I would like to make the Alice: Madness Returns steampunk dress to cosplay, but I'm having a hard time managing the stripes. Would I be able to accomplish these stripes by sewing the box pleat all the way down the length of the skirt?
I would only make one suggestion, to add interfacing to the front side of the waistband. this is what all my sewing reference books say to do...thanks for the tuturoial! i've seen your others and they are so helpful!
This is a great tutorial! I like the box pleats because, as you said, you sort of get the same effect as gathering but it's much neater. Definitely going to test it out.
I really like the tutorial, and yes, that fabric is really cute!
But I have one question. Well, I'm working on a renaisance based costume and the only thing I have to make now is the skirt. But I'm quite short and I'm not sure what is best: a box pleated skirt with small pleats or a gathered skirt? Please answer!
@LittleBulleteye I think renaissance skirts usually have cartridge pleats. But it depends on the look you're going for. Box pleats are certainly neater, but gathering can be made much fuller.
thankyou so much for the tutorial! I was looking for a pleated skirt tutorial, luckiy you got one ^^ I'm wondering, if I want to make a pleated skirt that falls as an A-line skirt in stead of a cupcake skirt (which this one is, right?) How could I do that? I'm going for a more classic style ^^
WOW. Beautiful work on sharing this with us!!! I can't wait to make my own... I've only sewn clothing a FEW times.. Kinda nervous, but I think I can do it! It'd be so much cheaper than buying my own skirt...........
Awesome tutorial. You just took the scary out of zippers for me! I'll be using this to make a dress with box pleats, so much easier than I ever imagined!
I love this video! I love the way you do pleats, I wanted to learn to do it so they all match, like yours.
I have one question that I really want to know the answer to, how come you sewed in the zipper before you put on the waistband? Surely now you'll be able to undo the zipper but there will still be the waistband, which defeats the point of the zipper? Please reply :) x
@charlotte07071 It depends on the waistband. With a narrow one like the one I did, generally it's simpler and neater to have the zipper end before the waistband. With a wide waistband it cant really be avoided, but I think it looks better when the zipper is not part of the waistband.
I'm working on my first lolita dress that I want to use as my businesses uniform, but I need to learn how to make "Inverted Pleats" can you gimmie some type of hint on how to do that?
omg thank you for this tutorial, i needed this so much cuz im gonig to a con in March and im going to be making a Cardcaptor Sakura cosplay, specifically her little red lolita-style dress with white petticoats underneath, this helped me so much on how to make the skirt part :D you explained everything so clearly and well here and it was easy to understand ^ u ^
I looooved this tutorial, it was very very helpful *___* I made a skirt today based on it, and I think it went very well (considering my horrible sewing skills XD)
awww I adore it!!! because I want to become lolita, and in my city there are no places wich sell that kind of stuff, and my mum don't want to buy anything on the internet :( thank you so much!!!
ahh... thank yooou!! this is totally what i needed!! and the way you explain how to do it is awesomely easy!!
thou i did have a question, i was wanting to make a pleated skirt, but i was wanting the pleats to be, just like in the vid, but 2 or 3 in. if i did that, how much fabric would i need? o.o if you could help i'd be greatful!!
@camilamerino I'll get to shirts eventually. But first I want to go over all the basic types of skirts. Drafting a pattern for a shirt can be quite tricky, so I'd like to get the easy stuff out of the way first.
Thank you! This was helpful.

So if I measure my waistband to be.. let's say a total of 36" then my waistband would be 36" wide and my skirt would be 3 times 36" wide. Right :)?

Hi! I was just wondering how you hemmed the skirt? Overlock and invisible stitch? Or folded up with a visible seam? Thank you!

sailorwaterprincess 8 months ago
@sailorwaterprincess Instead of a waistband, you attach it the bottom of your bodice.
