  • did they put you to sleep when you had the operation ?

  • I don't know how I will get this done, I want to leave for basic training next year and that won't give me enough time to get this surgery done. Maybe sometime later in life, one of my dearest dreams though. -.-

  • How old were you when you got braces and had the surgery? Also who paid for what I can imagine a huge bill? I'm 22 entering my first year of university and I don't want braces nor an underbite (sad face). I just feel overwhelmed thinking about the cost of school and on top of that a massive $20,000+ ; I would have to pay the full bill myself because my parents are struggling financially... How did you handle this?

  • hey man how long would you say it takes for all the swelling to go down..

i am two months post op and still feel I might be swollen...

how long till your face looks like it will permenantely

  • Holy fuck

  • @miketh33 Care to elaborate?

  • hey man i am getting the same surgery although to be honest your jaw looks like it needed more work than mine, i watched your other videos and you truly look like a new person...

if your not to busy could u provide break downs

recovry time for eating solds again, getting active...

also how did you stay calm,, were you nervous and how did you feel when you woke up after the surgery

  • Had this done two days ago, just back from hospital. Although I'm quite swollen (expected that) there's has been little or no pain to speak of up until this point. Now just gotta take it easy and wait for the swelling to go down so I can see the final results. Many thanks to sicnor553 for inspiring to do this and I would recommend anyone thinking of having it done to just go for it, It really isn't all that bad!

  • @joebrogirl74, i had a major underbite too... more major than youd imagine, i had jaw surgery four days ago.. my upper jaw was moved forward 9 mm and my lower jaws was moved backwards 5 mm and now im wearing braces with rubber bands to help my bite to be perfect :)

jaw surgery is a hard thing to experience, so take it slowly and be careful and listen to what your doctor says. :)

and those mean people- just ignore them, they'll bite their words someday. trust me!

  • excuse me, did you say the surgery lasts 6 HOURS??? I'm about to do that, so that's a hard one i guess??

  • Hello.

Are you allowed to get this jaw operation even if you are 14 years old?

  • @boredblah1235 I know it's a long time ago you posted this, but here we go:

No. Unless there's something seriously wrong with you (you can't eat, breath or something) they would wait till your done growing :)

  • I need to have this surgery...Because of my jaw being out of place, I have an accent, my bite is out of wack and Im very self conscious! (Sometimes, when I talk or even eat, I bite the inside of my mouth. God I hate this) Anyway, I only have two questions, how long did you wear the braces and how long did it take to fully recuperate?

    Thank you Ben

  • OMG 6 hourssssssss =/

i need jaw surgeryy but i dont know when.

  • i have a MAJOR undernite and they suck expicially the ppl who make fun of u 4 no reason and i hate i have to b 16 or 17 to get it

  • @Joebrogirl

    Hold on babe:)

  • how much does this thing cost

  • how long did it take to stop hertting

  • I have to wait until I'm 20 to get it done.

'Even though I was told I'd only have to wait until 17 or 18.

My orthodontist screwed around with it, and I just now got braces when I should have gotten them around 2 years ago.

I'm glad you got it done.

  • Comment removed

  • man it's been ages lol, i wish ur havin a great life by now, i know pre and post differ like no other, it's another matter im sure. wish u all the best, enjoy ur life man

  • i have to get surgery too =[[[[

im goin to be so scared.

  • how much were your braces

  • DO you have any scars after it? Or anything permanent?

  • There is no scarring - it's all done inside of the mouth. Mucosa membrane (the slimy inside of your mouth) heals up with almost no scarring.

  • ahhh i have to get this too in december=[

im scared kinda but ill be happy when its all done(:

  • hi im currently going through the planning stage with my orthodontist for a similar underbite surgery. He told me that Id have to get braces for about a year before surgery could happen and that infact, these braces would make my underbite appear worse as they have to push the lower teeth out and push the upper teeth in...just wondering if this was true and if it is how much worse did your underbite appear? thanks!

  • This is true - but it is necessary. It's not that much worse. This video as done the night before my surgery... So - that's about as bad as it gets.

  • well it's the hardest stage of life one would ever pass thru, but to be honest, who cares how u'll look like when ur already plannin out the surgery n gettin ur jaws fixed? so it's fine, think about the up coming result / event, not the current one.

  • just looking at it, it doesn't really look that bad

  • lol dont feel bad someone on youtube has one worser then you i think his name is mad dog he raps

  • Ah! I'm not alone on this one....my bottom jaw looks exactly like yours. And yes, I agree with your reply to ComptomCatt. Especially the "always looking angry" thing. My friends make fun of me, jokingly, by glaring at me randomly while I stare off into space, and that doesn't bother me. But when it's other people, not the ones who know me well....it kinda hurts.

How long did it take to recover from the surgury?

  • yeah, I got an underbite exactly like the video poster. I feel just like you when they stare or when talking face to face you see their eyes go from my eyes down towards the bite.

The worst thing is that you have to have braces before the surgery which makes the space between the jaws bigger. that hurts aswell. :(

  • Yes I hate that, everybody I have a conversation with stares at my jaw!!

  • heey never think like that, never say die, it's u, can u change it? nah, so never care about "others", make'em look rediculous like they dont even exist, coz this's wat they're really about.

  • I have to get this surgery too .

I am so glad I'm not alone :)

  • Hey..when did they put the braces on??

coz they told me they will be putting it on before the surgery but didnt say how long before the surgery :)

  • 1 year before

  • why have surgery for it? andre iguodala doesnt give a crap about his. it just becomes a part of who you are.

  • Many reasons:

    1) Difficulty speaking normally

    2) Difficulty eating normally

    3) Difficulty breathing normally

    4) jaw popping

    5) constant jaw pain

    6) always "looking" angry to others, makes you unapproachable

    Shall I list more?

And it's kind of ignorant to assume someone doesn't give a crap. Anyone who has it, knows they have it, and most do care about it, whether they want to change it or not.

  • yes you have to have one to understand, its difficullt I say I hate mine everyday I wake up with it, I'm not sure what I can do it about it, I don't want my parents to pay a shit load for surgey and all, its more than what you think it its ComptonCatt...

  • i have an underbite 2 but i diddnt get surgery i just pulled 2 teeth out out and problem solved

  • i think mines just a teeth problem and not a jaw problem i fucking hope so

  • lol same here!

  • Ask your orthodontist

  • dUUUUDE MICHAEL PHELPS

  • hi, i was wondering if the surgery hurts a lot because im going to have mine probably next month and im just kind of freaked out wondering if it would hurt...

  • Hey i was just wondering if you can at leat make my underbite better by putting foce to it like put my hand on my chin and lay down and stay like that for like a min and i feel it going in little im not really UNDERBITED alot jsut little. is here anyway with out surgery or anyting that cause serious stuff?

  • You will only injure yourself and likely cause more pain than the surgery actually causes.

    Don't do it.

If you are that serious about fixing your underbite, consult an orthodontist, and ask them to refer you to a good surgeon.

  • hahaha. thats kinda stupid, braces would probably fix your thing

  • Hi there. Do your feel any side effects until now?I mean somthing like numb...? Where you did it? Your face is extremely great. Congratulations!

  • Hey Ben, when you had the surgery done, did the surgeon place titanium screws and plates in? Also, are they still placed in your jaw bones today?

  • Im getting the same surgery in March! (top jaw only) Thanks so much for the videos! You rock!!!!!!!

  • mine is class 3 malocclusion, just like ur case. when ur surgery going on, do u feel anything? i mean do u feel that someone cut off ur jaw and put some screw into it, obviously u get anaesthetic but im still so scared, and is this kind of surgery dangerous ? man Im scared as hell!

  • does post-orthognatic surgery causes osteoarthritis, such as increasing pain in the corrected jawbone during humid weather?

  • ITS MICHAEL PHELPS!!!

    =D

  • Haha, I'm alright with that.

  • I also was told I need orthognathic surgery for an underbite and crossbite. Your videos have helped me consider this surgery and now feel more comfortable with the process. Thanks.

  • I got underbite, and I'm really depressed by it. I have now had the confidence, to make an appointment with an orthadontist

  • I can understand your problem completely

  • u know as u get older does ur jaw get worse

  • There's a chance that it will... Our bodies change as we age. But for the most part, it should stay the same once you are through puberty and your bones are done growing.

  • What does he mean by that? He thinks your jaw will become smaller or something as you age??

  • If your bite is not conforming to all of your teeth (that is, if all your teeth do not touch together) there' s a chance that your teeth (those that DO touch) will crack, and break, and cost a lot to replace/get dentures.

Best to get the surgery now and prevent lots of pain physically and wallet-wise, later.

  • so all your teeth are supposed to touch each other? none of mine do..i have to force my teeth to meet up and my mouth is usually open as well..plus my front teeth go over my bottom but i thought that was normal...

  • what's an underbite? a third class ortognatic? (srry I'm not english)

  • Class III Malocclusion

  • i have a underbite too!

  • I don't anymore :) Check out my other vids.

  • you're like Michael Phelps lol

  • lol a litle. but not after post-surgery! kinda look like a different person. much better looking though =)

  • i have been considering having this surgery done for my underbite. last time i saw my dentist i mentioned it to him in passing when i was there for another matter. he also mentioned braces and a reverse facemask as a possibility. anyone know anything about that? if i do in fact require surgery, what is the best way to present it to insurance to convince them that i need the surgery for medical purposes?

  • I too have an under bite, a condition that I knew about before I even went to a dentist. I have had it for 5 years. I haven't been able to do anything about it because of the fact that my mom's health insurance doesn't even cover it. That really sucks BIG TIME. I can't even bite into anything properly and because of that, my bite is too small. Thats also one of the main reasons my confidence is shot.

  • whats an overbite? and how do u if i have it?

  • An overbite is when your top teeth goes too far forward compared to your bottom teeth. It should be pretty obvious to tell if you have a mirror.

  • my top teeth is forward my lower jaw a litle bit does that meen i have an overbite?

  • Well most people have that. It's just because usually the top teeth fit on top of the lower teeth.

  • Holy crap I just watched my own video... Wow. Lol

  • I'm going in for this surgery in 3 days.

I'm a cleft lip and palate patient, and I have a major underbite.

Watching your videos and seeing how far you progressed really makes a difference for me. It loaded a huge weight off my back and made me ready.

The biggest thing I notice is your voice, I have a voice similar to yours in this video, and was wondering if it would change after.

I must say yours drastically improved and I'm really looking forward to it!

I may even post my own video!

  • I have the same exact issue as you. I had my surgery for my underbite caused by my cleft lip/palate last month on July 3. I just got my jaws unwired yesterday, but they're going to keep the splint on for another two days. Eating and talking is pretty hard because I havent done any movement for the past month lol. How are you doing with your post op?

  • So far my post op has been alright, just ready to get these wires off. I have another post-op appointment in two days, where I most likely won't be getting wires out, but who knows, I've been a fast healer so far.

After a few weeks my swelling is almost completely gone, my lips have been going down the quickest lately. But most of all I'm ready to feel my new bite, hear my new voice, and eat everything in sight. Haha I miss eating solid food so much, I want to eat everything.

  • I've been told for years that I needed this surgery done to fix my bite. I always refused, horrified by what they had to do. I've had braces for about a year and a half with rubber bands, but it's not working so I've pretty much decided on having this done. Your videos have made me feel so much better about getting this done. I admire you for taking the time to document this, and responding so kindly to so many comments! You're such an inspiration. I hope my results turn out as good as yours.

  • A positive attitude will go a long way in your journey friend! (not saying you don't have one though!) :)

  • Awesome videos man, helped me through a lot. If you or ANYONE else is interested on Top and Bottom jaw surgery that's what I had and I have videos on my profile so go subscribe check them out and I'd LOVE to answer any questions :D

  • Thanks again!

  • Hey

I have an underbite as well and i have to get my jaw broke this summer i was wondering how long di it take to heal fully.

  • 2 months.. roughly.

  • I saw the WoW icon there :P

  • Addictions will be addictions...

  • what are braces like are they a pain to deal with or not so bad

  • Braces aren't too bad. They suck at first, but you get used to it. If you take some advil/ibuprofen before you go in for adjustments, there won't be as much pain later. The pain only lasts for about a day after adjustments.

  • does evevery one that is going to have jaw surgery have braces first what is the point with the braces

    thanks

  • wow cool video, i have an underbite but not as obvious as yours but i'm having surgery in 2 days on tuesday, i wasn't really nervous nor am i anxious but watching your videos at least i know what to expect. Thanks.

  • You're one of the few who aren't nervous! Thanks for the comments.

  • hey guys do yall know if United Health Care covers this type of surgery?

  • nice videos hey does everyone have to have braces before the surgery and what is the averge hospital stay?

  • I hate having an under-bite. Makes me look like a scary deep-sea fish.

  • lol. I have underbite too. But some people say its not that obvious. My ortho suggested that I have braces to straighten the teeth and have a 45 minute jaw surgery to push the jaw back and keep it in place with some sorta plates. (my buttom set of teeth bend back to meet the top set of teeth so I can bite)

  • lol @ scary deep sea fish..i can tell alot of thought went into that! =D

  • -_- might buy a spring and attach a light bulb to catch a meal or two.

  • Did I miss something here? x.x

  • You know you sound more nasal before. Did your voice change or is it me?

  • Yes.. It did change quite a bit.

  • 5th Video coming soon!

Braces of the 27th of March!

    subscribe!

  • how much is it...cuz i need it too

  • my personal experience with the surgery (post-op):

-can't open my mouth for 8 weeks

-numb on the chin and lower lip

-it's itchy inside the chin (1st to 3rd week)

    -difficult to sleep (first week)

-change in my voice, it became a little hoarse (until now, 5 months after the surgery)

-difficult to eat (after the archbar was removed), i needed occlusal reduction

-scarring on the skin due to screws

-i hear clicking sounds on my tmj (until 5th month)

    -there's still some swelling

  • how long did it take you to be back to normal.....

  • Watch my other vids for further information. It took approx 2 months.

  • would the military pay for the surgery ??

  • I'm not sure, check with your military financial advisor? If the military has health insurance, perhaps, this surgery can be covered by health insurance under the right circumstances.

  • thanks!!!!!!!!

  • Oh man. I am gettin this done in like 4 months. I dont know whether to be scared or anxious :-|

  • I'll say from experience, that there isn't much to be afraid of!

  • Oh I had that same surgery about 10 years ago and my smile ended up costing my insurance 65K....

  • I hate the surgery two years ago. Any questions?

  • Damn it's so much... I never knew that it was that much..$40K gosh, my parents doesn't even make that much within a year... My dentist said that I needed the surgery b/c I got a overbite but DAMN!! that'll be life time for me... how much did insurance pay??

  • All of it.

  • Oh Cow are you Forealzz.. LUCKY YOU!!! what kind of insurance do you have?? if you don't mind me asking??

  • Blue Cross/Blue Shield or something like that.

  • that's what I have too, how come they cover the whole thing?? are you a full time student?? college?? just wondering b/c my parent's insurance wouldn't cover it unless i'm a full time student

  • Yes, I am a full time student

  • Thanks alot!!

  • So if I understand what you guys are saying here... The insurance will pay for it in full only if you're a full time student?!

  • Yes!!

  • wow! They didn't consider this to be a "cosmetic" surgery? Was your case special in a way that it was a real medical emergency that required the surgery to fix or did you just simply got it paid for ONLY because you're a full time student, no questions asked?

My insurance won't cover the surgery at all because they consider it to be cosmetic unless I can't eat well or breathe. that's why I'm asking. I'm Class III, just thought I'd mention. Thank you!!! :[

  • When speaking with my surgeons, I made sure to only ever complain about the inability to do all of those things. I never mentioned cosmetic reasons.. And always when asked, I responded "This is for functional purposes only.. Not cosmetic"

  • Can you tell me exactly what you said/complained about to your surgeons in order to get this covered by the insurance. I have an underbite/crossbite. My jaw locks and I clench my teeth at night. It would be nice to finally get this problem taken care of with the surgery. Since it is expensive I want my insurance to cover it. I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield HMO IL. Do you think it will cover it?

  • I have the same thing. I also am on a BCBS HMO Il plan. They have agreed to cover my procedure 100%. I am seeing Dr. Kallal (sp?)I had to specifically choose a certain medical group however as my dr. Basically I have it documented that my underbite gives me headaches, soreness, difficulty chewing etc... Let me kknow if you want the contact info of my surgeon, people fly from all over the country to see him. He's done some 10,000 surgeries

  • How long did it take for the insurance to cover your procedure? When are you getting it done? Did you have to have braces before your surgery?

  • I just recently changed to my dad's HMO (I had a ppo and they only covered 25%)) Once the switch was final it didn't take too long to get an answer as long as you have the proper documentation about how crappy an underbite can be! I have had braces since June and the surgery will be sometime between Feb-April, and then I will have to keep the braces on for about another 6 months.

  • wow. no idea why they would tell you that it's cosmetic. Your jaw needs to be aligned properly for health reasons otherwise it an cause erosion, grinding and alot of other stuff. Surgery is JUST as important as the braces themselves, they go hand in hand! Mine was covered by medicare (I'm in Canada but medicare is government and not a health insurance through work-so at the least it should be covered by insurance) Go see an orthodontic specialist not a regular oarthodontist. Good Luck!

  • It's not that bad.

  • My thoughts exactly. People just can't get the "omg painful" thought out of their head.

  • Although it does make one look "tough" overall it sucks having an underbite. I don't like it and It needs to go!!

  • hey... I have the same issue with my jaws... and it's a pain, but the financial aspect of it is really buggy me. How much did your surgery cost you if you don't mind answering? :/ Thanks.

  • Around $40,000... price will differ from area/country/class (le forte I/II/III) etc.

  • You know! I looked exactly the same as you.. fighting with it these years wasn't easy....i did my operation 2 weeks ago!! plzz can you tell me when can i start eating normal again?!! when im gonna look fully recovered!?!?!

  • 6 weeks before you can eat completely solid foods. You will "look" fully recoverd in perhaps 1 month. Those are only estimates. You will still be somewhat swollen after 1 month, but 80% will be gone.

  • Yea, I had already seen the after video when I commented. It's striking. If you don't like the characteristics noted, I'll buy them from you-)

  • Wow, you have a very impresive brow - you must have a load of testosterone.

You're frontal sinuses look quite capacious and as pronounced as a neandertal with thick, heavy, square orbitals. You could look very threatening out in the sunlight. I don't think you'd be bullied.;-)

  • Check out my after videos to see if you think the same thing :)

I am strangely flattered by those comments though. lol

  • i watched your videos a few months ago in fear i would need it, and today it's confirmed that i will :( the surgery made a big difference for you! i've already had braces, so this is round two for me... i just gotta keep my head up :)

  • dont be afraid.. and dont believe all of the horror stories. people just tell the horror stories because it scares (you) and makes them feel better about themselves. it's not as bad as it seems. yes, keep your head up! :)

  • thanks, i've been expecting it since i was 13 (24 now) i just thought braces was behind me :P i dont have an underbite, i have a cross bite, crazy beyond belief headaches lately.. la ti da.. and life goes on...

  • Hey man sorry to be asking this. Bad i have about 2 weeks to decide if im gonna get jaw surgery or not, im thinking no. Im woundering how was the surgery? how was it after words? and how long did you have you mouth wired shut? thanks, and sorry for bugging you.

  • vladster, the surgery isnt that bad. you will obviously be feeling like crap. the surgery has changed my life for the better though and it was all worth it. afterwards, there is a little pain, but they give you medication for that. my mouth was not wired shut, but that is up to your surgeon and their capabilities. please e-mail or message me with more specific questions and I will be happy to answer them.

  • Thanks for replying. I got a few questions. 1. did your parents support you with this? cause my mom is telling me its not worth it and so on. 2. How long did it take before the swelling started to go down? 3. How long before you could eat solid foods? And have you noticed anyother diffrence besides your teeth beining in order?

  • I got it done on 12/11/2007. To be honest with you, you won't feel any pain it's just uncomfortable not being able to open your mouth. You'll go in, they'll talk to you, and next thing you know your waking up from surgery. The first 4 days are the worst but go by fast. I'm on day 8 of lower jaw surgery and have lost 25 pounds and I'm feeling great now other than not being able to eat solid foods. Have your Doctor let you talk to other patients who have had the procedure done that's what I did.

  • is good

  • cool man

  • damn ....thats how i use to look and sound...my face is FAT

  • did you have to get a bone graft?

  • Yes, bone graft was necessary. It came from my hip.

  • alright cool. I had the exact same thing done, upper jaw surgery for underbite with bone graft from hip. Are you happy with your results?

  • You bet.. Can't wait for the braces to come off completely

  • i have to have surgery soon 4 a overbite

  • Holy shit dude I just saw the 3rd video for it and then saw this. HUGE DIFFERENCE bro. I'm having mine in a few hours, I'm so anxious, I was told I was gonna have it 5 yrs ago and todays the day.

    Congrats on the outcome

  • good for u :P

  • dude, you really are like me. I also have a long pointed chin just like you. I've researched and found out that the cost of operation is really costy. but now I'm earning for it. Tnx 4 your video it inspired me. I'm sure your handsome now!

  • how is it detterrent to you health? You have a nice smile at the end of your video, i hope that didnt change :D

  • I am 19 years old. Currently in the hopsital as I type this. This surgery is covered by insurance as long as it is a "detterrent to your health." Only an oral surgeon can determind this.

  • Hey Im probably going to also have the surgery I was just wondering how old you are and how you are going to be able to afford it b/c I heard that insurance does not cover it
