The problem with variable aspect wings st the weight and complexity of the swing mechanism. With modern engine tech its easier to build a plane with stall wings like the Eurofighter or the mirage and just fit it with big enough engines to keep it in the air.

The retiring of the tomcat was not due to it's poor performance, it's maintenance. The new Raptor and the F-35 programs were sucking all the defense budget out.
And there is yet another reason why F-14 isn't in service today. A more advanced fighter, F-18 Hornet and later Super Hornet, has been designed for the Navy. MiG-29 is clearly obsolete now and it never was a match for F-14.

F-14 has superior thrust and sustained turning capability, resulting in overall superior high-speed capability. At low speeds (like most USN fighters) it handles VERY well, and can pretty much handle Russian fighters where they excel. The only real advantage would be in the MiG-29's ability to snap the fighter to a break turn at very high AoA and engage with the Archer and HMD, which would result in a very large engagement arc. E. German MiGs creamed lot of NATO fighters with this.

AIM 54 could not easily hit MIG-29 from distance 'cause of MIG's more advanced countermesures. So, if we take two pilots, one in MIG-29 & one in F-14, both same capatibilities & both knowing what opponents fighter can do in combat, MIG-29 is the clear winner!

It's been proven that, when in the hands of capable pilots, the MiG-29 is superior to the F-16. The FAS says that the MiG-29 is a superior aircraft when compared to most fighters in the U.S. inventory. They were saying that before the Moldavia aqusition too btw, because the Germans gave you some to test and play with long before that purchase occured.
It's a matter of pilot quality, not aircraft quality.
The guy is right about the MiG-29's capability-the thing is that we haven't seen it face off against american aircraft in combat, hence the kill ratio. Iraqi-Yugoslavian pilots weren't of a high enough caliber to match American flyers.
When it's been tested(i.e, they use simulators or they put an American in the cockpit) it's been found that the jet is more than capable enough to match, say, F-16s(or outdo them).

And regarding the missiles being too slow, pay attantion. When the F-14 fired AMRAAMs and a Sidewinder at two of the MiGs, the relative velocity seemed correct. And for the micro missiles (which are an SF element btw), they where fired from pretty far appart. And short range missiles tend to slow down quickly.
You may also notice that the Tomcats were carrying six AIM-120 missiles, which was never part of the Tomcat's payload (although it was tested successfully)
Well that's believable too, considering that in the post-1999 alien ship crash timeline the Tomcats were never set to be retired. Makes sense that they would be fitted with Slammers eventually.

When I saw this part of Macross Zero, I was so amazed at how realistic and awesome the fight was, and Wagner's 'Flight of the Valkyries' was an awesome choice for the music for this AMV, because in japanese, the Variable Fighters that are flown in every Macross series are called "Valkyries."

Is it possible that both F-14 and Mig29 are designed to solved a very different problems? Comparing them is like comparing Ak47 and M16, it really depends on the situation.
Now, I'm no expert, but the F-14 is faster than the Mig-29. The Mig-29 is more maneuverable. If the F-14 pilots can force the Mig-29 into the vertical it can win. They both carry similar missiles and cannons, so I guess its the pilots who make the difference.
Poseidon500, give me some credit, the AIM54 missile was not designed to take out a target during evasive manouvers, it is a stand off weapon, it relies on its PASSIVE to ACTIVE radar mode to gain a surprise element on a target.
Unfortunately Maarcinos, you're right a flight of 14's would tear apart a mig formation given proper engagements, the AIM54 long range missile would be in the air long before the mig could react.

Historically, F4,14,15,16,18 have all downed migs with the only loss being a Mig-25 ambush of 1 F-18. With a kill record of over 200+ to 1, you could correctly state that not only the machines are better, but more importantly, the men are trained much better.

Quit making unsubstantiated claims about your experimental (non-production) craft outmaneuvering ANYTHING. What has it outmaneuvered? I have seen videos of both planes, and I don't see much difference in their abilities. The f-22 can tailslide, backflip, tailstand, etc. etc. and so can the Su-37. Which one is a better dogfighter only matters if the Sukhoi can get inside the stand-off weapons of the F-22, and FIND it in the first place.

F-14 has superior thrust and sustained turning capability, resulting in overall superior high-speed capability. At low speeds (like most USN fighters) it handles VERY well, and can pretty much handle Russian fighters where they excel. The only real advantage would be in the MiG-29's ability to snap the fighter to a break turn at very high AoA and engage with the Archer and HMD, which would result in a very large engagement arc. E. German MiGs creamed lot of NATO fighters with this.

Actually, F-14 would detect and destroy the MiGs before they can even spot Tomcats on radar. And by the way, F-14 isn't just a long range fighter, it's frame has been praised as probably the most agile one out there.

AIM 54 could not easily hit MIG-29 from distance 'cause of MIG's more advanced countermesures. So, if we take two pilots, one in MIG-29 & one in F-14, both same capatibilities & both knowing what opponents fighter can do in combat, MIG-29 is the clear winner!

Sorry to disappoint you, dude, but Aim-54C phoenix won't hit Mig-29. Only in case of pilot stupidity. It just not so maneuverable, it will lose it's target after some turns.

"In real dogfight"? Fulcrums are pieces of trash, just like any MiG in service. Even our oldest Tomcat (although retired) will trash the newest Fulcrums.
Remember: There are more MiGs killed by our fighters than the other way around.
And thanks to our Moldavian friends, we have those MiGs to study and play with, while Russians don't have any of ours to examine.

It's been proven that, when in the hands of capable pilots, the MiG-29 is superior to the F-16. The FAS says that the MiG-29 is a superior aircraft when compared to most fighters in the U.S. inventory. They were saying that before the Moldavia aqusition too btw, because the Germans gave you some to test and play with long before that purchase occured.

Uh, the Germans were routinely doing that in exercises.
As for superior avionics, the MiG 29 had a better avionics suite up until 2004 when the U.S. finally reverse engineered the tech found in the MiG 29.

It's a matter of pilot quality, not aircraft quality.
The guy is right about the MiG-29's capability-the thing is that we haven't seen it face off against american aircraft in combat, hence the kill ratio. Iraqi-Yugoslavian pilots weren't of a high enough caliber to match American flyers.
When it's been tested(i.e, they use simulators or they put an American in the cockpit) it's been found that the jet is more than capable enough to match, say, F-16s(or outdo them).

And regarding the missiles being too slow, pay attantion. When the F-14 fired AMRAAMs and a Sidewinder at two of the MiGs, the relative velocity seemed correct. And for the micro missiles (which are an SF element btw), they where fired from pretty far appart. And short range missiles tend to slow down quickly.

Well that's believable too, considering that in the post-1999 alien ship crash timeline the Tomcats were never set to be retired. Makes sense that they would be fitted with Slammers eventually.
Notice the aircrew masks too! Those certainly aren't part of any Life Support ensemble I'm aware of. Ironically, in the original 1985 series, not one person has their mask on, except for space flight. XD

But anyways, regarding the missiles, not sure about the AMRAAMs (could just be odd lighting), but the AIM-9Ms (pretty outdated for a Macross series) are colored correctly. And yes, the designers SHOULD have researched better, it makes no sense for an F-14 to be a weird hybrid of many A/B and D parts :p

All the ordnance still looks blue to me. Hybrid Cat theory is plausible, considering alien tech integration into conventional Earth Unification forces for the war effort.
Back on topic: Fulcrum is a piece of trash. RD engines still smoke after 15+ years of service. Over-reliant on GCI control. Etc...

When I saw this part of Macross Zero, I was so amazed at how realistic and awesome the fight was, and Wagner's 'Flight of the Valkyries' was an awesome choice for the music for this AMV, because in japanese, the Variable Fighters that are flown in every Macross series are called "Valkyries."

The Su-37 is not in production, because, they are upgrading his entire fleet of 340 Su-27 to su-27SMT, even when they said, that they will reduce his total inventory, Russia has increased his defence budget.

Transforming from fighter to robot is a standard Variable Fighter evasive move.
BTW, those VFs have superior thrust and Alpha than conventional fighters.

It was a perfectly believable scene when you realize that the last bandit was NOT a MiG. Our guy from the Earth Unification forces splashed all three enemy MiGs then gets ambushed by the VF.
VFs are extra tough and would've continued flying despite hits from the Cat.

Now, I'm no expert, but the F-14 is faster than the Mig-29. The Mig-29 is more maneuverable. If the F-14 pilots can force the Mig-29 into the vertical it can win. They both carry similar missiles and cannons, so I guess its the pilots who make the difference.

Poseidon500, give me some credit, the AIM54 missile was not designed to take out a target during evasive manouvers, it is a stand off weapon, it relies on its PASSIVE to ACTIVE radar mode to gain a surprise element on a target.

not really, Israeli pilots are have the best kill ratio and are arguably the most highly trained. also the USAF regularly fails to live up to expectations in combat, not so much a2a but in a2g there is a serious problem with regard to vehicle recognition

Last time I checked the Israelis trained the Israelis, the use american airframes with Israeli avionics and missiles... and as for outdated Migs and poorly trained adversaries, whats more theyve done this on three fronts simultaniously against numerically superior forces. When was the last time the USAF fought a highly trained well equiped oponent... I think youll find it was WWII.
FYI I'm an aero engineer and soon to be RAF officer... I know what I'm talking about, do you?

Pro Israeli no, I'm just aware of the history of the IAF, yes Israel is highly dependant on the US though they do not require american instructors, they train themselves and ALWAYS have, most early IAF pilots were WWII vets so they knew what they were doing, those vets trained more crews who then went on to form an airforce with more kills in the jet age than most other Air Arms combined.

In reality it is the man not the machine.
Historically, F4,14,15,16,18 have all downed migs with the only loss being a Mig-25 ambush of 1 F-18. With a kill record of over 200+ to 1, you could correctly state that not only the machines are better, but more importantly, the men are trained much better.

Quit making unsubstantiated claims about your experimental (non-production) craft outmaneuvering ANYTHING. What has it outmaneuvered? I have seen videos of both planes, and I don't see much difference in their abilities. The f-22 can tailslide, backflip, tailstand, etc. etc. and so can the Su-37. Which one is a better dogfighter only matters if the Sukhoi can get inside the stand-off weapons of the F-22, and FIND it in the first place.
