Vinnie is Vinnie, Buddy is Buddy, Gadd is Gadd, Cobham is Cobham etc... All of them have different, however unique styles to approach the same piece of music. That's why we love them and we are here to discuss about them. If some guys think that Vinnie goes over the top some times this is because he is so amazing when he does it. I personally believe he has the feeling of the music he plays and his versatility is exceptional. Just listen to his work with Sting and you'll see what I mean.
Yeah, the pseudo-intellectual drummers on here are crazy. It's an improvisational situation, and he's interacting at a level that 's on par with the soloist. I've never heard Vinnie play anything that didn't work, or have a ton of stank on it. He's the best blend of versatility, virtuosity and balls you'll ever hear. Who else has played with Chick Corea AND Megadeth?!
LOL....so true. He can do ANYTHING, and do it perfectly. The most intuitive drummer I have ever heard....his sense of time is so far ahead of anyone else.
Why does everyone think he "stretched time" or dropped a quarter note around 3:59? I definitely can tap my foot steadily through all of that with it resolving on 1, like it should. No "mistake" there.
I DO, though, think that some of this playing is a little too over the top for this music, and to me, this just doesn't groove the way it would if a Purdie or Katche or Gadd were playing it. I think Vinnie's amazing... among the best ever... a prodigy... but he has never been a "feel" drummer.
I wouldn't say he's "never" been a feel drummer, but I do understand totally what you mean. It's a shame when some of the greats go a little overboard. It kind of leaves a sour taste in your mouth, especially when these are people that so many, myself included, aspire to be everything like.
Same with Virgil Donati. I don't particularly like the stuff that most like from him, but when he lays down a groove, it's just so wonderfully solid. Almost nothing quite like it! Check out Tina Arena...
i think what's not being taken into consideration is that it seemed planned that he play out in a more spectacular approach than normal. Notice how the band settled back into the motif he stayed in the groove
@scottp118 You're right. He doesn't drop a note. With regards to him being over the top on this, I think it's because he's quite loud in the overall mix. If that were less so, it wouldn't be so noticeable. Great show all the same I think.
I talkes to Mark Stephens when he was playing with another band in a club here in LA. He said this was just a concert put together to make this recording. The guys met and worked together playing this gig for a week before recording this night.
The piano player is Mark Stephens. He has played with Chaka on and off for a couple of decades. This concert is just more of a jazz setting rather than the usual funk Chaka does.
does this band go under a particular name or are they all just doing as session musicians? i would love to hear some more stuff like this, and having vinnie colaiuta in it is a bonus. if not any other smooth jazz artists of note? im kinda stuck on coltrane and thats not very smooth xD
vinnie isnt the best drummer in the world, he is the joint best drummer in the world with like 10-15 other people. but he is awesome. i dont get how you could not love this
instead of being a critic, why not just appreciate the amazing musicianship displayed by all of the guys on stage. i think its safe to assume no one commenting on this board, is half as seasoned, proficient and accomplished as them. And, Vinnie Colaiuta is the fucking shit, he took drumming in a completely different direction. People study HIS grooves.definitely no need to make your judgments public.
I am trying to find those that I do like. Sometimes we have to wade through the bad to find some good ones. I haven't really listened to Vinnie in a while and I thought I would try to find out what he is doing lately and I find people think he is the best drummer in the world, and it bothers me because I don't think he is. I iike some of his work, but I think he, based on what I've seen lately, is overplaying. I think i have my rights to voice my opinion, because I feel my are valid.
I hear what you're saying. I love Zappa and a lot of the albums that Vinnie has played on, such as Sting's "Summner's Tales".... but I don't love Vinnie's playing all the time. I often find it's not what I'd like to hear, although I am always amazed at his ability.
Ability, or technique is separate from discretion and taste.
Some folks get offended because they collate those phenomenon rather than approach them as distinct elements that make up the whole musician.
Personally, I like the 70's Zappa material like Apostraphe, One Size Fits All era.. Summoner's Tales is a great album, but Nothing Like the Sun is, I feel, a better album all around.
There are some albums Vinnie is great on, but some stuff just feels a little stiff and sterile to me. I would really like to hear him tune his drums up to get a more melodic jazz tuning. But that is just my preference.
Yeah, I like Manu, He has done a lot of exceptional work with Gabriel as well.... He doesn't get the recognition he deserves. He was getting some play a while back, but I think since he went more into traditional jazz, the industry hasn't promoted him as much since he doing as much on the major concert tours.
I guess it's a whole, "who are playing with lately thing."
I agree whole heartedly. I've been practicing playing the drumms since I was 5. My father is Corky Collins. I think Vinnie is a little before and after his time. I prefered Chad Wackerman as Zappas drummer, but it was all genious reguardless. It's nice to hear some real musicians adding a little flavour to the mix these days. I appreciate the realism
Actually what Vinnie is doing is kind of bugging me. he should be spending more time swinging the groove and playing WITH the melody line, which he isn't really doing enough. Just my opinion.
You are trying to make people think that I or others are making a fallacious argument when one is making an opinion. Which is twisting one's words around to suit your own ego. For some reason, if someone disagrees with your opinion on how good you thing someone is, then they are wrong. Well, people have various opinions and come from various levels of experience, knowledge, etc. to make an informed decision. Yeah, i guess you're right, it is a waste of time responding to your comments.
The sound isn't together with the picture, it's funny everyone is talkin' about timing and mistakes and nobody noticed that the sound is far behind the picture!

He didn't drop a quarter note...he did stretch the time and played dotted quarter notes between the snare and crash/ride, which if you listen to his solos and fills he does quite often
Geez, Vinnie makes mistakes too, in this case he picked it up quickly and moved on. I don't know if you guys know this, but professional musicians (even virtuosos) make mistakes. Get over it.
Gotta love the Ken Smith 7 string bass. I can't remember the guys name, but I remember when he first came out with it, I played one a few months later, ridiculous instrument.
Muzak, yes. Great playing, yes. Vinnie is awesome, as always. And I would dare to question the 3:59 - is someone really dropping... Well, would be nice if Vinnie did drop, anyway, he's totally in it before and after. Either he didn't drop, instead just played an accent there, or he dropped and recovered really fast.
Either way, we all make mistakes (even Vinnie) but what makes those guys better than the majority, is ,for one, their ability to recover.
YO VINNIE IS SO NUTS EVEN WHEN HES CHILLIN OUT HIS GROOVE IS INSANE BCUZ U STARt 2 thiNk ABoUT what hes so capable of doinG...PLEASE ADD MORE VINNIE!!!!!!!!!!
digging yourself a serious hole here dude. it's a flugelhorn. anyway, it's not usual that u see the vin man drop a full quarter note like he does at 3:59, but hey, who's counting?@(*#&$^
sorry to ruin the moment, but he didn't lose the groove...he played dotted crotchets between the snare and cymbal, so strectching the time to play two notes in the space of three normal crotchets...he does this quite often in solos/fills etc...it is one of his trademarks
crotchets? Sixteenths? Thirty Seconds? I have never heard of a Crotchet? he's playing a half time shuffle with dotted eigths is that what you mean? weird term...
IMO Colaiuta is the greatest overall drummer alive but "at 3:59 he stretched the time" is one way of looking at it. Another way was he actually got into a fill and didn't complete it right. First time I've ever heard him actually mess up. He's probably got the best understanding of polyrhythms and time of any drummer today. This concert was in 2000. They played together for a week at the Bottom Line and recorded the last night for a Jazz CD with Chaka. The whole CD is great.
You know, he is capable of mistakes. I'm not sure if you knew that. He may have recovered it well enough to pass it off as that, but he, like all other session musicians (myself included) does make mistakes.
I love the multiangle DVDs with the closeups on the instruments you can get, I notice all sorts of tiny mistakes by players. I realise that I'm actually pretty accurate for a piano player.
Yes i know he can make mistakes, i never said he that he can't! (??) But that "fill" is not out of time, even if he had to recover it from a near mistake.
I understand that top players are able to make mistakes, i have also seen it like you
OH!! a quarter note!! from Old French crochet, meaning 'little hook'. I love google!! Old school/classical term!! educational, very good...
the other thing to realize too is that these guys have all been fired from sessions before, or they have not been hired because someone else had more appropriate playing styles etc.. they screw up..That's why I like the guys who can nail the slow tempos as well because if you can play slow with less noodling, you aren't covering up or distracting....
Now I know Quavers!! I should have known from reading before about Demiquavers, semiquavers, classical terms for 16th,8ths right? anyway...I agree about the fill comment too, he is just shuffling and imposing polyrythmic subdivisions like 3's over 2's and playing over the bar line as well, carrying the phrase. For a live performance the idea that he would even try it is genius, but when you get in the zone like Vinnie does and have the confidence that you just won't screw up, you can pull it off.
wow..... haha sorry about that i just caught myself being a retard. I thought he was a priest because of the angle the camera was at it looked like he had a white square on the top of his collar. damn i'm stupid.
this is some of the best Vinnie I have ever heard ..... goddamn ... love his chops and they are ridiculous but this is some sleezy groove going on
