, I'm afraid it doesn't exist.
@appleisonfire Because you see, at some point, when enough people prefer one thing to another, there IS an objective "betterment" attached the said thing. And anyone who has a clue about music and musical theatre will prefer a real artist (the one you hear singing here) over a washed up Disney star.
@appleisonfire I strongly dislike anybody who tries to be something they are definitely not. Just because you have some vocal ability does not mean you have any place in a production like this. I don't "hate" Nick Jonas, I resent the fact that he was allowed to play a role he could never do justice.
The great talent of this man is that you can hear the controlled power in his voice when he is singing softly and the utterly amazing sound when that power is unleashed....wonderful! Why can't I find more of Michaels great recordings on youtube. I have plenty of cd's but no idea how to upload them with videos and all that. Marvelous expression in his voice, far more so than the latest artists who sing in the same style currently in vogue.
But another post said it. Close your eyes shut out the visuals for both performances. Just listen to them, and you will see the difference in the two. They both did a great job at this powerful song, but you can hear the emotions and despair in Michael's that you can't in Nick's. It's that simple.
I am the last person to put another performer down. It's a hard thing to do, honestly. But people keep constantly comparing Nick and Michael in this song. I realize Jonas fans are going to do that, and I gave it a fair listen and liked what he did. I simply prefer Michael, and always will. I heard a vast difference in the two, though I did like what Nick did with it. It's our opinion, can we get back to enjoying this performance, now instead of picking it a part for possible errors?
Listen and look at Michael Ball performing this... The emotion and vocal talent mixing in perfect harmony... Getting chills all over... then go listen to Nick Jonas performing empty chairs in the 25th anniversary.... No emotion and a weak voice... not difficult choosing who's the best Marius :)
@outsiderpinglevinen You're right and wrong, Michael Ball does this brilliantly i agree, but Nick Jonas does this very well too and doesn't have a weak voice otherwise he would never have been picked for the part, also Nick does show a lot of emotion just not as much as Michael Ball.
@LGKxBEaTzxFTW So you think having the same expression on your face throughout the entire show is showing emotion? He has the same expression on his face when he's supposed to be deeply in love with Cosette as he has when he is mourning the loss of his friends. I know that facial expression is the only way to show emotion, this is also do-able through song, but like his face his singing has the same feel in it with everything he sings.
@outsiderpinglevinen Agreed. Michael Ball absolutely perfects this song. I can't imagine what they were thinking when they cast Nick Jonas as Marius. It makes me wish I was born fifteen years ago so that I could go see his performance.
So true, and absolutely no voice. No comparison can be made. Nick Jones has put me off watching my anniversary Les Mis DVD because hsi voice is so rotten. Alfie Boe, now that's a voice and a fitting replacement for ColmWilkinson as Val Jean. You obviously know your music -
first of all nick started out doing broadway as a very little kid. you can not compare michael and nick they brought different things to the character i personally like Michael better but nick's voice still hasn't fully developed. your voice doesn't FULLY developed until your mid 20's
In my opinion, for an "ultimately long-waited for" 25-year Anniversary Concert, Nick Jonas is absolutely a "no-no" for a Marius role there were many understudies even as powerful as Ball or might have even better~~~~
If Nick wants to be successful in shows like this he needs to get more power in his voice... Sorry nickypoo but you don't get power from singing pop songs...
There are Nick Jonas' vids, go there and comment on him all you like. Michael blows him out of the water vocally and it is ridiculous to even talk about them in the same sentence.
Actually I think the most importance difference between the two is that Michael shows all the emotion in his voice, all of the acting simply supplements that. On the other hand, Nick does a great job using appropriate acting, yet it doesn't reflect in his voice. I could listen to Michael all day and I can fell and picture the emotions his character is feeling, yet simply listening to Nick doesn't paint the right picture.
So fucking sick of seeing 'Nick Jonas, Nick Jonas' everywhere. I am here to listen to Michael. Go listen to your Jonas Brothers and leave this video alone.
Nick and Michael have different tones, but they both did an awesome job with the singing. Michael had more emotion in the beginning than Nick did. It was like Michael was telling a story in the beginning moreso than Nick was. Thumbs up to both of them though:))))
We all have our opinions, and I thought Nick was good. But more emotional? How does one get more emotional than this performance? You can see and hear the agony, and grief in Michael's voice here. The way he throws his arms down when he sings "My friends, my friends don't ask me, what you're sacrifice is for?" Nick was weak at both ends of the range in this song, where Michael's gets more powerful. My opinion but one that has been developed for more than 20 years of this play.
Strange... but.. really I think that Nick's version is just better. I love Nick, jeah I'm his fan, but I can say that even my mother said that he was more.. emotional. Look at Nick... he has tears in eyes. His singing is so powerful, wonderful. He is amazing.
I didn't say that Ball is not a great singer, or something, ok?
People have mentioned that Michael sang this better, but didn't act it out. This was a concert, celebrating Les Mis's 10th Anniversary. The actors were not supposed to act, just sing their parts. But as with Colm Wilkinson, Philp Quast, Ruthie Henshall, and Michael Ball you can hear the purity of their character's emtions in their very words! That is what made them fan favorites! I've always loved this play, but these are my favorite actors that have played it to.
@KaylaAmberCaitlin150 i will let you say that you like nick jonas' performance better, but you cannot say that it is better as if you saying it makes it factual. You can like nicks better but dont say it is flat out better than michael ball's because that is strictly false. thanks.
I thought Nick Jonas did a beautiful job with this song. But, this is how I've always heard it. The 10th Anniversary Concert is a collection of the most fan beloved actors/actresses that have played the parts. Colm (Jean ValJean), Ruthie Henshall (Fantine), Philip Quast (Javert), and Michael Ball for this one. But, I thought young Nick did an honor to it. Michael's voice is matured, with a timber Nick's doesn't have yet, but it's not fair to compare them. Both are gorgeous!
Nick Jonas sings this way better. Just saying. :) Micheal's breaths are way to short, and it's all very rushed. I'm sorry. To much jumping around with the prior notes.
I showed this to my friend and told him I cried to it. He said it was stupid compared to Justin Beiber. I never had wanted to hit somebody in the face that much until then..
It's hard to judge acting when both actors are forced to stand stationary in front of a mic and 3/4 of the shots don't show their faces. My main complaint about Jonas's version is how clipped his words sound. He may be doing it for effect but it ends up sounding like he's running out of breath. :( That said, his age is certainly more believable than Ball's.
if u honestly believe that nick jonas' performance is in any way superior to Michael Ball's whether it be the singing or the acting, your are suffering sever dillusions and should probably seek out professional help. Their singing is not comparable so i dont feel its necessary to explain that any further and those who say nicks acting is better are first off, wrong. Nick looks stiff and awkward (just bad) and 2nd you are just searching for somthing to credit him with there is really no cred ernd
@Nessiechan Nick did a much better acting job than Michael, but I'm not saying that Michael sings bad! Not at all! He's very good singer. His acting is just lame.
I have this on my iPod, makes me cry. Every. Single. Time. <3 love it <3 just watched the 1998 film production :) cried at that too.. oh dear :P still love Les Mis. will Always love Les Mis., and want to see it in london again :) <3 amazing song xx
@youwantthisfire nick definitely doesnt sing higher than thism and its not out of his range, because this song is too high for him. nick jonas is okay, but no one will ever be better than michael ball at marius
If we consider Nick's age may be or perhaps, but being as a professional, such excuses are not allowed. That's the harsh truth about reality. It does not change the fact that his Marius lacked.
it's not that nick cant sing, michael has a belivability and a sorrow that nick simply doesnt have and he may gain it in later years but right now it sounds like a happy guy singing about all his friends dying and how regretful he is that he still hasnt changed what they dyed for, and it is, so in my opinion michael sings with a more open and belivable sorrow than nick does
@memoirsofadramafreak believability? He has diabetes and helps run a campaign for diabetes awareness? Not my favorite guy, but don't forget, he knows his shit.
maybe I'm a new age fool but i don't like Michael's acting...i felt like nick did a descent job considering he is a "pop" artist, he was believable. However i will say Michael is a waaaayy better singer.
@widdlepuddyfat what i meant was this is a video of michael ball singing les mis and the most liked comment was someone saying how much better nich jonas was
@DrinkOmally You asked "why is this comment one of the top rated?" and it stated "Michael Ball is way better at singing but I thought Nick was a better actor" and I have to agree. Michael Ball blew us away but he was smiling smugly at how good he was while he was doing it, which doesn't fit the role.
You however completely misread the comment and thought it was about how Nick supposedly was a much better Marius, which is silly of course.
@xmentosx you're obviously a nick jonas fan and it's noble of you to stand up for your icon, maybe you feel a little scorned or something i don't know but what your are saying is not what i meant i was simply jokingly asking why a comment praising nick jonas was the most liked on a michael ball version of this especially after all the crap they give nick on his version and also i have nothing against nick jonas and i am one of the few les mis fans who had no problem with him playing marius
@DrinkOmally "You're obviously a nick jonas fan" don't assume, because right now you made an ass out of you and me. Ass-u-me. Once again I state the original comment was not about Nick Jonas being oh so awesome and dreamy. It said Nickyboy was worse than Michael Ball and that this version of the song was far superior. The only thing Nick did better was the acting.
I'm not sticking up for anybody. I'm just telling you that you misread the comment as some sort of Jonas-love-fest.
@xmentosx oh my god that assume joke was hilarious, i don't think i've ever heard it before, well done, good job, go you. anyway you are clearly getting far to worked up over something that was intended to be a light hearted joke like i said i had no problem with nick jonas playing marius and i don't think he deserves all the crap, now if you want to continue annoying me with this stupid argument go ahead i will always gladly return the favour with a reply.
@luybae This is the 10th anniversary - it was more about the all-star cast and singing voices than acting. With that said, I still think Michael's performance is more believable than Nick Jonas by FAR.
usually i tend to prefer the version i see or hear first, but only this is the exception

Jonas does not have the vocal range to do this song justice, so for that reason, the song is not as effective as it should be.

michaelgwii 3 weeks ago
I'm not for or against Nick Jonas as a performer per se- but I do prefer his Marius. Marius is an kid. So is NJ. So it's easier to see it in him. Mr. Ball has an awesome voice but he comes off a little too Broadway happy. I can't see angst. He seems almost smiling at points. Just my opinion.

@t2delan1 Well, this isn't the play. It's a concert, so he's not supposed to be acting the part completely.

Nick is very talented. Support Nick.♥

JonasBros4everLove 4 weeks ago
@Whatsmynameagain03 okay it.s YOUR opinion . I on the other hand, was talking about the acting. Which is not that great. Singing well and acting are different things andd they both bring some sort of believability.
luybae 1 month ago
@luybae How old are you? I'm guessing that will explain everything.
Whatsmynameagain03 4 weeks ago
@Whatsmynameagain03 Why does age matter?
widdlepuddyfat 4 weeks ago
@widdlepuddyfat Because people in a younger generation who grew up with imbeciles like Nick Jonas being praised as artists are much more likely to "appreciate" that kind of "performance" than people who have been exposed to what true art is; what people like Lea and Michael have done here is beyond words.
Whatsmynameagain03 4 weeks ago 18
@Whatsmynameagain03 Oh, stop the elitism already. It's just ridiculous. So what if they like other kinds of music? Just enjoy what you enjoy and shut the fuck up about it, you're not better than anyone else just because you like a different kind of music than them.
NekoNickKun 1 week ago 3
@NekoNickKun It's not elitism. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and if you're going to express one complimenting a performer who has poor technique and whose only real reason for being cast is his reputation because of a fucking tv channel, then don't expect me to hold my own opinion back. Kindly take your own advice :)
Whatsmynameagain03 1 week ago
@Whatsmynameagain03 Of course you're entitled to your own opinion. I couldn't agree more. But when your opinion makes you come off as incredibly elitist (your 'true art' comment), don't expect people to hold back their opinions of you either.
NekoNickKun 1 week ago
@NekoNickKun When did I ever say I expected people to hold back their opinions? They mean nothing unless I respect the people in the first place, anyway, and anyone who thinks Nick Jonas sang this better than Michael Ball is never going to be someone I respect. On the other hand, there is a different between elitism and fact. Nick Jonas can't hold his own in this role. That's a fact. A tween pop star shouldn't be cast as a lead in a huge show like this. Fact. Sorry.
Whatsmynameagain03 1 week ago
@Whatsmynameagain03 Nick Jonas wasn't even that bad, and this is coming from someone that fucking hates the Jonas brothers. He was fine in the role. Not incredible, but definitely not terrible.
NekoNickKun 1 week ago
@Whatsmynameagain03
No, that would be your opinion in your own perspective weakly disguised as fact. I think that Nick Jonas did a great job in his role, you just need to learn to accept that other people can do a part that was not even designed for any one person in particular. Each one has their good points, and you need to tolerate other people playing parts because people age, but the play lives on.
commandercody5724 1 week ago
@commandercody5724 There's no disguise there, and I always love when people imply that I'm attempting to be subtle through my choice of words. I say exactly what I mean to. The play lives on, yes, and people age, yes. But that doesn't refute the FACT that the standard for what we call a "good" performance is declining. What, do we need to see Kesha or Miley Cyrus on Broadway before my point is made?
Whatsmynameagain03 1 week ago
I think they both have talent but I agree with you that Michael Ball is better by far... especially as an actor, I just think they were trying to get apublic to come on teh 25th anniversary so they got a tween start to come along, I still think that his interpretation was prett good however, and with time I think he'll become better... it was simply interesting to see a new interepretatio of the character, michael Ball's is interesting but we needed something a little different for once
flippadeal 1 week ago
@Whatsmynameagain03 although I think that someone with at least more acting talent would have been a better choice than nic, he just needed a little more training... and in no way would I agree to say that NIck Jonas is an artist, he just happens to perform well in musicals :p
flippadeal 1 week ago
@Whatsmynameagain03 Plenty of people in my generation (roughly age 16) are exposed to artists like Jonas, but that doesn't mean we know talent any less than you do. I loved Michael Ball! I also thought Jonas did a fine job, as well! I appreciate any interpretation actors bring to the role. Jonas didn't disgrace it, or "Les Miserables," or art in general. What disgraces art is what you've basically said here, that there is a "greater and lesser art." Art is what it is, so leave it be.
TheAxelMan100 1 week ago 11
@TheAxelMan100 Plenty of people "in your generation" call rap art as well. So thanks, but I'll stick with what I said originally. Just because the standards for what is "good" are dramatically lower for "your generation" doesn't mean I need to adhere to them, much less respect them.
Whatsmynameagain03 1 week ago
@Whatsmynameagain03 Rap is a genre of music. Music is art. Therefore, rap is art. You just simply don't like it. I don't either, but I know it's art. There are no "standards." That's just ridiculous. There is what you appreciate, and what other people appreciate. You don't have to like rap and stuff like that, but don't put anyone down because they like it, that's low. We're not a different race of humans, we're a younger generation. I don't know why it should be necessary to argue about this.
TheAxelMan100 1 week ago 2
One of the best songs sung by a guy ever! I love Les Miserables and don't think that we should ignore that in our comments by pointlessly arguing over whether Michael or Nick was better. We each have our own opinions and should agree to disagree, no? Good. Now we can agree to love this amazing song from a superb show!

I don't think people should compare Michael Ball and Nick Jonas. Every actor/singing will do stuff in their own way, that's what makes them unique. Michael and Nick are both great singers and actors as well. However, they do their things in a different way.
appleisonfire 1 month ago
@appleisonfire You are absolutely right and I agree. I always appreciate the different styles of different singers. Uusally when someone says that one singer is better than the other, they really mean that they prefer one singer over the other.

@Talube101 Yes, exactly! There prefer one singer over the other! :)
appleisonfire 1 month ago
@appleisonfire No.
Whatsmynameagain03 1 month ago
@Whatsmynameagain03 Sorry, but that is THE MOST stupid answer someone could ever give, you know.
appleisonfire 1 month ago
@appleisonfire Answers are given in response to questions. I commented. But beyond that - it's only stupid if you're ignorant and have no idea what this anniversary edition was all about. And clearly you are, so I'm not really worried :) Point being - Nick Jonas sucks and needs to stick to his teen "heartthrob" (gag me) pop band. Michael Ball is 1,000 times the performer he will ever be, in every way. The end!
Whatsmynameagain03 1 month ago
@Whatsmynameagain03 Which means you prefer Michael Ball over Nick Jonas. That was my whole point.
appleisonfire 1 month ago
@appleisonfire For the 10th anniversary, ALL of the actors that had played roles in the production since it's introduction in London VOTED on who did the best job in each role - these are the performers who received the most votes. Michael Ball was voted as the best Marius by his fellow cast members and the cast members of 8 other years of productions. So as much as I know you would love to live in a world where there is no objectivity in bias, I'm afraid it doesn't exist.
Whatsmynameagain03 1 month ago
@appleisonfire Because you see, at some point, when enough people prefer one thing to another, there IS an objective "betterment" attached the said thing. And anyone who has a clue about music and musical theatre will prefer a real artist (the one you hear singing here) over a washed up Disney star.
Whatsmynameagain03 1 month ago
@Whatsmynameagain03 I think Michael Ball is better, with no doubt actually. It seems you hate Nick Jonas though.
appleisonfire 1 month ago
@appleisonfire I strongly dislike anybody who tries to be something they are definitely not. Just because you have some vocal ability does not mean you have any place in a production like this. I don't "hate" Nick Jonas, I resent the fact that he was allowed to play a role he could never do justice.
Whatsmynameagain03 1 month ago
The great talent of this man is that you can hear the controlled power in his voice when he is singing softly and the utterly amazing sound when that power is unleashed....wonderful! Why can't I find more of Michaels great recordings on youtube. I have plenty of cd's but no idea how to upload them with videos and all that. Marvelous expression in his voice, far more so than the latest artists who sing in the same style currently in vogue.
Fairisle4 1 month ago
But another post said it. Close your eyes shut out the visuals for both performances. Just listen to them, and you will see the difference in the two. They both did a great job at this powerful song, but you can hear the emotions and despair in Michael's that you can't in Nick's. It's that simple.
ShieldMaidenBLS 1 month ago
I am the last person to put another performer down. It's a hard thing to do, honestly. But people keep constantly comparing Nick and Michael in this song. I realize Jonas fans are going to do that, and I gave it a fair listen and liked what he did. I simply prefer Michael, and always will. I heard a vast difference in the two, though I did like what Nick did with it. It's our opinion, can we get back to enjoying this performance, now instead of picking it a part for possible errors?
ShieldMaidenBLS 1 month ago
Broken chair might be a more apt title. That's what would happen to a chair if Michael sat down on one. Ball is a very apt name
jettrockpower 1 month ago

LGKxBEaTzxFTW 3 weeks ago
@LGKxBEaTzxFTW So you think having the same expression on your face throughout the entire show is showing emotion? He has the same expression on his face when he's supposed to be deeply in love with Cosette as he has when he is mourning the loss of his friends. I know that facial expression is the only way to show emotion, this is also do-able through song, but like his face his singing has the same feel in it with everything he sings.
outsiderpinglevinen 3 weeks ago
@outsiderpinglevinen Agreed. Michael Ball absolutely perfects this song. I can't imagine what they were thinking when they cast Nick Jonas as Marius. It makes me wish I was born fifteen years ago so that I could go see his performance.

So true, and absolutely no voice. No comparison can be made. Nick Jones has put me off watching my anniversary Les Mis DVD because hsi voice is so rotten. Alfie Boe, now that's a voice and a fitting replacement for ColmWilkinson as Val Jean. You obviously know your music -

AlatarielNerwen 1 month ago
Actually I think the most importance difference between the two is that Michael shows all the emotion in his voice, all of the acting simply supplements that. On the other hand, Nick does a great job using appropriate acting, yet it doesn't reflect in his voice. I could listen to Michael all day and I can fell and picture the emotions his character is feeling, yet simply listening to Nick doesn't paint the right picture.

Nick and Michael have different tones, but they both did an awesome job with the singing. Michael had more emotion in the beginning than Nick did. It was like Michael was telling a story in the beginning moreso than Nick was. Thumbs up to both of them though:))))
ajashcash17 1 month ago
We all have our opinions, and I thought Nick was good. But more emotional? How does one get more emotional than this performance? You can see and hear the agony, and grief in Michael's voice here. The way he throws his arms down when he sings "My friends, my friends don't ask me, what you're sacrifice is for?" Nick was weak at both ends of the range in this song, where Michael's gets more powerful. My opinion but one that has been developed for more than 20 years of this play.
ShieldMaidenBLS 1 month ago
My opinion? Acted, sung, actually was Marius best. Michael Ball. Love that guy. Wish I had a time machine to see him perform it on stage.

Strange... but.. really I think that Nick's version is just better. I love Nick, jeah I'm his fan, but I can say that even my mother said that he was more.. emotional. Look at Nick... he has tears in eyes. His singing is so powerful, wonderful. He is amazing.
I didn't say that Ball is not a great singer, or something, ok?
aborkowska8 1 month ago
People have mentioned that Michael sang this better, but didn't act it out. This was a concert, celebrating Les Mis's 10th Anniversary. The actors were not supposed to act, just sing their parts. But as with Colm Wilkinson, Philp Quast, Ruthie Henshall, and Michael Ball you can hear the purity of their character's emtions in their very words! That is what made them fan favorites! I've always loved this play, but these are my favorite actors that have played it to.

It's hard to judge acting when both actors are forced to stand stationary in front of a mic and 3/4 of the shots don't show their faces. My main complaint about Jonas's version is how clipped his words sound. He may be doing it for effect but it ends up sounding like he's running out of breath. :( That said, his age is certainly more believable than Ball's.
komoriuta89 1 month ago
if u honestly believe that nick jonas' performance is in any way superior to Michael Ball's whether it be the singing or the acting, your are suffering sever dillusions and should probably seek out professional help. Their singing is not comparable so i dont feel its necessary to explain that any further and those who say nicks acting is better are first off, wrong. Nick looks stiff and awkward (just bad) and 2nd you are just searching for somthing to credit him with there is really no cred ernd

You however completely misread the comment and thought it was about how Nick supposedly was a much better Marius, which is silly of course.
xmentosx 1 week ago
@xmentosx you're obviously a nick jonas fan and it's noble of you to stand up for your icon, maybe you feel a little scorned or something i don't know but what your are saying is not what i meant i was simply jokingly asking why a comment praising nick jonas was the most liked on a michael ball version of this especially after all the crap they give nick on his version and also i have nothing against nick jonas and i am one of the few les mis fans who had no problem with him playing marius
DrinkOmally 1 week ago
@DrinkOmally "You're obviously a nick jonas fan" don't assume, because right now you made an ass out of you and me. Ass-u-me. Once again I state the original comment was not about Nick Jonas being oh so awesome and dreamy. It said Nickyboy was worse than Michael Ball and that this version of the song was far superior. The only thing Nick did better was the acting.
I'm not sticking up for anybody. I'm just telling you that you misread the comment as some sort of Jonas-love-fest.
