I remember this album coming out and I played it to death. Most of it was instrumental, and there was an honest effort to introduce African sounds within a western sensibility. At the age of fifteen, it was a really distinct project. Most of the kids in my year were buying up Duran Duran, so good on him for doing something which wasn't another commercial formula.
Although I like the police, I think all of Stewart Copeland's compositions are brilliant and totally original. As for lions charging a cage while he's inside, well... that's just lame.
around 3:52 of the video the interviewer (joan lundy i think is her name) really makes herself look stupid and does'nt really know how many members are in the police but stewart does correct her mistake soon after. media is so clueless. these big city types don't know what "everyday" people really like!!!
STEWART IS SELF-ABSORBED IN HIMSELF. HE'S A GREAT DRUMMER YET NOT SURE WAHT HE'S GIVING BACK OF SELFLESSNESS, HE HAS A HUGE EGO FOR SURE, AND I QUESTIAN HIS HEART AND MOTIVES. ASS HOLE, BUT HE'S HARD LIKE THAT I'M SURE. WILL HE EVER GROW UP?
That is too funny. He was playing the drums in a cage, while lions charged at him. That is both funny, and thought provoking. I firmly belive that he is by far; one if the worlds greatest drummers, however, rock musicians have a penchant for doing wierd stuff like that. I think I wil just continue listening to the music, enjoy his immense talent and forget about the lions and the cage thing. :)
pretty lame. what's the point? and that was a bunch of male lions which would means he wasn't in the middle of nowhere africa... and then you have camera shots from outside the fence - lol. drumming he's brilliant. real life he is a tard.
Stewart was in denial about The Police break up for so many yrs. Really sad. I was sad too for many yrs. Totally shocked when they toured a few yrs back and I was able to see a show.
Who is the dingbat interviewing Stewart? How did she get this gig? She keeps insinuating that he's mentally challenged for going to Africa and doing what he did. I would give my left testacle to go to Africa and serenade wild animals, and jam with the Watusi's and Masai. I'm happy Stewart got some television airtime because he's brilliant and deserves it. But couldn't they have gotten someone with a more comprehensive world view and someone more familiar with his work to do the interview??
Her name is Joan Lunden and this was on a show called Good Morning America which is still on. She seemed to do alot of interviews with rock stars for some reason.
Stewart has always been very outspoken, right or wrong and let's remember there were three people in that band not just one. I totally agree with obsidiansands1.
Actually, as three enthusiastic, confident and (yes) occasionally arrogant guys, Stewart, Andy & Sting were PERFECT as a band. It just wasn't gonna last for a lifetime. I find that humor, sarcasm and intelligence are often mistaken for arrogance and nastiness. I think a lot of people are afraid of skill and intelligence.
You make a very interesting point, and I think you are dead-on. Stewart Copeland, Andy Summers, and Gordon Sumner are each brilliant artists- each the very best and completely original in their approach to their craft- and have more than enough talent to have their own successful individual projects. Any time you have a band where this is the case, it's going to be very difficult and complicated to keep the group together. I believe the people who attack and deride these artists are jealous.
I wasn't the one who brought Kanye West up. I was just defending his artistic ability when someone else tried to trash it. I don't understand why some people have to put another artist down whenever they talk about artists they DO like. Kanye West isn't shit compared to anybody. Kanye West is a great artist. What a total tosser, shame the cage was there! Pygmies aren't timid, they are humble, a term that doesn't apply to him!
Just out of interest, his father was a CIA agent and his brother still is! Stewart Copelands connections via the band Police, involved in Live Aid, enabled his corrupt father to obtain a Live Aid flight to Africa. The purpose of the flight? To set up arms deals!!!
No wonder Stewart comes across as an arrogant creep!
It was reported in our media (UK) at the time. I am sure that the devious, arrogant, corrupt creep would have sued the ass of our media if it wasn't true!
Miles Copeland Snr was involved in far more serious political interference on a truly global scale. He was proud of it! The issue of him using a Band Aid flight to set up arms deals, pales into almost insignificance by comparison!
The Copeland dynasty runs parallel, and comparatively to the equally 'contact/network based' Bush dynasty. Fact!
First off, he definitely writes his own songs. All of 'em. He shares credit with Rhymefest on one song, but he wrote the majority of the album version himself anyways. Moreover, sampling isn't inherently lazy when it's done well (look at DJ Shadow or the Dust Brothers). Kanye West adds quite a bit to his samples to make his OWN instrumentals. Truth be told, I seriously doubt you've actually listened to Kanye West's discography.
Why in the jew would I want to listen to his egotistical album talking about how he thinks that he is the best? Just because some people sample good does not mean he does. They're all awful sounding. Saying he writes his stuff only makes him look worse considering he rhymes the same words together. So think about how the world would be alot better off with out that little prick running his huge mouth off. Remember, good artists still exists.
Okay, you've proven to not have a whole ton of credibility in this conversation, so please understand that I can't possibly continue taking your arguments seriously anymore. Ironically, the biggest "prick" here isn't Kanye West (and to forestall the inevitable: it's not me, either).
Credibility? Believability, don't use big fancy words unless you know what they mean you tool. Kanye blows, just like the rest of the rap genre. His ego irritates me. He's obviously not the biggest prick here, he's not here, you're the jackass. Don't bring that loser up when were on a musical genius' video.
Again, the only "loser" here is you. You're being staggeringly narrowminded. And the name-calling? It's not going to win you any arguments. Why don't you calm down and stop with the baseless allegations. Maybe then we can turn this into a worthwhile debate instead of a worthless bitchfest.
And for the record (again): I didn't bring Kanye West's name into this discussion. I only stood up for his artistic credibility when someone else tried to discredit him. I'd do the same for anyone.
Instead of doing the same for anyone, why don't you do the same to someone who deserves it? The only thing Kanye brought the world was whining. Nice hypocrisy, "You're a loser, name-calling's childish." What are you, two years old? You're so stupid, stop using credibility when you don't know what it means. He's not artistic, I could do what he does, whine and sample. Easy as shit.
He writes his own songs?? Dream on! You´re saying he wrote "Diamonds are Forever" and "Move on up" are you? (To name but two of the songs that he´s "borrowed")
Maybe I am, but sampling is simply NOT song writing. Changing a few lyrics takes very little "talent". If KW didn´t have all these old hits to plunder he´d have no career.
What takes real talent? To write something as incredible as `Move on up´, or to change the words a bit?
Like the way she says "three or four of you ..." and he says well because there are only "three of us". He said it with a straight face but I think he was being sarcastic. Funny.
yeah. oh my god, she should do a bit of research before she interviews stewart copeland. hes a legend. I got kind of shocked at that aswell, three or four of you.... god damn
Joan London (sp?) is awesome personally I think she has a man crush for Stewart Copeland. Lets be honest, I would bag Joan and play "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" on her 1980s body!
Oops. She was doing so well until the bit about 'four or five' of you. Never mind. This was 25 years ago for pete's sake (when I was 12). I'm sure they're all over their differences now (lol).
Stewart Copeland is a great musician - and a lot more genuine than the Geordie tosser (in my humble...)
Typical Copland, at the start 27 seconds in you can hear what is Coplands signature sound, very similare to the work he done on the equalizer. Love it.
Hey that clip was pretty cool! never saw that. I bet that takes him back to the early punk days where the crowds werent incredibly kind... at least he had a cage here, lol
What on earth was that? Was Stewart completely out of his mind? Ha ha... playing drums to lions indeed!!! He should have played them to monkeys or chimpanzees (after all they were our ancestors at one point).
Don't get me wrong, I mean the dudes an awesome drummer and everything but wtf was he doing w/ giraffes and lions? He kind of went off the deep end a little bit. Too much success too fast can be bad.
Well I think he's being honest when he talks of people wanting to visit "the dark continent". It just so happens that he had the wherewithall to do so and, since he's a drummer... working that into it was an obvious connection. Neil Peart of Rush has toured Africa by bicycle at least once and wrote a book about those experiences (The Masked Rider). Hell, I'd *love* to go to Africa myself.
love this man so much!!!!!!

lol yeah what a tard, stewart deserves an interviewer who can at least take the time to read 3 sentences about his group before going on their show.

Oops. She was doing so well until the bit about 'four or five' of you. Never mind. This was 25 years ago for pete's sake (when I was 12). I'm sure they're all over their differences now (lol).
Stewart Copeland is a great musician - and a lot more genuine than the Geordie tosser (in my humble...)

well actually they did reunite and recorded a different version of Don't Stand so close to me called "Don't stand...86"
But I'm sure that wasn't what every one suspected after he said this lol

Typical Copland, at the start 27 seconds in you can hear what is Coplands signature sound, very similare to the work he done on the equalizer. Love it.

Hey that clip was pretty cool! never saw that. I bet that takes him back to the early punk days where the crowds werent incredibly kind... at least he had a cage here, lol

What on earth was that? Was Stewart completely out of his mind? Ha ha... playing drums to lions indeed!!! He should have played them to monkeys or chimpanzees (after all they were our ancestors at one point).

it'd be sweet if he were riding a panther
