With all due respect to this version of the band, using the word "original" in the band name (or is it just the video name) is misleading, when the band does not include the original lead singer Jay Black. It's especially strange given that the original band was famous BECAUSE of Jay Black's vocals. While the new Jay does a good job, anyone who is a true fan of the original band isn't fooled and will find this to be closer to a good karaoke experience.

I'm confused. The guy wants to put the Americans back as a group but doesn't get the Jay's (Traynor or "Black" ) nor does he get Kenny Vance. So real Americans, who are currently performing on there own, are not in this new group because a "name" has been purchased again by someone else.

This new fellow sings pretty good. The problem is, since this is a vocal band (id est, there is no Rick Wakeman or Jimmy Page), The audiance wants to see and hear the earlier lead "Jay Black". Jay, who was so good with The Americans in the mid-late '60s can find any backup group to produce a better sounding experience. Makes me wanna buy his albums again.
i would have to agree with most of the people posting that the original Jay Black AKA David Blatt is much better then the replacement which is currently touring as Jay Black. The original Jay just hits the high notes much better even at his age now. Check out the video of (this magic moment) of him live on stage and much older with gray hair and still sounds awesome. There is only one Jay.

@rocmaven Listening to the songs, I can't pick out a single one of the backup voices, they all blend as backups should. It wouldn't matter who was singing backup if they could harmonize. But there is no mistaking the lead singer. It's either Jay Black or it's not the voice we all associated with JATA when they were making hits. By comparison, the newest group sounds weak, especially the lead singer. Jay Black is in his 70s now and still sounds like he did when he sang "Cara Mia" and had a hit.

A judge decided that the name Jay & the Americans was an asset that Jay Black/David Blatt could use to help pay off debts. The name was auctioned off and the original founding member bought it. It's all fair. So Jay #3 comes along and he is good. He is not Jay Black and no one will ever be Jay Black but Jay #2.

This new fellow sings pretty good. The problem is, since this is a vocal band (id est, there is no Rick Wakeman or Jimmy Page), The audiance wants to see and hear the earlier lead "Jay Black". Jay, who was so good with The Americans in the mid-late '60s can find any backup group to produce a better sounding experience. Makes me wanna buy his albums again.

i would have to agree with most of the people posting that the original Jay Black AKA David Blatt is much better then the replacement which is currently touring as Jay Black. The original Jay just hits the high notes much better even at his age now. Check out the video of (this magic moment) of him live on stage and much older with gray hair and still sounds awesome. There is only one Jay.

No one stabbed Jay Black in the back. The original Jay And The Americans broke up in 1973 because of David. David went out for years as Jay Black And the Americans. He owed half a million in back taxs and lost the name in court. The Jay And The Americans thats touring worldwide now, own the name and are the real deal. Their are 3 orginal members (Sandy, Marty, Howie) & Jay #3 Reinecke , who is magnificent. Go see them, you will love them like every other JATA fan. Simply the best.

@rocmaven Listening to the songs, I can't pick out a single one of the backup voices, they all blend as backups should. It wouldn't matter who was singing backup if they could harmonize. But there is no mistaking the lead singer. It's either Jay Black or it's not the voice we all associated with JATA when they were making hits. By comparison, the newest group sounds weak, especially the lead singer. Jay Black is in his 70s now and still sounds like he did when he sang "Cara Mia" and had a hit.

A judge decided that the name Jay & the Americans was an asset that Jay Black/David Blatt could use to help pay off debts. The name was auctioned off and the original founding member bought it. It's all fair. So Jay #3 comes along and he is good. He is not Jay Black and no one will ever be Jay Black but Jay #2.
