I like the Vapors....but I was wondering, did the producers of "Solid Gold" realize what the song "Turning Japanese" was really about? Hmmm, cant help but wonder. Like, were the people in the audience like..."What the crap does he mean??!!" Hmmmm....lol
I worship and adore The Vapors. Now glory and praise are provided to you! How great to see this clip. I have seen the promotional video for this and Waiting For the Weekend, but not this performance. Thank you.
New Clear Days is one of my favorite albums of all time, and funny how, this track is one of the weaker tracks, and yet was such a hit, too.
Wow, thanks for posting this. The Vapors are one of my fav bands, and I've never seen this. Solid Gold didn't deserve them, of course. I'd forgotten how cute David Fenton was.
They were great, they played at a local university. I was 15 and my friend's brother was part of the fratewnernity that organized the gig. They came onstage and looked down at us and said "We're The Vapors from England and we've brought our own mods" and after the show soent a good hour chatting with us. They were way better live than on record!
I remember watching this when it originally aired. One had to REALLY scrounge up and down the TV dial for a rare moment of cool music. And you knew that you would never see it again until someone invented the interwebs and Youtube decades later. It's so easy for the young whippersnappers of today!
Man that top 10 sucked! And I'm a little pissed that Dionne interrupted the best guitar solo of the night! What!? It's about masturbation? I thought it was about getting High? and cultural differences? Still the solid gold dancers and "waxing the carrot" go hand and hand!?
I thought it is so funny when Dionne Warwick says "Go on and Turn Japanese!" when she really does not understand the meaning of the song back then when it was popular! LOL!!! Another great vid!!!
I didn't know what that mean until a few years later (when I was in college)!! It's funny to see this now - after sssssoooo many experiences changes the way you view things! LOL
At the time of "Turning Japanese" I was 14. I listened to the song and I said, "WHAT!!!" I told so many people what the song was about at school and as luck has it I got in trouble, got detention, and then kept my mouth shut!!! Now I wonder if those individuals I told ever figured out I was telling the truth! LMAO!!!
I always and still to this day compared Pam with Holly from "The Price is Right!" They have the same smile, facial expressions, and look in their eyes! Pam (along with Deborah, Lezlie, and Jamilah) seemed to me to be "a chameleon" as a SGDancer. One moment Pam would be sexy, then sweet, then exotic, then the girl-next-door, then something else. For me, Pam was the "Perfect Woman!!!"
looking back at SG and other shows, at the beginning they probably had low budgets starting off. Then as the show progressed, more money was made available which led to more set designs, more costumes (and hotter costumes), ect!!!
Just like you, I am glad that more costumes was introduced, but the same outfits did not make the show boring for me!!! The lady dancers kept SG more and more interesting for me!!!
All right now go Turn Japanese!
Priceless!

Love the Vapors.
But if anyone ever wondered why we created punk rock, look no further than the atrocious dancing/countdown portion of this video. (shudder)

I thank you kindly for the praise you have provided!
Funny how what's "popular" is always what's best "quality". Go figure!

God I hated this show, not as much as "Dance Fever" THOUGH they did have Gang Of Four on once doing "I Love A Man In Uniform"!!

I mught be gay, but to me, she was HOT no matter what her hair style! I had/have what could be the closest to a "hetero" crush on her forever!!
