  • *Fishy stuff here.* Phil has been lambasted for years about his 68' win over Ivy in the 125 race at the IOM.Team orders dictated that Ivy win the 250 race ,which he did and that Read win the 125 race ,which he did. Ivy started over 20sec behind Read in that race and manager to get 11.5sec AHEAD of Read by lap 3. Then during that last lap, Read "Somehow" won by nearly a Full minute !!! Did Ivy really stop for a smoke as legend has it, to "let" Read win ? HELP US OUT PLEASE MR.PHIL. Cheers.

  • just back from tt. autoraphs read agostini robb and GEOFF DUKE.. SAW PHILL RIDE MANY MANY TIMES had a chat with him in isle of man a very nice bloke.

  • that's mike duff from canada on the podium in 2nd place.

  • I'm too young to remember Phil Read , Ago, and Sheene.....but these guys seem so genuine compared to the pampered megastars of today.

I love the plain black leathers and starting your own bike...very cool.

  • I laughed hard when Ferry Brouwer told Read to fuck off.

  • @2oldcoots It would have been even funnier if he'd told you to fuck off.

  • The Ivy incident will always cloud what was a brilliant career for Phil Read. I knew Bill, a lovely, honest, loyal man, willing to listen, to help, his word his bond. Phil was indeed a very nice man, I'm told, by people who knew him, but he only ever thought of 'Nr 1' when it came to image, bikes, and money. Big ego. Sheene was the same, from what I've heard (I knew Frank Sheene when I worked at St. Bart's weekends, helped him carry the bodies down from the roof, for the students to train on).

  • Phil W. Read is one of the greatest. And if B. Ivy would have been the better man, he surely would have taken the title in 68, by winning all the races after Read has won the 125-title. 1974 the last win of a championship on a 500-fourstroke was his ! Prince of speed : Phil Read !

  • Ivy gave 125 race wins away to Read in order for Read to win the title so you could say the same thing about Read if he was good enough to win the title he would'nt have had to rely on Ivy's generosity in helping him. It's a poor sad excuse of a man who could'nt return the favour

  • I call him Read the shithouse after what he did to Ivy reneging on team orders to let Ivy win the 250 crown after Ivy had let him win the 125 title. Never had any time for him after that

  • Nice, if a little surprising to see a great rider posting on Youtube. There are some awesome films kicking about if you can find them. As one who is constantly awestruck by the great footage on Youtube, but eternally saddened by the amount of loonies who post idiotic comments, I'm quite thankful for threads like this. All very sane..........

  • Hi Phil, thanks for the years of watching you on the track.

I got a Duke video and there is a part about the time you tried the Gilera for Geoff Duke team.

Nearly fell off the chair when I heard Duke saying such daft things about you like " good rider but not world class.

How much more do you have to do to be world class?

You say that he even critised your gear changing.

    Well whats it all about?

Good luck and keep practising the gear changes.

  • Hi Phil!!

Rather surprised to see you here!

But anyway, we spoke to eachother at the Rockanje Classics, last May. Now I know you speak to a lot of people, but I'm the bloke that was restoring the "33 Ariel SQ4. I uploaded a film I shot at the Rockanje races, and you're the star. To see it, go to my page and look for Rockanje the Movie. Also a photo-compilation in "Classic racing at Rockanje ". Enjoy!!

PS. If you would like to have the original pics, send me a message....

    Cheers, Kees Knegt NL

  • phil saw you at the german moto gp today, you were on tele, julian mentioned you on eurosport...

  • Thanks for the correction. It could have been 1972/73, before Phil joined MV. In those days Phil occasionally rode the Norton JPS if I remember well.

    Regards.

  • "Bourneville", thanks for the correction Phil.

Help me please: were you at an international race event in Rungis, France, around 1974 (Ago, Pasolini, Sheene etc... were there), I believe you were riding a Norton John Player Special? Was it actually you?.

  • in that year, Read was MV oficcial racer, it would be strange another machine. Was official and World Champion 7º, and won over Agostini with Yamaha. the second racer was Bonera

  • Phil Read on the MV in the Burnanville curve at Spa Francorchamps... I still can hear it. Nice to see you again in the French documentary "Le Cheval De Fer", by the way.

  • I think you mean the Bourneville curve, "the Coco's" as us riders called it after the chocolate name.

Yes, a very fast, dangerous and exciting circuit, on which I once help the absolute lap record at around 134mph. Cheers, Phil

  • You're THE Phil Read? I still have your autographs...

  • Yes, now in Nice after watching Monaco F1 and staying with old racing friends and relations of the famous Syd Lawton, on who's Norton Dominator Brian Setchell and I won 3 Thruxton 500 mile races and Silverstone 1000km. This week I go to the T.T. Centennial races where I will 'parade' on 500cc GP Gilera with Ago on one of my old 500 MV's.

  • the best style i´ve ever wached, and one of the best historial....still you can see him winning in La Bañeza each year

  • I still have my winning DukeBSA and would love to race at La Baneza again. I only need my 2000E expenses to bring my team. Phil Read, World Champion x 8

  • Hi Phil: i´m Angel M, and were talking with Falagan so they agree about your expenses: hey everybody :come to La Bañeza and see P Read winning as a great champion ¡¡¡ spectacular, spectacular

  • Angel, please ask the Club President, Mr Falagan, to confirm this by email to me. My La Baneza race winning DukeBSA I have not raced since last June, so it needs some tuning up, for an old man to be competitive again. Cheers, Phil

  • tomorrow it will be done, champion

  • It wasn't against Bill

Ivy, Read just refused to follow the factory's orders.

  • It was simple. Bill said he could beat me, so we raced and I won the championship, but after some very exciting racing with Bill. I set this series on fire by my action. Phil

  • Great days Phil the sight (& sound) of you & little Bill on those fantastic V4s will stay with me for ever.

  • one of the greatest riders ever,

    thanks for posting...

  • but leaves a lot to be desired as a human being... look how he treated Bill Ivy...

  • I know that'bad boy'phil read has not always had an very good reputation, but would you be satisfied with second place ? an race is still an race, and that day, bill ivy was beaten, ...best wishes.

  • the greatest ¡¡¡
