I was fortunate enough to see her live earlier this month at the Belly Up in Solana Beach. She put on a great show; in fact, though she was the opening act for Dr John, I think she ended up stealing the show. I met her briefly after the show and got her to autograph her new CD for me, and she's very down to earth and friendly. Do yourself a huge favor - buy the CD and see her live!
WOW! What a great performance on an old Elvin Bishop tune. I hope I can make it to Hartford Saturday night to see you at Black Eyed Sally's. Much Thanks, beautiful singin', Len
Just bought the album - Great album, but this live version is far more emotive than the studio mix. Delbert must be proud. I know I would be if I'd penned this tune. Come to England soon Janiva.X
We all get smarter as we learn along the "highway of life" and I 'm no different. If there ever was a song-a sound- that describes where I am at in my life now it is Janiva's performance of this beautiful, beautiful song. Thank you, Janiva...peace and happiness to you. Thank You, again
Janiva Magness served us the blues in style last Saturday night in Oklahoma. What a show! She has such a rich and powerful voice. A natural blues singer. She could sing nursery rhymes and it would come out the blues. I am sure Ma Rainey and Big Mama Thornton are grinnin' ear to ear. If you aren't moved by that performance, you'd better check your pulse.
My first exposure to this song was Delbert McClinton, and he does a hell of a version, but this young lady has so much soul....excellent post, thanks.
I caught Janiva with this band when they came thru Dallas earlier this year--and was mighty impressed
(and I am nothing if not jaded). Not a weak spot amongst them, and as a fledgling producer I have to love their understanding of the importance of the dynamics of a song, and leaving themselves somewhere to go (and come back to).
See Janiva how she performed at Rawa Blues Festival in 2007! She is of the highest class.
