  • this is some of the best Vinnie I have ever heard ..... goddamn ... love his chops and they are ridiculous but this is some sleezy groove going on

  • band and song name? anyone know?

  • Vinnie's whack with the left hand, traditional grip is like no other. The power he gets is sometimes unbelieveable.

  • Stop comparing drummers and appreciate the art in front of you right now.

  • @twelge15 - I wish all my 'rare mistakes' were that good (O: He doesn't lose a thing; in the pocket the whole way through...

  • I have this dvd..its great but way too short...but then any show with vinnie playing is always not long enuff for me lol

  • A very rare mistake by Vinnie at 3:59.5. Goes allittle too long with a tom roll. Oh well. I guess he's really human.

  • @twelge15

    Hi.

He:s just playing over the bar.

back in on the 1 no trouble.

    Cheers

  • @twelge15

If you thought that was a mistake you should check out some of his clinics on my channel. You'll see what he's capable of.

  • Im here to discuss Vinnie. Im not here for the same tired debate on peoples opinions. If someone doesnt like Vinnie, I dont give a shit, I still do!

  • his 16" floor sounds like a cardboard box.

    cool shit

  • Is this just a live perfomance or is the promotion for a new album??

  • if i'm to search for the song, what band or album should i search for?

  • The drum fill at 3:43 is just soooo tasty it hurts!

  • This video would be much more impressive if it was in sync with the audio.

  • Vinnie is Vinnie, Buddy is Buddy, Gadd is Gadd, Cobham is Cobham etc... All of them have different, however unique styles to approach the same piece of music. That's why we love them and we are here to discuss about them. If some guys think that Vinnie goes over the top some times this is because he is so amazing when he does it. I personally believe he has the feeling of the music he plays and his versatility is exceptional. Just listen to his work with Sting and you'll see what I mean.

  • No doubt, In my humble opinion, Vinnie is the best living drummer out there right now.

  • @freakbandkostas This is the best comment I've read since one of my own....you know yur stuff.

  • IN my opinion Vinnie is doing exactly what a drummer should be doing in any sort of jazz or jazz-ish situation.

  • Yeah, the pseudo-intellectual drummers on here are crazy. It's an improvisational situation, and he's interacting at a level that 's on par with the soloist. I've never heard Vinnie play anything that didn't work, or have a ton of stank on it. He's the best blend of versatility, virtuosity and balls you'll ever hear. Who else has played with Chick Corea AND Megadeth?!

  • YEAH MAN! When I found out he played on a Megadeth record I was like o_O wow amazing. He can literally play ANYTHING!

  • LOL....so true. He can do ANYTHING, and do it perfectly. The most intuitive drummer I have ever heard....his sense of time is so far ahead of anyone else.

  • @4limbs

Me! And I have a pathological liar's license here to prove it!

  • @4limbs megadeth ?..seriously ? lol !! only vinnie !

  • @4limbs Amen dude ! ! !

  • Why does everyone think he "stretched time" or dropped a quarter note around 3:59? I definitely can tap my foot steadily through all of that with it resolving on 1, like it should. No "mistake" there.

I DO, though, think that some of this playing is a little too over the top for this music, and to me, this just doesn't groove the way it would if a Purdie or Katche or Gadd were playing it. I think Vinnie's amazing... among the best ever... a prodigy... but he has never been a "feel" drummer.

  • I wouldn't say he's "never" been a feel drummer, but I do understand totally what you mean. It's a shame when some of the greats go a little overboard. It kind of leaves a sour taste in your mouth, especially when these are people that so many, myself included, aspire to be everything like.

Same with Virgil Donati. I don't particularly like the stuff that most like from him, but when he lays down a groove, it's just so wonderfully solid. Almost nothing quite like it! Check out Tina Arena...

  • i think what's not being taken into consideration is that it seemed planned that he play out in a more spectacular approach than normal. Notice how the band settled back into the motif he stayed in the groove

  • soz man, but for some reason i just can't see gadd in this scenario better than vinnie.

  • @scottp118 You're right. He doesn't drop a note. With regards to him being over the top on this, I think it's because he's quite loud in the overall mix. If that were less so, it wouldn't be so noticeable. Great show all the same I think.

  • What the hell ever happened to vinnie?

  • I talkes to Mark Stephens when he was playing with another band in a club here in LA. He said this was just a concert put together to make this recording. The guys met and worked together playing this gig for a week before recording this night.

  • Hey Stretch - Can you help me out here.... Who is this quartet & what the name of the album it comes from or at least the song name? Thanks!

  • brittdrummer- this video is from a DVD recorded at the BET television studio in 2000 I think.

    Melvin Davis- Bass

    Mark Stephens- Pianos

    Andy Weiner-Flugelhorn& Synths

    Vinnie Colaiuta-Drums

  • Fuck all the intellectuality - this tune grooves period - who is the piano player? Great solo

  • The piano player is Mark Stephens. He has played with Chaka on and off for a couple of decades. This concert is just more of a jazz setting rather than the usual funk Chaka does.

  • Grandissima Classe del grandissimo MITO...... :-))

  • Lovely sounds going here :)

  • does this band go under a particular name or are they all just doing as session musicians? i would love to hear some more stuff like this, and having vinnie colaiuta in it is a bonus. if not any other smooth jazz artists of note? im kinda stuck on coltrane and thats not very smooth xD

  • vinnie isnt the best drummer in the world, he is the joint best drummer in the world with like 10-15 other people. but he is awesome. i dont get how you could not love this

  • i love vinnie's groove

  • instead of being a critic, why not just appreciate the amazing musicianship displayed by all of the guys on stage. i think its safe to assume no one commenting on this board, is half as seasoned, proficient and accomplished as them. And, Vinnie Colaiuta is the fucking shit, he took drumming in a completely different direction. People study HIS grooves.definitely no need to make your judgments public.

  • Why not? He isn't swinging the song enough. It's just as valid of an opinion as someone saying that Vinnie IS grooving.

I guess that's what happens when you play SMOOOOOOOTH JAZZ.

  • dude how come you watch so many of Vinnie's videos even tho you don't seem to like them

  • I am trying to find those that I do like. Sometimes we have to wade through the bad to find some good ones. I haven't really listened to Vinnie in a while and I thought I would try to find out what he is doing lately and I find people think he is the best drummer in the world, and it bothers me because I don't think he is. I iike some of his work, but I think he, based on what I've seen lately, is overplaying. I think i have my rights to voice my opinion, because I feel my are valid.

  • I hear what you're saying. I love Zappa and a lot of the albums that Vinnie has played on, such as Sting's "Summner's Tales".... but I don't love Vinnie's playing all the time. I often find it's not what I'd like to hear, although I am always amazed at his ability.

Ability, or technique is separate from discretion and taste.

Some folks get offended because they collate those phenomenon rather than approach them as distinct elements that make up the whole musician.

  • Personally, I like the 70's Zappa material like Apostraphe, One Size Fits All era.. Summoner's Tales is a great album, but Nothing Like the Sun is, I feel, a better album all around.

There are some albums Vinnie is great on, but some stuff just feels a little stiff and sterile to me. I would really like to hear him tune his drums up to get a more melodic jazz tuning. But that is just my preference.

  • Oh yeah, I love Apostrophe. It's the first Zappa I ever heard. Blew my mind.

I do prefer Manu Katche to Vinnie. It's a style thing, not a chops thing.

I hear you on the tuning also. I'm a fan of the Bill Bruford style tuning from his 80's time period. Open and resonant. Ambassador heads.

  • Yeah, I like Manu, He has done a lot of exceptional work with Gabriel as well.... He doesn't get the recognition he deserves. He was getting some play a while back, but I think since he went more into traditional jazz, the industry hasn't promoted him as much since he doing as much on the major concert tours.

I guess it's a whole, "who are playing with lately thing."

  • I agree whole heartedly. I've been practicing playing the drumms since I was 5. My father is Corky Collins. I think Vinnie is a little before and after his time. I prefered Chad Wackerman as Zappas drummer, but it was all genious reguardless. It's nice to hear some real musicians adding a little flavour to the mix these days. I appreciate the realism

  • Actually what Vinnie is doing is kind of bugging me. he should be spending more time swinging the groove and playing WITH the melody line, which he isn't really doing enough. Just my opinion.

  • You think you can sanction a fallacious argument just by saying "just my opinion"?

  • First off it isn't a fallacious argument, it is MY OPINION. Stop twisting words around to serve your own needs.

What Vinnie is doing isn't working for me and that is MY opinion.

  • Why even respond to my comment?

    How am I twisting words?

    What needs?

  • You are trying to make people think that I or others are making a fallacious argument when one is making an opinion. Which is twisting one's words around to suit your own ego. For some reason, if someone disagrees with your opinion on how good you thing someone is, then they are wrong. Well, people have various opinions and come from various levels of experience, knowledge, etc. to make an informed decision. Yeah, i guess you're right, it is a waste of time responding to your comments.

  • I just asked a question.

    Sorry about your pants.

  • And if you don't think replying to his comments has a point why do it

  • audience looking a bit tired lol..

  • Even with good players, elevator music can still be numbing.

  • SWEET !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The sound isn't together with the picture, it's funny everyone is talkin' about timing and mistakes and nobody noticed that the sound is far behind the picture!

  • No I did too...pretty bad..the compression of video versus a different sampling rate for the audio, or crappy compression...but the song is coooooollllllll!!!!

  • vinnie is amazing. he can adapt to any musical situation. perfect balance of time keeping and musical interaction with the soloist. even more incredible considering what this kind of music calls for. but it's still vinnie, still incredible.

  • He didn't drop a quarter note...he did stretch the time and played dotted quarter notes between the snare and crash/ride, which if you listen to his solos and fills he does quite often

  • VINNIe VINNNIE VINNNE !!!!!!!!!! ROCK ON ROCK ON

  • Geez, Vinnie makes mistakes too, in this case he picked it up quickly and moved on. I don't know if you guys know this, but professional musicians (even virtuosos) make mistakes. Get over it.

Gotta love the Ken Smith 7 string bass. I can't remember the guys name, but I remember when he first came out with it, I played one a few months later, ridiculous instrument.

  • Melvin Davis is the name of the baseplayer!:)

  • Yes, that's it. Crazy mother, isn't he? I hate anything with more than 5.

  • Muzak, yes. Great playing, yes. Vinnie is awesome, as always. And I would dare to question the 3:59 - is someone really dropping... Well, would be nice if Vinnie did drop, anyway, he's totally in it before and after. Either he didn't drop, instead just played an accent there, or he dropped and recovered really fast.

Either way, we all make mistakes (even Vinnie) but what makes those guys better than the majority, is ,for one, their ability to recover.

  • good point, but im sorry to say vinnie didn't drop!lol He played dotted crotchets between the snare and cymbal...so he still is perfect!lol

  • oh so you spend your life learning an instrument and you end up playing muzak for porn.

  • YO VINNIE IS SO NUTS EVEN WHEN HES CHILLIN OUT HIS GROOVE IS INSANE BCUZ U STARt 2 thiNk ABoUT what hes so capable of doinG...PLEASE ADD MORE VINNIE!!!!!!!!!!

  • digging yourself a serious hole here dude. it's a flugelhorn. anyway, it's not usual that u see the vin man drop a full quarter note like he does at 3:59, but hey, who's counting?@(*#&$^

and what video is this from?

    please.

  • Listen, Vinnie's always counting. Never forget that.

At 3:59 he stretched the time - when you're a virtuoso stretching a quarter note becomes second nature.

    It's Chaka Kahn Live. I think 1993

  • he totally lost the groove at 3:49 but hey nobody's perfect, not even vinnie...but almost!

  • sorry to ruin the moment, but he didn't lose the groove...he played dotted crotchets between the snare and cymbal, so strectching the time to play two notes in the space of three normal crotchets...he does this quite often in solos/fills etc...it is one of his trademarks

  • crotchets? Sixteenths? Thirty Seconds? I have never heard of a Crotchet? he's playing a half time shuffle with dotted eigths is that what you mean? weird term...

  • IMO Colaiuta is the greatest overall drummer alive but "at 3:59 he stretched the time" is one way of looking at it. Another way was he actually got into a fill and didn't complete it right. First time I've ever heard him actually mess up. He's probably got the best understanding of polyrhythms and time of any drummer today. This concert was in 2000. They played together for a week at the Bottom Line and recorded the last night for a Jazz CD with Chaka. The whole CD is great.

  • he didn't drop, he played dotted 8ths or quavers

  • You know, he is capable of mistakes. I'm not sure if you knew that. He may have recovered it well enough to pass it off as that, but he, like all other session musicians (myself included) does make mistakes.

I love the multiangle DVDs with the closeups on the instruments you can get, I notice all sorts of tiny mistakes by players. I realise that I'm actually pretty accurate for a piano player.

  • Yes i know he can make mistakes, i never said he that he can't! (??) But that "fill" is not out of time, even if he had to recover it from a near mistake.

I understand that top players are able to make mistakes, i have also seen it like you

  • OH!! a quarter note!! from Old French crochet, meaning 'little hook'. I love google!! Old school/classical term!! educational, very good...

the other thing to realize too is that these guys have all been fired from sessions before, or they have not been hired because someone else had more appropriate playing styles etc.. they screw up..That's why I like the guys who can nail the slow tempos as well because if you can play slow with less noodling, you aren't covering up or distracting....

  • Yeh gud point, it is always harder to play things at 20 bpm opposed to 120bpm.

You've never heard of a crotchet?! It is nothing specialised, it is standard music terminology, anyway thanks for calling me educated!!ha ha

  • Now I know Quavers!! I should have known from reading before about Demiquavers, semiquavers, classical terms for 16th,8ths right? anyway...I agree about the fill comment too, he is just shuffling and imposing polyrythmic subdivisions like 3's over 2's and playing over the bar line as well, carrying the phrase. For a live performance the idea that he would even try it is genius, but when you get in the zone like Vinnie does and have the confidence that you just won't screw up, you can pull it off.

  • You're right on the idea, but he definitely flubbed the fill a little.

  • yeah, but we'll forgive him just this once!!:)

  • Agreed.

  • wow..... haha sorry about that i just caught myself being a retard. I thought he was a priest because of the angle the camera was at it looked like he had a white square on the top of his collar. damn i'm stupid.

  • i don't think you're stupid because you thought it was a priest, i think you're stupid because you think that's a sax

  • holy shit is that a priest playing the sax?
