Whether you are perceived as a hero does not depend on how "mentally deficient" the person/animal one takes care of is, but how much (thankless) work it takes and how difficult it is to give them a good life. One would not be a hero if they treated retarded children like dogs. Also people buy dogs for their own enjoyment, no one prefers to have a retarded child.
