  • show me the car fax

  • just one nasty kink. itll buff..

  • It doesn't matter how much money you save on fuel when you're dead. You would die if you hit a moth.

  • this looks scarier than an f350 hitting a concrete wall.....

  • @Edgarwinter I think there was a dummy inside

  • No one promises immortality when you buy a car. No one in any car would have survived this wreck...

Survivability is relative. Are there safer cars? Naturally they burn more gas and have a heavier price tag. But people buy harleys everyday... Safety is another thing that is relative....

  • this was 50 mph not 70

  • that is damned awesome. Really proves how a proper rollcage should work. One thing I wished that the smart car would change would be to replace the conventional seat and belt with a minimum 4 point harness system. Even with the standard stuff, it still feels like the occupant will go past the airbag and into the steering wheel.

  • I'd still rather be in an SUV than one of those deathtraps. At least with the SUV wouldn't have a name as smug as "Smart Car". Honestly, if you drive one of those things you really need to grow up.

  • That didn't look very safe for the driver with the force thats going to hit the driver with he sudden stop.

  • That didn't look very safe for the driver with the force thats going to hit the diver with he sudden stop.

  • Well that would suck! lol. A lot of people are saying how good of an impact that is compared to an SUV?...Well, I'm glad I have my Jeep after watching this video haha. I was in an accident about 2 weeks ago and totaled the other guy's chevrolet malibu. Mine however didn't even look like there was an accident from the inside. lol

  • @topbilla

properly restrained, IndyCar drivers have survived crashes in excess of 100G's

main problem is lack of adequate restraints, HANS device to keep head from flying forward violently

  • You guys can bash it all you want but I'm still impressed..... that they were able to get that little piece of shit up to 70 mph

  • @PuppetMaster1791 Why do you say there pieces of shit? There great on Fuel, I own 2 of them. You must be American, anything that is not a Truck and gets 3 miles to gallon is not cool right...

  • @5tonyvvvv Hey, my F250 gets better than 12 mpg and that's with a 7.3L International. Your little golf carts may be good on fuel but if we ever got into a crash I would only need a hammer to knock out the dings while you would have a free trip to the local morgue.

  • @5tonyvvvv ok so when you get into a head on collision with a semi in your little ass smart cars the only place your going is 6 feet under when i get into a crash with my f250 sure i might be going to the hospital but at least I'm alive and not smashed up and squished into the car like you will be

  • @PuppetMaster1791 LMFAO! OMG! I can't!

  • well one thing is guaranteed from this test, you'd definitely shatter the fuck outta your legs

  • @jontran29

    lol ouch... exactly.

  • breaking legs from hitting head on but then you die when side wiped

  • Sure the car survived, but what would happen to a person in such a small vehicle =| I can't imagine what kind of internal damage someone would sustain when stopping suddenly after going 70.

  • I always thought that they tested smart cars by thowing a machbox at it

  • I tipped one over with my mountain bike

  • you can tell a smart car driver had an accident from the fact that they'll only have a torso

  • If you watch the long version of this video to the end they finally get to the salient point that no one would have survived the impact. This truncated version is only half the story and is therefore a complete lie. Smart cars are deadly.

  • the forces from the deceleration mean you could just have hit this barrier with nothing at all, smart

  • the car may have survived but notice no crash test dummy to show the g forces of the impact.. NO ONE WOULD SURVIVE THIS CRASH IN THIS CAR...

  • @topbilla no one would survive a crash at this speed in any other car. human organs do not support forces like 6 G-equal to a stop from 70 mph to 0 in less than a second.

  • I didn't realize that a smart car could go 70 mph.

  • YER DEAD

  • Smashing in to other vehicle is a lot ofter than smashing in to walls. So tough guys in their cute little 1/2 ton pickups aren't really a concern. I feel as safe in my smart car as I do in my Nissan Z anyways.

  • I'm surprised that passenger door is unscathed.

  • my truck shits these

  • I wonder how this car would fare against my truck with its brush guards?

  • Yay! Another one of these shit boxes off the road.

  • Looks like a wedge of cheese to me. If you own one of these smart car cars we will not break bread. We will not be friends and I will not break bread with you.

lol the backside is like a windsail. lol it probably is.

I wouldnt drive this car out of fear of getting stuck in or on something lying in the road and getting ran or tipped over. What if your passenger farts? I would have to kill him. What if you hit roadkill? Or a pothole?

  • We all know that the smart is safe for his size.. But hey: It's still a fucking small and ugly piece of shit

  • So what happens when you hit something that is taller than a three foot high wall...like half the cars on the road. Oh, it goes through the windshield and smashing your skull into the back of the car...great!

  • 70 to zero in probably half a second... somehow i doubt the survivability of that...

  • Love my TDI, but a cross wind on a slippery road last week pushed me across the highway....I have now purchased a passat wagon for highway......

  • well the car frame is very strong, this is true.

but the car is too light weight, so in a head on collision, most likely it will bounce out somewhere like a golf ball....(imagine what kind force your body/head will suffer because of the huge bouncing....)

there are many 2seaters that have great crash protection score, too.

  • I would rather crash on a motorcycle and take my chances bouncing down the road then be crushed in that little piece of shit

  • @nogol4u I agree. And this is the ideal car liberals want us Americans to drive? :/

  • The door opens but dosnt make a difference when your dead.

  • @Scorpio9519

It will be easier for the first responders to pull your lifeless carcus out...thats something isnt it!?

  • If your in the car what that happens your dead... I'll stick with my big Lincoln, tyvm

  • i didnt know they could even go 70

  • uhhhmmmm, ya ur dead

  • What about straight on?

  • I've forbidden all my family to buy one of these. It doesnt matter how good of a driver you think you are, shit happens. dont buy crap like this just to look "cute", buy something that'll keep you safe.

  • cant wait to see a vid of one of these vs. a semi get uploaded.

  • It's a death trap

  • @ActionSportsPro

    rare scenario

smart cars are Very maneuverable... so I'd be more likely to avoid the crash in my smart car, compared to your dinosaur SUV!

  • @myfartsdontstink1 Common scenario. You waiting the light to turn. Somebody in dinosaur SUV forgets to stop doing 45 mph (not even 70). Your spine will become part of the SUV bumper.

  • @HMCS1997 Never knew...I mean someone in Europe had been nailed by a semi a few days ago in his smart...He's in the hospital (broken ribs) but he's alive...

smartusa insider has the story in English, everywhere else is in German.

  • to you people with all the "oh if it ran into a semi blah blah blah" crap, give this a think: regardless of what you're driving, IF YOU RUN INTO A SEMI HEAD ON YOU AREN'T GOING TO SURVIVE, period. no matter what you're driving, you hit a semi, both going 70, and you will die. i don't care if you drive a friggin hummer made of solid titanium, you're not gonna walk away. now go back to your SUVs. have fun paying a hundred bucks for a fill up every week.

  • @astrAnGeproDuction Agreed, 'semi' is wrong argument. Although, I'm not sure if you realize though that people may simply enjoy SUV and may be able to fill it up lot easier then you - compact.

  • @astrAnGeproDuction motorcycle 1, smart car 0, shit for brains

  • I wonder what would happen if the concrete barrier was traveling at 70 mph as well? It would be a different video. Truly, worse case scenario is an 18 wheeler w/ a lot of cargo traveling at 70 mph in a head on collision w/ a smart car. That would be "real world" test. Showing a collision into a non-moving barrier is showing a non worse case scenario. Did anyone watch Mythbusters on the crash into a wall?

  • @MsPenelopeAftergut A 10 ton tractor trailer hauling a 20 ton low bed with a 50 ton excavator on the back would still be a hell of a lot more of an impact, not including having to deal with the excavator that comes flying through the tractor cab and onto your smart car.

  • no chance of surviving...

  • i didnt thing that piece of shit could do 70

  • Just better hope you don't have groceries or something you bought at the store behind your seat. The only reason this car survived the wreck was because it's lightweight and has a strong shell. But, it's still a super ugly car and really only good for transporting people.

  • I always wondered that, what if a Smart got into a collision, I always thought the owner of the Smart would be in allot of trouble. But after watching this vid, I tend to think that its a safe car in a collision, I like that it has a steel cage.

  • That looked more like 35-40 lol

  • i am speaking from an impartial standpoint. if you are speaking against the car. do a test that is more realistic. nobody is stupid enough to drive into 70 tons of concrete at 70mph.

  • @zach460 no-one is stupid to have a deliberate accident! This test is just showing the strength of the car's build.

  • WOW! It must of had new batteries if it hit 70mph....

  • Smart cars are not smart. You're a tool if you buy one.

  • Rather have a fiesta.

  • yea try a head on head collision and see what happens to that stupid ass car!

    DEAD!

  • @yabodmon

    IGNORANT!

The roll cage makes this the safest small car out there. Try a head-on collision in any other 2 seater and see what happens!

  • @ragnapebble What roll cage has to do with head-on collision - nothing.

That is if you drive normal 2 seater. You need one in Smart since your chance to roll over 10 times higher then any other 2 seater.

I repeat - don't embarrass yourself with nonsense. Mercedes SL is also 2 seater...

  • I didn't know smart cars could go that fast...

  • good thing they dont put concrete barriers in the middle of the highway.

  • fuck me you would have no legs after this for sure lol. safe my fuckin ass are they its a coffin on wheels theonly people who lie about these are sales of these coffins.

  • @onabreeze that may be true but no legs is better than death. also people die in cars and trucks everyday. so what makes a smart more of the death trap than normal cars. in a truck or family sadan you would be just as injured or dead at 70 MPH.

  • @BeeABaw I would have a better chance of survival in a big car fact, ask any motorway police that bigger is always better. More things to crush before it gets to you. Especially if something were to hit you from the rear aswell, the smart car wouldnt be half as good as a bigger car. Why do some people defend these, as you said no better they make out there toughest on the road and idiot can see surely its the oposite people dont buy these for safety if they do there idiots. not smart at all.

  • @onabreeze

Actually if you read the positive comments by cops about Smart car safety at safeandsmart dotcom you'd realize you're completely wrong!

  • @ragnapebble my comment below is right and you lie i know police and they say bigger th ebetter they dont rate any small car fact. And smart trying to white wash small as safe is a sales pitch no one should buy. they should be renamed dumb like its supporters and sales staff.

  • @onabreeze I'm not agreeing with you because "some police officer said so" which I find a weak argument. However, I will agree with you based on the facts and physics as demonstrated in this video.

    /watch?v=QXunnaaYtz0

  • @ragnapebble safe and smart magazine hahahaaa many back handers durr any fool can print what they like especially a smart publisher. They pay people to support there product its misleading and wrong there not safe end of.

  • @onabreeze

Apparently you're one of those people who don't let "facts" interfere with what they "know"!

If this car was so unsafe why did my Smart car's full coverage insurance barely go up, compared to my '96 Saturn with minimal coverage?

Because 2 years of crash test data in the US proved to hard-headed insurance companies that it's a very safe car!

That and the fact that I can replace all the body panels myself in 2 hours! Fender-benders no longer cost $1000!!

  • not bad :D

  • very nice very nice..! quiet impressive....

buy a smart car help the economy guys!!... remember to visit a funeral home to preserve your place. U are helping lots of ppl getting jobs!!!!

  • I'm going to get one and throw some 22'ss on it lol.

  • 0 to 30 in 1 hour new record!!! LOL

  • @bamboonigga12charlie

Due to its low weight (1850 lbs) with a 71hp engine, it pushes my head into the headrest when accelerating. So please keep your ignorant/derogatory comments inside your head, instead of polluting the Net!

  • @MrScrewloose22

Don't embarrass yourself with nonsense - Smart hardly a Porsche..

  • That guy is talking like that if there were people in there they would have survivied. Ive been in a 65mph crash T-boning a truck crossing the road. Although the front end disenegrated, the rest of the truck looked fine. But, I was rushed to the hospital for a broken neck and broken wrist. We totaled a 1989 F250, and thats a big car.

  • @hailfire82997 the smart crash test results are pretty amazing: is is as safe than quite many cars in higher classes, like upper middle class and even some SUVs. Big doesn't always mean that it is safer than smaller cars

  • Quick!!! Somebody get the tweezers of life!!!

  • Buy a smart! and it's also your coffin. Price for two

  • @Cranfan72

This car averages low 40's gas mileage in the "real world".

Plus- that "famous" picture you talk about is actually a Volkswagen!

How do I know? Because the Smart car wheels have 3 lugs. The picture shows a car with 5 lugs.

  • @Cranfan72

The Smart car has recycled PLASTIC body panels. If you saw twisted/bent metal then it's not a Smart car!

Those EPA estimates don't represent actual averages achieved.

  • Comment removed

  • Damn. It hit a pot hole

  • Nothing in this video says anything about the survivability of the crash - only the damage done to the car. The whole point of a large, long crumple zone is to maximize the time spent decelerating in a crash. I.E. the more time spent decelerating in less strain on the human body. This "Smart" car went from 70 to 0 almost instantaneously. No seat belt or airbag could have possibly spared the lives of any occupants. For the same MPG a Prius or Insight is infinitely safer. Stupid idea for a car.

  • @blakeyoself

"Real world" crashes show that your belief isn't correct!

The Smart car's roll cage safety cell and other advanced safety features makes it the best small car for being in an accident.

.... and how do you think Nascar drivers survive worse crashes? SAFETY CELLS!!!!

  • @blakeyoself

"Stupid idea for a car" is your typical gas-guzzler SUV being driven daily by one person!

  • @microcarman1 Did I say go out and buy a Tahoe? There is no reason to buy one of these when you can get a Prius or an Insight that gets WAY better fuel economy, seats 5, and actually has cargo space.

  • but if a fat guy was sitting in there he would be mush

  • i"ll take my big gas guzzling boat of a car any day over these ugly ass excuses for cars. really can you call it a car? a go kart can probably put out more hp

  • @victor856

Hopefully it won't be long before most Americans give you the finger when they see your gas hog on the street.

Have you seen the recent TV promo from a vets group that makes the obvious connection between our 5000 dead soldiers and Mideast oil?

Instead of being proud of your vehicle choice... YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED!!

  • @victor856

So what's going to be your reply 50 years from now to your grandson when he asks you this...

"Granpa, why did you keep buying those big cars when you knew you were using up the oil we'd need to make fertilizer for food and life-saving drugs?"

"I'm hungry granpa... and I can't eat your SUV!"

  • Ur fucked if ur in there

  • Did he died?

  • Yeah, I'd rather be in a Hummer. Not so smart now.

  • These negative comments are from Ignorant people! Go to safeandsmartdotcom for proof! Read the letters.

Broadside hit by an F150 going 45mph... the truck is totaled and the smart people only have bruises!

OR... driving on interstate, comes over a hill, stopped truck across the lane, she hits it head-on doing 65 mph and WALKS AWAY with just a busted wrist! Advanced safety features of the smart (designed by US engineers in California) saved their lives!

& the smart car is cheap to repair! :)

  • @ragnapebble You are so right!!!! Thumbs up for you my friend.

  • hehso are there actually some nice guys who wanna chat with mi

  • I thought a semi was something you lived in.

I am at a loss to try and understand your intellect or arguement

    WHICH BOTH ARE MEANINGLESS.

  • To: pwnt531

IGNORANCE IS BLISS! Read the truth at safeandsmartdotcom, then come back here and post your altered opinion of the smart car's safety!

If you don't come back and reply to this, I'll assume you're too stubborn to admit you were wrong!

  • Wise words my friend.

Ive just ordered a brand new ForTwo Cdi Passion this week and ive had a few extra toys installed including a nifty armrest.

It's a factory order so my little chariot has not been born yet but i can hardly sleep as i'm so excited about it's arrival into my household.

  • I know but with that Hayabussa engine in the back it sure does go

  • Bigger isn't always better. Many SUV's and trucks are poorly designed. Their roof collapses in a rollover, where the smart fortwo's Tridion roll cage (just like a race car) keeps it intact!

  • A lot of comments by ignorant people!

The smart fortwo is the only small car to get a "good" rating in a roll-over test by the Insurance Institute. My insurance cost barely went up when I bought my smart car... testimony to how safe they are by hard-headed insurance actuaries! :)

  • damn, thats one strong piece of metal(THATS WHAT SHE SAID)

  • Aaaaand the quarterback is toast.

  • not so smart now are ya bitchh :)

  • texting and driving jk

  • driver safty is 4 and passenger is 5 safty

  • you suck

  • That little car held up remarkably well

  • @garst1983

The replaceable body panels are not what protects the passenger, it's the roll cage (like a race car) and all the other advanced safety features this US engineered Mercedes built car has! After 2 years of accident data in the US, the auto insurers now know this car is very safe and inexpensive to repair! That's why my insurance is only $200 more for full coverage, compared to my 96 Saturn with basic coverage! SO... SAFEST SMALL CAR EVER MADE + XLNT MPG AND CHEAP TO INSURE & FIX!

  • @ragnapeddle

What's with the long rant about safety when I didn't call the car's safety into question? All I said was there shouldn't be any surprise that the cheap snap-on chasis would shatter like that when it was designed to be easily replaced.

  • when you drive faster than 90km, no matter what car you drive, it is highly probable that you'll die or seriously injured after such a crash. 70m makes appr. 112 km.

I think people like humiliating, despising or underestimating Smart in one way or another. this is just another example.

  • You do realize that this video is actually showing how great the smart car's integrity is, right?

  • @kimomono I still wouldn't drive one above 45mph. Thats just me though.

  • @dourabbawinner Chiken :D

  • thats just buff out

  • and CSHracer fuck u and your phYysics who cares its just a video not a physics exam

  • @redneck92x

Hey, redneck, thanks for showing your stereotypical inability to face science based reality. That video was showing what happens because of physics.

On a side note; I used the think the "Weakest Link"host was a cold-hearted biatch. But in some cases she might be right. To quote:

    "You, are the weakest-link!"

    Later, dust-puppy!

  • <ou realise that your bronco is probably LESS safe than thats smart car, right?

  • @redneck92x

You would probably live in a crash if you were riding/driving in a smart-car, but the car would be totalled. Big difference.

  • most cars are tested at 35-40mph not 70mph!!!!!!!! my scion would not even survive that what car would? OK maybe some cars but this video does not address that
