im planning of building the airfix scale model version of this...after taking a break from ww2 models i have a big instrest in the vietnam war and i just wanted to know ...did they use this in the vietnam war??
Bert Kinzey's book "F-5E & F Tiger II" says that variants E & F were primarily designed for export and note for use with US forces. Was Vietnam an exeption or were variants A and B used?
F5 still maches with the new airplanes like T-50 golden eagle, Master 346, AMX(resouding failure from italy) and many others advances cheap fighters and advances trainers.Sorry! About F20 there is nothing do discuss, it wins all in peformance and flexibility.Sorry
we still have over 150 of them here in Norway and some shabby f16 s, but most of them sre sendt to afghanistan and libya now hahahhaha waiting for the cheap f35 to arrive
@supadi175 I checked out your channel and i was just wondering what you are doing commenting on this video? You would know what about anything mechanical?
The F-5 is a very slipper fighter and would have dominated any MiG of that era. Hell, during the F-15's combat testing, two F-5's could take out the F-15. They currently use the F-5 to simulate modern day Su-27 in Air Combat School. WTF?? They were sitting on a winner the whole time, but instead, they thew the F-4 at the problem. Boggles the mind.
The F-5 Tiger II should have been use in dogfight against NVA Mig-17 Fresco, Mig-19 Farmer, and Mig-21 Fishbed. The F-4 Phantom was too fat to turn and wasn't meant to use in aerial combat or dogfight. The F-5 was maneuverable, could cllimb, can run, and can turn to knock out NVA Mig fighters.
@SilentEagles It damn sure could've held it's own....this little bird was a mean SOB. It never got the recognition, but the Air Forces that fly it are among the best.
Not to undermine it's role in Vietnam but I can't understand why TAC used it in the unglamourous role mainly as a measly ground attack aircraft. Personally I think it would have faired a lot better in dogfighting MIGCAP missions than the hulking F-4 would have done. I guess the old "bigger is better" mentality still held strong!
The only aerobatic team performing its displays with 8 supersonic fighter jets. With the display performed in Baku/Azerbaijan on 24th,August 2001 they are the only team that has already performed a display to a crowd of 1.000.000 people,They are the only team representing Turkish Air Force and Republic of Turkiye wıth NF-5 A FREEDOM FİGHTER..!! NAME İS TURKİSH STARS
We had a lot of great planes back then like the Tigers, Phantoms, Voodoos, Sky hawks and the Thunder chiefs. I'm not a pilot so I have no idea which was best but the Tiger and the Phantom were my favorites to look at. I know looks can't kill.
I wonder how come the F-5 wasn't used for air to air in Vietnam. It is surely much more nimble than the F-4 and much easier to maintain. I know the F-5As didn't have a radar but at least they had a cannon which the F-4 did not have til much later in the war. The E model certainly could have done well with it's more modern weapons capabilities.
I agree they should have but the F-4 has more weapons it can hold air to air wise they kept the bombing to the F-5 and F-105 but you are correct the F-5 would do well
Yeah the F-5A/C saw combat (the Tiger I) they USAF took them in first as an evaluation then they were turned over to South Vietnamese Air Force. They were mainly used in combat air support and interdiction in South Vietnam.
The ones the Communist captured after the war were highly prized because of their easy flying and ease of maintenance over Russian fighters.
Lots of folks claim a bit of conspiracy when the DoD went with the F16 over the F20 TigerShark. The F20 cost 3X less than one F16 and proved to be more maneuverable. Much like the F8 Crusader III which proved to be as fast and more maneuverable than the more expensive F14 which the Navy opted to buy. These F5As are SVN "Skoshi" Tigers which fought to the bitter end of the war.
Makes me wonder what the pilots of the f-5 in the aggressor sqaudrons would have been capable of doing updated into the f-5g better know as the f-20 tigershark. Would have been very interest me thinks.
I don't know why the F-5 was used as an attack platform, it is one slippery fighter with an experienced pilot in the seat, better than any MiG at that time. Years later, it would give the F-15 Eagle a run for it's money.
The F-5A/B/C was used as attack plane during the Vietnam War. It was designed for having a cheap fighter that could be exported in mass numbers across the world.
The F-5E Tiger II is the famed aggressor bird from Red Flag and Top Gun, it was developed in the 1970s to replace the F-5A, and the USAF did see use for it in the aggressor role.
The F-5E is a tad bit larger than the F-5A, has a radar, and is more powerful. It has wingtip pylons for sidewinders, where the F-5A did not.
@STRIKEEAGLEE you are right. If the plane has the stripe wrap around the tail end it belong to Bien Hoa air base. My dad used to work at Bien Hoa air base as VNAF.
@STRIKEEAGLEE The 522TFS (my squadron) was part of 27TFW, at the time (1970) flying F-100's.
These are VNAF birds, it's very hard to see, as the markings are subdued, but they are AFVN, the roundel was VERY close to USAF, but outlined in red, the bars were yellow. But, you can see the AFVN fin flash on the tail just above the serial no...had a couple friends @ Bien Hoa that said AFVN had 2 sqn there, with USAF advisors, and that they were hell on the VC, real demons in the air.
Are these American or South Vietnamese?

There aere yet 20 F-5 Northrop( known as the Freedom Fighter in the could war-old-times)still oporative in the Air Force of Spain (Europe).
They are used as pilots training, and all them are going to be reshaped and modernice.
marckus100 3 years ago
Yep, in most cases the F-5A/B/C is the first and only supersonic fighter a lot of air forces had for a time.
The United States Navy just recently re incorporated F-5E/F/N (Tiger II) back into its DACT program. After they got rid of it during the early 1990s.
