  • shoulda made the video 1 second longer....

  • Blows the other opening away.

  • I think I like the other song (The Killing Moon by Echo and the Bunnymen) more , I just think it fits better. It's probably just because im used to the other one god i love this movie!

  • I finally noticed that donnie's mother is reading a stephen king novel, IT.

  • @KodamaofNorthtree What's more, Donnie's dad reads Tommyknockers in the bed, but a crew member stole its cover, so you can't notice the title. Kelly is a big fan of the Horror Master (I like his books too, especially Misery).

  • anyone notice how you can hear thunderstorms when there's not a single cloud on the sky? and how this later ties into the poem Donnie reads in poetry class?

  • Amazing intro! Amazing song!

  • everytime i hear the first note of the piano, i get shivers. the best film ever made.

  • That girl, man. SUCH a fuckass.

  • @johnanth whats a fuckass?

  • Damn, I wanted the Intro with "The killing moon"

  • 2:26 You're welcome

  • pedazo de peli y un temon que mas se puede pedir, Donnie Darko y Never Tear Us Apart.

  • Fit pretty well.

  • Whether you like the movie, song, director etc or not. In my opinion it's just a beautiful scene. Pick your own meaning for it but make sure it's just something beautiful.

  • Did anybody else noticed it said "Pandora: a gaylord films company"

  • Love both versions. It's probably been previously stated numerous times, but at the line "Two worlds collided", Frank drives past Donnie...

  • i prefer killing moon...100,000 times better!!!

  • Understand it: this song was originally planed to be used, but Kelly could not pay to use it. I think the the intro was even cut for Never tear us apart. My only problem with this version of the movie is that it's easier to understand it, because they explain many things about time travel and tangent universe. Back in the day I had to watch the normal version twice to understand it. Shame that the other Kelly movies aren't good as DD, but The Box was OK imho.

  • @HUNspike have you seen memento??! or vanilla sky??! i'll admit that the latter is more like marmite in that you either love it or you hate it but they are both inception/donnie darko-esque movies and i would highly suggest that you watch them as you appear to have enjyed this so much :D:D:D

  • @Edot94 I'm very curious about Memento, I will definitely watch it, alongside with Vanilla Sky. I watched Inception at the movies, it's a good film, but a little bit overrated. Though it's topic about dreams is interesting, especially if you have heard about lucid dreams.

  • @HUNspike or have lucid dreams

  • @HUNspike well I would really like to hear about lucid dreams. What are they?

  • @liviscrazy Lucid dreaming is an ability to "wake up" while dreaming, and to controll it after. I have books about it, but havent got the patience to learn it.

  • @HUNspike wow how interesting

but ofcoure, I find anything that has to do with our subconcious interesting, thanks!

  • This version completely lacks the punch of Killing Moon. I'm beginning to think that Richard Kelly's success with the original cut of Donnie Darko will never be repeated. How he could have thought he was improving the film by changing the song to Never Tear Us Apart is completely beyond me.

  • @TomHoole I feel the exact and same way, Tom. And I'm sure a lot of people do. I was simply appalled when I saw the director's cut. I loved the intro with killing moon, and was shocked beyond words to hear that perfect song being replaced.

  • they completely ruined the intro, killing moon was PERFECT already!

  • Every sunday morning, I awake exactly the same way donnie does here.

  • this blows. killing moon is too awesome to cut out.

  • Killing Moon is one of the most badass movie intros ever. This draaaaaaagssss

  • wtf this is terrible IT NEEDS THE KILLING MOON how kelly take it out

  • i think this was filmed in california, wherever it was i must go there before i die and bike down that road

  • not bad

  • Incipit with "Killing Moon" = a great emotion that takes my breath away ;-\.

  • I think Killing Moon fit better...

    just sayin.

  • Much prefer the original intro. That song just brings the film alive. This song, although reflecting the plot better, just bores me.

  • INXS fits so much better with the intro!

  • very different mood to the original song

  • killing moon

  • killing moon

  • Anyone know other types of similar movie?

  • @MrTruthSeeka If you want to watch similar intelligent movies, try "Revolver" and "Stalker"

  • @HUNspike NOT REVOLVER!

  • @roloug95 Don't care. Granted, it has flaws, but Revolver is a freakin great movie, especially that monologue from Statham.

  • @MrTruthSeeka Southland Tales. Same quantum physics/ parellel universe ideas. Way different story tho. Those two movies go hand in hand.

  • @TruthFamineFloater Jesus Christ, how I hate that movie. You can't basically understand most of it without the prequel comic series.

  • @MrTruthSeeka there's no similiar movie for Donie Darko I think but if you liked it, try Mr. Nobody. I love them both.

  • yeah, this suits the movie great...the lyrics and all. but the feeling i get with the killing moon is best. There's something about the killing moon that makes it as if it was made for donnie darko...but well..that's just me.

  • "I told you that we could fly, because we all have wings, but some of us don't know why."

  • ultimate intro and song pick...

  • Glad I got both versions. Love to watch the director's cut, but I just prefer Killing Moon at the beginning. Seems more fitting.

  • @locke89 true but if you look and listen closely, donnie is passing the red car when the lyrics "two worlds colliding" comes up.....coincidence?

  • @sillybstrd027 and did you notice that with killing moon...it says ''killing time'' when the red car passes...? aaah...coincidence too?

  • @guitarfreak607 are you serious donnie darko is a fucking masterpiece just like a lot of other richard kelly movies such as southland tales. that movie seriously kicks ass from start to finish and if you think that DD's popularity is luck, then you must be outta your god damn mind.

  • Shame that my english sucks, I can't join this debate.

  • @guitarfreak607 - the INXS tune is figuratively and literally right on for the beginning of this movie. It's a love story and a story about what are essentially two different worlds.

  • I dunno if you guys would've noticed, but the piano music played at the beginning is transposed down a tone in the directors cut as well which i personally also prefer. Its more pleasant, less harsh. To me, what makes this scene so great is the opening sequence, the visuals and piano music just balance so perfectly. I find that the change in song has very little importance because him riding home is far less significant than the symbolic importance of the place where he awakes

  • Alright, this song makes no fucking sense. On the soundtrack this song stands out because it has nothing to do with the film. it's feel just doesnt match with what's happening.

The ambiguity of donnie's awakening on the pavement is matched perfectly with the mysterious off-set sound of 'the killing moon'.

Fuck you richard kelly. I think something supernatural was happening when he wrote the script that made it brilliant by accident, because he seriously got lucky with donnie darko.

  • @guitarfreak607 Dude, it's just a movie.

  • @HUNspike I second that

  • @guitarfreak607 How does this make no sense or have nothing to do with the film? Just in the lyrics "two worlds collide" alone, is more than enough to draw a parallel between the song and the tangent universe forming. Also, the whole theme of "never tear us apart" and the predetermined destiny of Donnie despite his actions seems to be pretty clear. So why don't you just calm the fuck down and stop bashing on people because you think your opinion actually matters to anyone.

  • @pratera08

sorry you care so much as what I think. and whether you like it or not, my comment remains.

"because you think your opinion actually matters to anyone"

It mattered enough for you to reply. :)

peace, dude. I don't dig comment battles

  • @guitarfreak607 too bad i do and wat you just said was completely cotradictory xD

  • @guitarfreak607 ....you obviously cant get over how smart you are

  • @guitarfreak607 i feel like it has to domore with the "sound" of the song.

that kind of melancholy. the 80's

and the same place that Donnie and Gretchen shared later.

"and they can't never, tear us apart"

  • @lostinstgo2

Now that you mention that.... It's just hard to appreciate the directors cut when you're so used to the original song and atmosphere. xD

  • @guitarfreak607

The song does make sense when you give it enough thought. It introduces us to the family and neighbour hood life. It sets the scene of a perfect, normal happy family.

The song’s general feel contrasts with the film scene and this creates a feel of uncertainty, an example of juxtaposition (two contrasting elements), which basically ties it's self into the movie, as the whole movie was confusing and had a feel of uncertainty to what was to happen till the very end.

  • @guitarfreak607 i do understand where you are comimg from with this. i think the main reason this song was used it because of the "two worlds colliding" referance. i also think it a bit more engaging than the song used in the original release.

  • @guitarfreak607 So you love the movie but hate the director for making a good movie and you're saying he sucks because he wrote the script for a good movie that you liked. Are you mentally ill?

  • @guitarfreak607 i think never tear us apart works really well because the lyrics go with the plot of the movie, the lyrics show just how much donnie cares about everyone in his life, even though he is being torn apart from them he is saving them, and the line "i told you that we could fly, cause we all have wings, but some of don't know why" shows how much of a hero he actually is

  • @guitarfreak607 Donnie Darko was originally directed with the song in mind for the intro but because of budget problems legal reason fuck if I know, it had to be taken out.

but since the beginning it was always in there, do you want to know what is really random? The song he used in the first theatrical version because that song has/had nothing to do with how Richard Kelly intended the intro to be in the first fucking place, don't talk about shit youhave no clue on.

  • @blahmehblah1 I ALSO HAVE A PARTING MESSAGE FOR ANYONE WHO DOES NOT LIKE THE DIRECTORS CUT, it isn't your movie so you have no right to feel insulted that it was remastered and or re-cut by the original creator

and you have no room to complain because the original will always be on the shelves for you to buy if you just so please, so stop being pricks, assholes.

  • @guitarfreak607 I felt the exact same way when I heard the INXS song. I thought "Under a Killing Moon" set up the story much more effectively, and totally conveyed this whole dark, mysterious place the movie seems to be set in. However, I think this song I fits too. In a more positive sense, I think it sets up and highlights the relationship between Donnie and Gretchen. So both songs work...I just agree with you, and think Under a Killing moon works WAY better.

  • @guitarfreak607 don't get me wrong the original song was good but i just think this song is just way better for one of the most amazing movies i have ever seen. fuck avatar its all about donnie

  • @guitarfreak607 I disagree. This was the first version I saw and it absolutely blew my mind. I saw The Killing Moon version after and it didn't nearly match this for me. This version matches better with the dreamlike quality it is trying to create, to convey the sort of optimistic glossed over 80s.

  • @guitarfreak607

the song pertains to what should have happened the next night what happens later in the movie

"don't ask me, what you know is true" something is amiss, hes going to DIE the next day

"2 worlds colliding" its a paradox meaning there are 2 different worlds and he somehow is saved by Frank in one but he goes back in time and dies

" never tear us apart" his girlfriend who he dies for, he wishes that he didnt have to but hed rather have her live

if you knew anything of the plot, RETARD

  • this song works so much better than the original. from the timing of all the cuts to the lyrics synching with the certain parts of the scenes

  • @BreezyFilm i agree completely i have the blu ray and it has both versions i put on the first disc and i was like wtf than i realized the second disk was the directors cut and than i was like yay xDD

  • I prefer this intro to the original

  • INXS - tear ous apart awsome song

  • this movie is thew best when is s. darko comin out?

  • It is set to be released July 10, 2009.

  • @EnjoiSk8tin i herd it wicked sucks and might completely ruin the first movie just bc the second sucks so much balls. but if youve seen it let me know how it was

  • @LimbStrong93 It's not that big tragedy... S. Darko has a good OST and some good scenes, but it's far from DD of course.

  • @HUNspike id have to agree with you it just seemed like they where overdoing it

but pulling off another Donnie darko would be a miracle ^^

ps have you seen Southland tales its quite interesting

  • @LimbStrong93 yeah it sucks ass

  • @LimbStrong93 S. darko isn't that bad but if you directly compare it to donnie it is sorta shitty, but i think the worst part of that movie is the soundtrack it sucks really bad compared to donnie

  • @LimbStrong93 I find S. Darko answered a lot of questions about the first movie but it still somehow ruined the story for me. Not the most exciting movie but good nonetheless.

  • No impact at all...

Why did Kelly change the song?

  • Beacuse he wanted to use the INXS song originally.

  • The original is had a way better song, at least I got the original :)

  • i like this one better

  • i prefer echo version better. i think this doesnt go with the movie at all. that is cool tho how frank's car passes donnie as they say two worlds collided...very interesting

  • ...and in the original intro the song lyrics are "its killing time" as he passes franks car, what a coincidence

  • I noticed the 2 worlds collided part, but this "killing time" sounds interesting, too.

  • enorme

  • Both versions work fine although I love the INXS tune just a tiny bit more than The Killing Moon. But we all have our preferences.

Funny how when Michael Hutchence sings the words 'two worlds collided' we see Donnie and Frank's red car passing each other. Hmmmm... maybe I read too much into things, lol.

    What an unusual movie.

  • I think that the director's cut of the film was terrible. I think it tries to make the story simpler and easier to digest, when the terrific thing about the original cut is that it was difficult.

  • Both are equally good.

  • i wish i could time travel

  • Nope, Killing Moon is better! Absolutely LOVE Echo.

  • suites the movie so gud /////AUSSIE INXS////

  • the best cut of the movie. i cant stand the other soundtrack, its just awful.

  • I Agree 100%,
