@TheDoosh79 You guys see our culture through our TV shows and media, but we get no media or TV shows from England. The only people who are ever British on TV shows are butlers.
The different accents here in America are from Boston, Staton Island, New Jersey, southern states and over to Texas have country drawls or twangs with each deep south state varying the accent only in how much they slur and ramble sentences, and midwest accent.
There is hardly a difference at all between Californian and New York(outside the city) accent, and most of the other states sound the same.
I can understand John Bishop because i talk fluent Geordie (Up north accent) and no-one but my family and friends understand me. That's why on my videos i try my very hardest not to speak Geordie but sometimes i can't help it. My dad talks fluent in Geordie and so does me mam but i have a thick accent
@TheB122sophieandnina i live in sweden and am finnish/english born and i understand every word aswell, maybe because i've just gotten used to the british accent(s)
the practicality in australia is if you are taking the mickey out of the eastern states you have to take a 3-4 day driving trip before you reach one another lol.
British TV is so much better then the US. At least the Talk Shows. We might have better actual shows with episodes, like drama, crude cartoon shows(south park, family guy), and etc.
i tried my best to understand him and i think i actually got the some of the jokes down....he lost me at the teeth part completely lol. dont judge me bt it sometimes is reall hard
I have a friend from York and when we met I remarked "oh that's close to the Scottish border." She replied indignantly that "no, there are three different accents between York and Scotland."
York is sixty miles from Scotland.
John Bishop's Liverpool accent is tough at times but I find Cockney rhyming slang nearly impossible to understand.
For those of you who are British in these comments and are complaining that the German and American actors did not understand John Bishop, I once went to a summer camp in England and kids from England, Scotland and Wales were at it, I was the only person from Ireland there. Not only could they not understand a word I said, some of them did not even know where Ireland was on a map. I understand your annoyance, however, please think before you speak.
what's all that about prof mourning in the title? "could you do an english accent?" is the whole story here!! i felt sorry for him a bit, kind of embarrassing but he did well making fun of it.
phoney/ funny i had a bit of a problem distinguishing too
How come in the year 2011 that I, as an Englishman, know that an American from Austin (for example) doesn't sound anything like an American from Chicago? or that a Californian sounds nothing like a New Yorker?
Yet Americans still think we should all sound like Prince Charles or the Queen? Do they realise that the Royal family is actually German and that only old grannies in their 80s give two fucks about them?
You have to think about how much American culture gets exported to England, vs how much English culture gets exported to America. Of course you know way more about our culture and the way we talk.
@TheDoosh79 You mean a band that broke up 43 years ago is enough of an education for American audiences to recognize the differences between all the different British accents?
@TheDoosh79 Don't stereotype Americans. There are plenty of English folks who think all Americans sound alike, and plenty of Americans who think all Brits sound alike. I am an American who knows that there are plenty of accents throughout the UK, and I find it insulting that you think that just because I'm American, I'm also ignorant. I'm not.
@TheDoosh79 Our tv isn't as saturated in British shows as British television is with American shows. You know our accents because they're present in your media; the same cannot be said for us. It's really a very silly thing to take offense to.
@TheDoosh79 I wish I can see your face when I tell you Kruger is german NOT American. And in the year 2011, an englishman should be able to know a german accent and realize she isn't american when he hears one.
@TaylTube I'm talking about the TheDoosh79 using Diane Kruger's mistake as an example of how Americans think all english people speak like Prince Charles, without realizing that Diane Kruger isn't American and has a mind but obvious german accent.
@TheDoosh79 she's not american, she's german. and all she meant was a neutral english accent. if you weren't native german, you wouldn't understand a bavarian accent either....but I agree, the americans are incredibly naive and ignorant
@TheDoosh79 WTF are you talking about? I'm American and I know how all of those people sound, plus how all those people look... None of Americans think we should sound like the Queen of England.. None of them could give a fuck... We're all human being.. Educate us all, and we will all advance.
This guy is really hilarious! I've watched this video four or fives times now and it still makes me laugh. Diane Kruger is of course drop dead gorgeous as usual.
I dated someone from Nuneaton and I really think once you spend a good week with someone with a different accent, you can understand it quite well. I totally understood the man's accent. I understand that many other countries do not like americans and I can understand why. When most Americans come to their country, they are rude and arrogant. I am not that way and I know many others who are also not. It does not make me any better since my country is bigger than yours. I love other cultures.
If you heard my accent, you'd know what a typical 'English' accent sounds like. I get asked to say 'Daddy, I want another pony' about once everyday...
Can you speak English? She meant can you speak posh. John Bishop tried, bless him.:) But he explained well that there are a plethora of accents in the UK, more there than throughout the entire English speaking world.
Don't know enough about Diane Kruger, but it does sound she's affecting an American accent - I'm assuming that's where she learned her English?
@PompamooseMagique I agree, I'm german and I had to listen twice to it to understand it completely. We only learn the "clean" english and fill it with our own accent, so.... it's really hard to understand what he's saying :D
PERPETUAL what if we cryogenically freeze someone throw them in earth hook them to a mega satellite based internet kept people around for innovation, imagination, and renovations , spreading satellites across the universe always keeping every technology the true knowledge. Maybe we' de master the universe and go on to the next. Nothing could kill it all we need it multi-terrestrial planets, satellites, continous innovation and up keep. IN short the human race could be perpetual.
I don't feel bad that I can't understand people who have really deep accents even though they may be speaking the same language as me. I don't think it makes people stupid, it's just that they don't have an ear for accents. Some people do and some don't.
@pantstelly93 I actually had that experience. Couldn't undertand a word that was said to me. Had to get someone else to interpret. Up in them hills, you might as well be in a foreign country.
@MrFrankMurphy She meant London accent I think or standard British accent that is...like less fancy....like Norton's accent isn't hard to understand but that guy's accent is kind of hard for us Americans to understand..about say 20% we don't..other 80% we do...
@MrFrankMurphy Thats not thick. The "standard british accent" to them is like mine, southern. She didn't mean it quite like that, we all have slip ups.
Its a shame i'm gunna have to murder her... 1st coz she's so dam gorgeous, how can any of us girls compete with that?!... And she's sharin the sofa with john bishop and MATTHEW FOX OMW! (So glad he's on telly again i've missed him) ... But most importantly her boyfriend is JOSHUA JACKSON the hottest man EVER!
Lol, its true that all over Britain the accents are so varied, i have the standard 'english' accent (like the Queen) and I do have trouble with strong Scottish and Irish accents, but don't tend to struggle with the northern English accents (like John's here), West Country can be a pain though!
@Pilkingtube Lol, its not like i need a translater or anything, but its the same with any strong accent that's not your own. I moved to Somerset a few years ago and you listen to some of the older generation or get a particularly strong Bristolian and you do have to pay attention.
I feel like a rare American who can understand most British accents in full, and I roll my eyes at my fellow countrymen who need sub titles to understand people speaking the SAME language as them.
@Phan801 Sadly, it's true.... especially on the news. I think my local news put sub titles up when our local soccer team got a new coach from Scotland. I just sat there with my mouth hanging open when they did that, the sub titles I mean.
@rgrippen an american friend of mine pointed out to another american once that americans speak english, ENGlish as in the language of england. it didn't go down too well but was amuseing to watch lol i can see why some of our accents are hard but so are some american accents but i'd never dream of asking for suptitles or translations. then again i have american relitives and a crisp RP british acent which is very easy to understand
@rgrippen on the contrary, i think british english is very different to american english. not only in terms of accent, but also slang, expressions, intonation, definitions of many words etc. (i have lived in the uk and america). i don't need subtitles but i understand why someone would.
@rgrippen well, I am not from USA but I definitely bend towards the American accent. And just as you I am able to understand pretty much every British accent there is. @rgrippen - As an American who lives in the UK, I find this hard to believe. I have a hard time following Scottish accents and Yorkshire ones too. Especially when they're talking together. Scottish people speak very fast. I'm getting better at it.

@rgrippen same language, different accent. Know you know that in our own country, we need sub titles for Americans speaking English from the south, northeast (brooklyn, New Jersey), Appalachians, etc. Don't be so sensitive lol
@TheHoliday555 well said, im from Mississippi but now I live in Brooklyn. when I got there I couldnt understand them and they couldnt understand me, but it was all love..
@rgrippen she is not american, and your comment is uncall for because in europe people do speak english but with different dialects, so get over yourself
English is not my first language and I can understand John Bishop just fine (have to listen closely though).
