@800adam008 If you pay attention to the small things and the dynamics and listen, you'll learn a lot from this, prob more from others he's done or other drummers for that matter. Impressive isn't always being big, loud or fast. Complexity and dynamics are the 2 hardest things to master a drummer, especially when you're improving.
Ok you assholes out there - the dude is A GREAT HUMAN DRUMMER. All drummers even BUDDY RICH made mistakes. So cut the crap guys and watch and learn. There's even this vid on youtube with buddy fuckin up royally and cussing in the process !!!
@JesuitFarmer... That would be Buddy Rich.... I'm pretty sure that's who he's talkin' about. @Drumboy81... I surely agree. He's pushing himself. For percussionist, like myself, who picked up sticks at 12, rather than Two; You MUST push boundaries in order to be creative. That's the only way to become a better player...
fan-bloody-tastic! i thought it was just gonna end with the quite roll with the snare roll off, that would've been so poetic! but sounded like more was to come
waow i was there, he's just freakin awesome... and very sweet, i got to talk to him a little bit after that.... but my favorite of the night was Cyril Atef... the guy's weird and very unique
I don't understand all the negative comments to this solo. I don't think he was lazy in this solo. Personally, I think this was a more creative, dynamic and musical solo compared to the more flashy stadium-like solos he normally does. John Blackwell is so creative and is constantly pushing himself. Even though he sometimes fucks up...and that's what I love about him. He doesn't just play it safe...he's exploring boundries. :D
@Drumboy81 AGREED - and he's dropping some high skill technique in here. Definitely not a 'commercial release' kind of piece . . . pure experimentation, as in "how far can I go with mixing everything up and create something cohesive and flowing".
To all of you who make Negative comment about my Brother.....Were are you on ur set and what kinda history on the drums u have when u accomplish the goals he has on ur drums and have played as mini gigs on and of camera on stage and traveled around the word and all you have to do is show up and your Drums and stick are in place for you to play when you reach that accomplishment hola back till the SHUT YO MOUTH AND DO PRACTISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yeah this seems to be one of his "lazier" solos.. i mean he doesnt look as lively and exact as usual, but still good.. and i think we can all agree on that..
Seems lazy and amateurish to me. Shoddy rolls. Lots of mistakes. No planning or structure. There are so many more valuable players to watch and learn from, imho.
I love John Blackwell jr's drumming. Let me say that right off the bat. He has certainly been an inspiration to me as a drummer. That being said. Does anyone notice that he screws up a lot live? More so than other professional drummers of his caliber. Nothing TOO noticeable, but stuff like at 1:08.
Somehow, I don't think he plays to sound "precise". Dave Weckl and Thomas Lang seems more like the type of guys that do that. I like both of those guys as well, so this is not a "put down" :-) Anyway, I think JB is more of a stream of consciousness player, meaning a lot of the stuff he tries, he doesn't "practice". Tony Royster, Jr. is the same way, except Tony commits himself to play whatever he hears in his head. If he doesn't pull it off cleanly, he just grins and tries it again! lol!
Right, and that is cool in its' own way. Also, by "screws up a lot" I meant that that was relative. Relative in the sense that he is professional and doesn't let his impulse for improvisation get in the way of solid drumming 99% of the time.
Le seul vrai killer que le drums addict a ramené en gironde avec Simon Phillips en 2009..si j'avais organisé le Daddict je ferai venir Blackwell tous les ans

In a way i really like this way of gentle yet groovy drumming. ofc im not saying that he only goes for this style, i've seen him do other stuff :>
This makes me wanna sit down and play at my own drums :D hoho
Too bad though that he droppes his stick at about 2:23 , but he recovers nicely ;D
