Never will be anyone comparable to them. They sang well, danced well, variety of voices, and so funny. They only wanted to entertain and make people happy.
"if you run out of dance moves, just do jumping jacks until something comes to you." Lmao! There isn't a thing about these guys and this show that doesn't rock. Theres nothing like it on tv today. Everybody takes themselves waaaaaaaayyy too seriously nowadays.
I like in a couple places Johnny messes up in his choreography a bit but fixes it when he realizes it and doesn't throw off the other guys or himself in the process. That's how you're supposed to do it.
They didn't lip synch. Some of the instrumental tracks were laid down in advance, like Jocko's drums. And they ain't lipsynching those dances. Watch American Idol sometime. A really talented person who has been performing for years gets a week to learn a song, and if they can walk a bit while they sing it, without forgetting the lyrics they win. These guys are learning three intricate dances a week.
I saw them live in the 70s when life fucking ROCKED!!!They sucked compaired to who was at that rock revival..Drifters,Sherill's,Bo Diddley,Chuck Barry.Great Concert!! Nassau Coliseum,Long Island,NY We got thrown out for fighting!!!After being back stage and meeting Chuck and Bo!! Claim to fame.....LOL
I didn't recognize Donny York without his trademark shades in this clip. Also, Johnny, Santini, and Denny wear black undershirts under their gold jackets, something they didn't do in the early days. I know Jocko, Donny, and Screaming Scott are still with the band. To me the band hasn't been the same since Bowzer, Lenny, Santini, Denny, and Johnny left and Chico, and Dirty Dan passed away. Also, my condolences to the current group on the passing of bass singer Reggie Batiste.
I think geoffdoor likes Shanana! He wrote in unintelligeable cockney so no one would see his real feelings. Or else he's like me and nothing else to do! I am going to Google "purple acky." A've a point on me mate!

A magical time and a magical group!! Pure talent and entertainment. What fun Long live Sha Na Na . We 60's rockers and now in our 60's, but still rockin'.
@elamite66 yup I agree, and they didn't want that..they loved the music and did it as a tribute to the originators...my husband and I were friends of theirs....they knew their rightful place believe me....never tried to pass any of the tunes off as their own. A bunch of great guys that loved the music and the originators. In fact Bowzer headed up an organization that fought against those that did and still do today, sing the songs, pass them off as their own and take all of the credit!!
@sleepytimegalz well that's good to know it seems they were a great bunch of guys and I always did like the fact that they obviously thought the music they did was of great value unlike so many people of the time who passed it off as outdated teenage angst and melancholia whereas they viewed psycheldia as the avant garde of a whole new and higher form of music e.g. "In A Gadda Da Vida"?!?! I've said enough as I could not possibly say it any better than you just did Thanks for the info!
@elamite66 oh yes, they were great!! and they did appreciate the music of that earlier time and era, so to speak..they could see it starting to fade in a lot of areas and watched the airplay lessen and eventually stop, on some radio stations, as the owners did think just the way you put it... these guys treated it very respectfully and also the originators ..I loved them for that alone..smile! You are very welcome E. Have a good weekend, well, what's left of it..smile! phyllis....
The 17 people rated this dislike I'm sure must be BLIND!! Or maybe they're just BRAIN DEAD!! I don't know how anyone who could watch and not be entertained. Thumbs up to Sha Na Na for bringing the 50's back to us.
I hate it when people try and immmitate Showaddywaddy. They will always be the best. I don't see the point in Showaddywaddy having Tribute Bands because no-one can be the real people.
@showaddywaddyfan Sha Na Na was formed in 1969. If anyone is imitating anyone, its Showaddywaddy imitating Sha Na Na. And quite frankly, Showaddywaddy blows.
@paddy6062 Imitation isn't a bad thing. In the 70's, everyone copied everyone and that's not a bad thing! Singing other songwriters songs isn't bad, it just shows where they are coming from. Would be abit pointless if they were doing it and came from nowhere. To be honest, Showaddywaddy are a great band, not so sure about Sha Na Na.
@showaddywaddyfan Aw c'mon! SHA NA NA had a hit national US TV show loved by millions amd actually played WOODSTOCK and Jimi Hemdrix was a big fan; that makes 'em great!. But, I suppose SHOWADDY played a few scouser pubs in Essex, singing US rock 'n'roll classics with cockney accents - oh puhleeze!!.
@marcusbondi Haha. You just stick to Sha Na Na and I'll stick to the greatest Rock 'n' Roll band of all time, ok? Showaddywaddy are a great band so you better deal with it. It's been proven that SWW are more loved and don't deny that because as a matter of fact, it's very very true!
@showaddywaddyfan Fine! You love SWW; but please, be very aware that Sha Na Na recorded and performed with rock superstars James Brown, Bo Diddley, Little Richard and Chubby Checker and SNN were in GREASE the movie! But, I suppose SWW may have once opened for Benny Hill and Tommy Cooper at the Blackpool Butlin's!!!! Cheers! ;)
@marcusbondi If SWW got a chance in the US, they would have made it bigger than SNN. If SNN had made it in the UK, they definitely, would have been on the Benny Hill Show.
@merseymichael Haha, make me laugh even more why don't you. SWW are a brilliant Rock 'n' Roll band and so are Sha Na Na. SWW are NOT and I repeat that, they are NOT a pub act. Trust me, they are not. They are brilliant performers like Sha Na Na. SWW also had tickets sold out alot as well.

This show is really bad. In this clip, the lead singer is singing (I think) and the back round singers are lip syncing. The lead singer seems to have hit cambiata (male voice change) at a very late age. The sax is player is not really playing. The notes he is hitting don't exsist !!!
Hate to tell you... but you're wrong on all counts.Lip syncing as we think of the term wasn't at the time technologically viable. for the non-existent sax notes... I play sax. I can assure you that all the notes he plays exist. As for Donny and Johnny's voices, there are indeed people out there who keep that head voice and still have a pair.
If your comment is spawned from ignorance, you are cured, and if from stupidity and/or modern prejudice, please take it elsewhere.
Thank you. I don't have a problem with people disliking a style of music/ group... it is the opening of their mouth (or in this case movement of their fingers) proving them to be prejudiced and/or musically/historically illiterate that mildly vexes me.
@dkarioperez You must not be musical at all. I've been singing for a long time, and even with my deeper voice, I can sing the lead part, just can't get up to where Johnny is. With training you can get four and half octave of voice range. I still have a little over three octaves and I'm a smoker. It's not difficult to do.
@hiya4011 I didnt know that.,how awesome.I loved watching their show so much.In a world with so much bs going on,we could escape the garbage watch Sha na na and have fun.Yeh they were cheesy but thats what was so great about them, but the had talent!!GREASE FOR PEACE!!
@CyprusGuy69 I am English but entirely disagree from johnny to bowser the musical qualities of the vocals seems way better and we missed out on so much great music cause all we ever heard was dodgy English covers .
oh wow this brings back memories of my grandma used to watch theese guys on tv with her all the time she's been gone for 31 yrs R.I.P. grandma I love you
@fuckingoddess I was born in time to live through those years I came to the USA in 1958 and just 10 years later I was in Vietnam WHY ??? thank god for SaNa Na they reminded me of hanging out with 4 or 5 guys under a ramp of the triboro bridge which echoes this was in Astoria Queens NY the place was Irish Italian and German immigrants mostly And we did not take away any jobs !!!! from the so called natives
So much for those lousy excuses for lip synching losers like Spears and Madonna claiming they can't hit notes or actually SING live because they have to dance too.
@GreenBeardsRevenge They are lip synching dude. look at bowzer and the dancers..... no mics. yet there isn t a single audio blemish in their voices while dancing? ? impossible . plus the little clip-on mics hadn t been invented yet .
Some of Sha Na Na guys are still very active.Screamin Scotti Simen, Jacko, Surf Guitar Pete, Excellent stuff too.. They were at teh Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg, KY a few years back. Got a chance to meet and greet. These guys are as great in person as they are in their music.
Mistycat, where have you been? Hope you are not planning another trip to a concert without telling us first! :D LOL!
Well, if you are, take a step stool or something this time instead of your house phone, that way you can kiss Donny ;P How tall are you? Unless you are like 3 feet 4 inches I'd think you could. I am 5 feet 10 inches so I will just walk right up to him and give him a great big wet kiss! :D LOL!
LOL! Alright, next time you see him, kiss his chest and while you are at it you will have a chance to find his nipples-just don't bite them, only nibble! :D He might smack you on the head, that's the advantage us tall people have on short people! LOL!!
On the cheek? LOL! You don't even believe that :P Just make sure you don't have the springs on if I am next to you because if you miss Donny you might get me :D LOL!!
Kristen, LMAO!!!! I'd be very respectful giving Donny a kiss! I'll put a GPS on the springs so they'll only allow me to jump towards Donny! LOL!!! :-D
Judy! ROFL!! I know you'd give Donny a respectful kiss, but not on the cheek! We all know you are 'walkaround Sue" :D LOL! As for the GPS, you know how they work, you end up on the opposite side of where you told it to go, so that would mean you will jump towards me and respectfully kiss me!! LMAO!! at that point, it better be on the cheek! LOL!!
Kristen you crack me up!!! No, I'm stay around Judy! :-D I will show the GPS a photo of Donny & the springs will bring me right to him! If you're good, I'll tell Donny he can kiss you too! LOL!!! :-D
I tried singing this to my daughter again but at 13 she doesn't appreciate it! She told me to stop as I still give her headaches when I sing! Lovely child! :-D
Are you singing again? That Lovely child is right! Now I know why I have such a bad headache, can hear you all the way from the Sunshine State! LOL!! =D

CyprusGuy69 1 year ago
@CyprusGuy69 I am English but entirely disagree from johnny to bowser the musical qualities of the vocals seems way better and we missed out on so much great music cause all we ever heard was dodgy English covers .

So much for those lousy excuses for lip synching losers like Spears and Madonna claiming they can't hit notes or actually SING live because they have to dance too.
Damn! These men turn them all to cinders!!!

I love when Donny sings. My favorites are without his dark glasses.

I think Donny sings this piece better than the original artist, Curtis Lee. I would love to look into Donny's sexy green eyes as he sings this to me.

I better hear about a kiss after you see him this weekend!!
SkippyWalls 2 years ago
Which one? The one in the limo or the restaurant? ;-p
gopherscout 2 years ago
Mistycat, where have you been? Hope you are not planning another trip to a concert without telling us first! :D LOL!
Well, if you are, take a step stool or something this time instead of your house phone, that way you can kiss Donny ;P How tall are you? Unless you are like 3 feet 4 inches I'd think you could. I am 5 feet 10 inches so I will just walk right up to him and give him a great big wet kiss! :D LOL!
dietpepsi202 2 years ago 2
Donny is at least 6 foot. I am just about 5 feet. I can Kiss his chest! LOL
mistycat104 2 years ago
LOL! Alright, next time you see him, kiss his chest and while you are at it you will have a chance to find his nipples-just don't bite them, only nibble! :D He might smack you on the head, that's the advantage us tall people have on short people! LOL!!
dietpepsi202 2 years ago 2
Well I'm only 5'3" but I'd still make an attempt to kiss him on the cheek! I'll put springs on the bottom of my sneakers! LOL!!! :-D
gopherscout 2 years ago
On the cheek? LOL! You don't even believe that :P Just make sure you don't have the springs on if I am next to you because if you miss Donny you might get me :D LOL!!
dietpepsi202 2 years ago
Kristen, LMAO!!!! I'd be very respectful giving Donny a kiss! I'll put a GPS on the springs so they'll only allow me to jump towards Donny! LOL!!! :-D
gopherscout 2 years ago
Judy! LOL!!
dietpepsi202 2 years ago
Kristen you crack me up!!! No, I'm stay around Judy! :-D I will show the GPS a photo of Donny & the springs will bring me right to him! If you're good, I'll tell Donny he can kiss you too! LOL!!! :-D
