this can be used for rescue missions helping survivors what about debris?
if they pull the survivor but is injured theyr just dragging him\her across the floor
maybe with sharp glass stuff like that they need to focus on debris and hazards for that to be a rescue robot you`ll need to think or more stuff for it to help people out of debris, life or death situations crap like that
Frances, on behalf of the human race, I apologize for all the priest and priestesses of politically-correct behavior that are now converging upon you. (Talk about swarming behavior!) . Please don't let it get to you.
@logtothebase2 Because (1) the child was volunteering for this video (many kids would love participating to this experiment) and (2) we demonstrated more realistic rescue conditions. Why is this irresponsible?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@francescomondada, The child looked ill at ease Frances, stuff can and does go wrong that could leave her freaking out and distressed, even though physical risk was negligible. if the purpose was to make a more realistic experiment WRT a rescue situation there is much more that could be done, with the environment for instance to make it realistic, as a proof on concept, using a live child makes a more compelling viral, but better science?
@logtothebase2 We checked these issues carefully with the parents and the child in advance. The video gives a wrong image of the situation: the child was happy (and told "wow") when the robots started to pull but then did not know what to do, which is the reason for the "lost" expression. On the other side the whole process was boring because too long, which is the main negative point of the experiment for the child.
@logtothebase2 JEEEZ it would suck to have you as a parent. If the kid wanted she could get up. Kids happily get tossed around by their parents, dragged, shoved, thrown, dunked... How is it that getting pulled around by a pack of light-brights on treds is crossing the line? She's not even YOUR child and you're coddling the shit out of her. When frances says he checked, here's how I imagine that conversation went: "Can we pull your daughter around with robots?" "Why not my infant?"
@oEQjet Your right, take your kids to the park, throw em in the air, skate, surf ,rock climb, play! as a parent yes. i would do all that stuff, often. And I am sure Frances made every consideration for the welfare of the child. But if i was a research supervisor i would not sanction this
not enough words here, its about the context, the consequence of mishap, and i question the design of the experiment WRT realism, and yes the words you quoted would make a great headline in the local News.
@logtothebase2 Its not irresponsible at all! Its not like the robots could do any damage. And the idea is to one day use swarm bots for search and rescue, and the closer your tests to reality the better
@ataraxic89 Clearly the Child is il at ease, as evidenced by the comfort being offered stage right, and the expression on her face, also think about it what sense does the expression "using children in experiments" ever sound good, if something , anything, even unrelated to the devices went wrong,
a How would you feel about that?
b Hows that going to reflect on the institution you work for when it goes to the news media.
@logtothebase2 I work for? lol Fool. And Im not crazy and dont assume that something will go wrong for no reason. Unrelated? How would I feel if the building collapsed while they did this? I wouldnt say they shouldnt have used a child because it would have nothing to do with it.
@logtothebase2 you are the reason kids are getting dumb, you are the reason red tape stops bad guys going to prison, please stop assuming the worse and making the world a bad place.
They need to make ones that can climb walls and ceilings, and take humans in an upright position. It won't be long until the machines take over, folks. ;D
@TimeChopper To show how these robots can move a human weighted/shaped object? Look, humans are shaped differently all over. It's obvious you can lift 80-something pounds of phonebook with a robot, but robots actually picking up a child and dragging her without any visible dragging from any section of the body (Like the torso being dragged along with the head and legs) is impressive for an automated machine.
help im on fire and im on the ground! its okay ill get the bots!.... we...are...coming...to ...get... you.....5min later.....10min later... bring back corps....
This was great, I loved that they used a real kid instead of a mannequin or something like that. The look of apprehension on the kid's face towards the end of the video is priceless.
@seanandthat : Comparing this approach with, for instance, the use of a single big robot, to understand advantages and disadvantages of a distributed approach.
@branzombie : she was more impressed by the people filming her than by the robots. When she started moving, she said "WOW", but then had no idea how to behave, and had an expression who look, indeed, a little bit scared.

The color is pre-programmed. Four groups are defined in advance, each group having a defined color (in fact two groups have the same color but are the two lateral ones, separated by the other groups). Each robot knows which group he belongs to and which is the corresponding color. It is attracted by this color and takes this color as soon as it connects.
