The NEW testament doesn't say its ok. Slavery was condoned under the OLD covenant and even then there were pretty strict biblical codes on it. Mistreatment and cruelty were prohibited, and there were limits for how long a person could be kept as a slave.

Actually the bible says you can go to another country and take anyone you want as a slave. That person would then be your property, and his/her children would also be your slaves for life. You were allowed to beat your slaves, and you wouldn't be punished unless they died immediately afterwords. And the punishment was really only paying money, so in effect, these slaves were only worth money, hey didn't count as human. There were limits on slavery of Hebrew people, but not foreigners.
