This album was and is a masterpiece. I have loved it so long. Amazing how they masterfully wrote it to tell a story in each song, and again as a group of songs, yet on an induvidual level, it speaks to each of us about our circumstances. ELO had a lot of great music, but this is the jewel in the centre of their musical crown. Divinely inspired...
@monsterchildofdeath I agree that this was probably their most underrated album. I loved this album. Hard to believe this came out thirty years ago and still sounds fresh today, especially when you compare it to the crap that is out there on the airwaves now. The only album I would rank higher than this from ELO is "A New World Record." Even that one didn't have the concept this one does though. All the songs fit together so nicely to tell a story. One of my all time favorites most definitely.
It is amazing how true to life this song is NOW!! If you listen to the first line, he wants to go back to the 1980's!! Wow, I remember being a small girl and listening to this 8 track and now I understand this song!! It is about being in the future and looking back and here we are, doing just that and wanting to be back in the 1980's again!! Wow, what a trip!! LOVE THIS SONG!! LOVE THIS BAND!! Missing those days but hold the memories in my heart forever!! ☺♥
Come on ELO fans I am trying to get them elected into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Get a petition going . My e-mail is horsey1@new.rr.com. I will forward any signatures to the rock and roll hall of fame of ELO's behalf. come on we can do this for them!!!!
It is music like this that gives creedence to the belief that music is indeed a universal language. Just replaced my original vinyl album with a fresh download of it from Itunes. ;-)
Remember the good old 1980s. When things were so uncomplicated. At the time (1982) you'd nodd sagely and think "yeah, how can stuff get any more complicated than now?" Little did we know.
@zamora98 Hej there .. yes you are so damn right! And that line give me tears in my eyes, as well as "I got a ticket to the moon, but I rather see the sun rise..in YOUR eyes". omg *sob*
Last 30 years things that really means anything seems to dissapeared, as well as REAL music, *Ancient hugs* /H
Jeff is one of the most talented song writers ever and an absolute genius. I have enjoyed the music from ELO for more than 30 years, most of the crap produced these days barely lasts 30 months.
Love this album. Granted, I love a lot of albums, and while I don't know if this "surpasses" all of them (Abbey Road, Day at the Races, etc.), it's definitely different from all of them.
Even now, decades later, it sounds new, and futuristic.
this is my favourite album of ELO & this is my favourite song of all time!!!!! Incredibly original....So nostalgic/ almost film themey.....No other group has ever come up with so many incredible melodies/backing music as atmospheric as them!!!!!! Love u ELO!!!!!!
One of the greatest albums made, themed to 'time travel', each song, a classic, and bought back in 1981 by me at the cost of £3.99 down Walthamstow market, London, E16. Only Discovery, Out of The Blue and A New World Record beat this to the Number 1 slot...30 years on Jeff and it still sounds futuristic
excellent group, look at all the excellent artists that came from england,,elo, pink floyd, black sabbath .led-zeppelin,deep purple and of course the beatles just awsome...
I bought the LP from K mart when it first came out. I still have this album in my collection. Great album, but I don't think it's ELO best. I think Discovery is.
@c15art Mine too! In fact, I think they're better singers - The Beatles were often flat. Great songwriters, but not great singers. These guys have it all.
for Scouzzer, I consider ELO an extension of the Beatles, kind of like where the Beatles left off, ELO and Jeff Lynne picked up the ball and took some of the Beatles ideas and expanded on those to create a totally unique sound
The piano sounds like Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

Remember the good old 1980's? Oh yes, with much fondness, a cheeky smile, a touch of sadness, and a tinge of regret. Pffff, life eh:-)

I hope that what I'm about to say doesn't offend anyone, but I'll be blunt about it:
If Jeff Lynne was as good in bed as he was in the studio, then Sandi was ONE LUCKY WOMAN.
no1elofaniknow 9 months ago
Why, oh, why couldn't we have gotten an instrumental version of this as an added bonus track on the remaster?
no1elofaniknow 9 months ago
what makes me cry is not the song, it's the fact that you dont hear those beautiful piano and drums sound anymore in any of today's songs.

Flying high above, soaring madly through the mysteries that come,
Wondering sadly if the ways that led me here
Could turn around, and I would see you there - standing there.
... As the minutes go by, what shall I do?
I've paid the fare, but what more can I say?
It's just "one-way".
Poetry. Sheer and brilliant poetry. Beautiful.
