He sounds like a true, unattached vagabond! It is what you might expect if you encountered such a character telling his story by firelight after traveling by foot along a worn pathway. Come daylight he has moved on.
Love this. Vocally rugged as the character of the Vagabond is within. Love the slight freedoms he takes with note measures, and some of the raspy word endings. If God had a voice on Earth, it would be John Tomlinson. Wonderful.
Kevinguy247 - LOL! This is a Proms concert at the Albert Hall. It's probably a "last night" concert, which presents patriotic British repertoire in an "anything goes" atmosphere. Check it out on line.
He has a really nice large, dramatic voice but i think he lacks the "line" in this piece...in my opinion it requires a more lyrical quality and that is what separates the good dramatic voices from the great dramatic voices...lyricism
i sang this song in high school for my n.y.s.s.m.a. solo. scored a 99% and went to all state conference. sang with 149 other students in new york state. i sang this song in high tenor. it was written for all parts, not just baritone.
Would a vagabond do things to suit everyone else? I think not. Singing this song his way is the beauty of performing for just hammering out the notes is mechanical and not artistic in any way. One of the best renditions of this piece that I have ever heard in my life.
Thank you SO MUCH for posting these up - this specific performance by Tomlinson is my mother's favourite rendition of "The Vagabond"! You've made her very happy :)
Spine tingling. A wonderful rendition of VW's succinct & perfect embodiment of the national character: military, mystic, stoic.

Good rendition. Sucks I can't perform this song in the same way. Note for note, beat for beat, and nothing in between...

Rather impressive. I'm singing this for a solo recital and was doing some research. Glad I found this.

I can't help but think that this must have been what Vaughan Williams was hearing in his head when he wrote this piece. Very nice.

Yeah, my choir teacher told me to stay more connected, even when there was staccato markings. But, he is an opera singer, so let him be, I guess...

Excuse me? Don't try to make yourself sound smart. Magnanimous means of great intentions.
I'm sorry about that. You're probably a really cool guy.
