this game licks compared to xenogears.the characters look too childish,the gameplay is dumbed down,the music isnt as good or inspiring and the story isnt nearly as epic.it just feels like xenogears had more effort put into it.
@2frenchfrog That's mainly due to the fact that the creators for Gears had more resources and time to be able to make a game as great as Gears. Even then,the 2nd disc was rushed as you go from story point to story point with no warning. If the original team was still together in the other 2 games,and if Namco wasn't a terrible publisher to work for structure-wise,I'm sure that Saga would've lasted longer than it has.
going by the back of the game (since i take twice as long to do stuff) the game will last you a long time 80 hours accoring to the average and that in a way helps it in the long run compared to games now which sadly usually last 4 hours (im looking at you kane and lynch 2)
I have to remember that there wasn't games like these during the days. The RPGs were all gameplay and little story. This game had loads of cutscenes and that was a big deal back then.

I saw somewhere that this game was voted most pretentious game of 2003...hmm =o I couldn't get into it myself when I got it. The fact episode one can be obtained for 5 bucks could be a sign that it didn't sell well for the reasons why I didn't care for it
@6thhokagephil The price that a used game goes for does not mean a thing. I can get Grand Theft Auto San Andreas for .99 cents. I can get Final Fantasy X for $1.99 American money. It is a supply and demand thing. I know used games that were just horrible that go for up to $500.00 bucks. I thought that XenoSaga 1-3 were amazing games.
@theelusiveone you have a point, but I played the game for about 10 hours and I wasn't having fun =/. So, maybe I missed something, I actually saw a cut scene with one of the villains and momo, and it looked hardcore, so yeah, I'm giving this game one more try.

The game started out real slow....Also this game has tons of cut scenes and a lot of story telling....so maybe it is just not your kind of game....not really that much fighting gameplay going on. I rarely use a walkthrough but I did for this game. If you are not into stuff like sci fi with a religious storyline than it probably wont be the kind of game you will like. Did you ever play Xenogears on the ps1?
@UncleSamLovesAmerica I am in America also. Game collectors pay crazy prices for rare stuff. Just like with baseball cards. I have watched some games go for even over a thousand dollars on e-bay. A brand new mint condition rare copy of the game "Lunar the Silver Star" for the sega cd went for $1,300 last year. Meanwhile you can play it for free on just about any computer with an emulator.

Love this series!!! I played Episode III first, because I had no information on the games, and had no idea they were all directly connected. I'm playing Episode I right now, and it's so good!
There are no games that have this many cutscenes. If there were, those games would probably be called something like Metal Gear Solid, but there aren't any games I know that are like that. None at all.
Why are religious references considered creepy or unusual? I know a lot of people did not like them in this game but its what I enjoyed most about the game.
I really wish I was more into this kind of story. I tried playing this game, and after sitting through my first 15 min cut scene, I was shaking my head in disappointment. It's clearly not a bad game, just far too slow for me. I was even aware of the long cut scenes before hand and had braced myself for the journey but in the end, I lacked the ambition.
Rule 1 of this game: DON'T SKIP CUTSCENES. It's true they're long-but the longer you play the more in-depth the religious philosophical parts get more complicated-some of the philosophy-Nietsch for example-combines with other religious (unusual because Nietsch is atheist) philosophies that normally wouldn't mesh (and is another reason you have to be pretty hardcore concerning those to understand it) and won't make sense if you skip parts.
I've only played Episode 3 (don't hit me), but it's become one of my favorite games.Should I get the first 2? This one looks really good, but I heard that Jr. was the main character of the 2nd one. I like Jr., but I like my Shion, chaos, and KOS-MOS party, and I always use the main character..

Is the storyline for XENSAGA Series Episodes 1 2 3 really that EPIC?!? I've read many reviews hailing the storyline as a masterpiece!! The graphics look generic, voice acting kind of shitty, the battle system looks alright. I know it has themes of religion and philosphy but is it really that EPIC!!?? Should I go out right now and track down all 3 episodes? Is it really a MASTERPIECE?!?!!
as far as the graphics go youre talking about last gen graphics so of course they dont look that great now (although #2 always looked bad and has very annoying battles)

its good to have a strategic approach to the fighting but wow they over did it in 2 and it was as frustrating as it was annoying. seriously if the battles alone make fans of the 1st game stop playing the series the development team must have done something horribly wrong. can you blame people for not playing something thats 2 discs long filled with gameplay that they cant stand. Are you kidding me? There might have been a couple scenes that were 10 minutes but 30? This guy is exagerrating a LOT. Yes, there's tons of cutscenes, but it's because there is tons of amazing storyline to reveal.
THE best RPG series I have ever played. I did think the first one was quite boring, but it was still good. The 2nd was fantastic and was a lot more fast-paced than the first, not to mention interesting. The 3rd was...there are no words to describe it...

I am desperately trying to play this game.... Its wearing on me. The combat seems pretty dull and generally boils down to "shoot" and "punch" The learning curve is high and even at the beginning its extremely easy to die.
I loved this game even though the end is insanely hard for me, the monsters in that city PWNED me and I never ran away from a battle in the game once. I want to play the others but the second one seems to have bad reviews while the third is well acclaimed. There's no way I'm just going to skip the second one and miss out on the story there.
@Aldaraia666 Skip all the side quests in Episode 2. The load times for the battles can be a pain. And did you know that an entire torrent exists of the cut scenes in the game? Xeno2 does not use the same cutscenes as Episode 3. You can get 99% of the story by watching the movies, and then read the walkthrough to get the rest. There is also an Episode 2 script on GameFags.

It reveals so much and the music is amazing, it's far better than the first game. The 3rd one was...oh man...beautiful...amazing...epic...there are no words to describe it! @xenofan1000 1. Only some of the voice actors were changed, and it was only in the English version.
2. The character models were only screwed up for a part of the game. They were not going to develope extremely advanced character models to just use for a part of the game. And the graphics were extremely, extremely advanced for its time.
3. I actually found it far easier than the first game. Once I got the hang of it, it was very fun and strategic. I liked it better than the first game.
@xenofan1000 (c)4. I thought it was amazing. I didn't really care for the battle music, but the regular music was amazing with such songs as "Chase", "Communication Breakdown" and "Lamentation."
4.5 I thought it was pretty much the same quality, except for shion's voice actress who was absolutely awful.
5. 2 disks made the loading time much faster. In the first game (which was longer), on one disk, it would take a lot of time to load.
@Jiyanamiki are you nuts the 1st games graphics looked much better, in 2 they looked like characters that a college student made for a class project. they were pretty flat the faces and the body.
the voice actors that were changed were for the most important characters kosmos, shion, jr, chaos, ziggy, im not sure about albedo though theres probably others i didnt mention. for people that really get attached to a character thats one of the worse things that could happen,.....

Ziggy is played by Richard Epcar in all 3 games, and Jr. was always played by Brianne Siddhall, what do you mean they changed the actors? I hated Shion and KOS-MOS's voice changes (I loved their original VA's), but MOMO's 2nd game voice was very good and kinda grew on me.
@xenofan1000 Ugh, I know! I hated Jin, he had no reason to be there! He was just an annoying guy, he wouldn't let Shion make her own choices, he freaking YELLED at her when she witnessed the death of her parents...But you have to remember that they had Jin in before Episode 2.
I liked Episode 2 more for all the reasons I just stated, AND it explained the backstory of my favorite characters, Jr. and Albedo :) I also found the story more fast-paced (1 kinda bored me).

sigh this would have been the total perfect game if the battle system was real time, or at least better than that... even if only like persona it would be good, too bad about that though, coz im one of the people that cant stand such slow and boring turn based BS's like these ... though i might give it a try because the story and everything definitely sounds worth it.

Just one thing I want to say: music?
again: music, anyone? Seriously, you spent most of the game running around in silence hearing the hum of onboard fan and computer units. Second: the gears are virtually useless, and boss battles are impossible unless you figure out the "secret" to winning.
Third: some REALLY cheesy voice acting coupled with really lame lines seriously hurt the storyline. It's work to play through it. Is it worth it? Maybe, but it's definitely work to get through it.
the music thingy was solved in the 2nd and 3rd games and they have a great soundtrack that IMO makes up for the silence of 1. and about bosses, sorry this isnt super mario where everything you had to do was dodge bowser's fiereball and cast him into the lava.
It's one thing to have hard boss battles, that's fine. But Xenosaga had boss battles where there was some little secret that once discovered could easily kill the boss. Every RPG I've ever played has only used that as an occasional feature for a unique boss or two, not for every one of them.
And despite the addition of music to 2, they screwed up and made the battles suck worse, eliminated shops, and just generally made it like trading a piece of crap for a glass of urine.
i like everything in that sentance except for religion. i dont get how you combine religion with the values of an athiest philosipher. the last game is called: Xenogears-god is dead.
I am christian I don't have a problem with the game it is fiction. I don't have a problem with Atheists either. This game is sweet and RPG fans should play it.
To be honest, Shion is a pretty one-dimensional character whose growth throughout the series is minimal. As a main character, she fails to draw on your emotions, but succeeds in making you feel that the game is too cutesy or overly dramatic at times.
Shion's lackluster performance in battles doesn't help to make her any more special, either. Overall, none of the individual characters seemed all that realistic or interesting, one of the biggest faults of the series; story w/o char. development.
I disagree. It seems to be like she is shy and that because she doesn't show off her personality as much as characters she can be interpereted as a ditz who is more about flash thank intellect, when in her character, according to the series, is pretty much the opposite.
Xenogears is, to date, my #1 game. It is my absolute favorite. Now, I know that Xenosaga isn't exactly a sequel to Xenogears, but, just judging from personal experiences, if I loved Xenogears both in the way it tells its MASSIVE story and in the way the game world flows in general, will there be enough for me to like about Xenosaga that will make the adventure of tracking down a copy worth it?
100%, undeniably, without a question, yes! I've played Xenogears myself, and even have a PSX emulator with the game downloaded on my laptop. But Xenosaga brings it to a completely different level. It raises so many bars at once that it's almost overwhelming at first. so much so that beginning the gameplay is almost tedious at first with all the detail that they put into EVERYTHING. but give it 5 hours of gameplay and you'll be hooked forever. it is to date, the second best RPG
that i've ever played (second only to Shin Megami Tensei, highly recommended BTW). one of the few faults of it though, is also one of it's best qualities. it's the fact that it's so good, that also makes it so rare. after 2 years since starting the trilogy i still havn't been able to finish it due to a lack of the third game, which is the rarest. the second was considered the letdown of the series so if you find the first you can find the second, good luck on the third lol. hope this helped. ^_^
another proof this guy hasnt played xenosaga is that he completely left outside one of the most important characters(or at least more impotant than ziggy and momo)that is chaos.he says that there aren't many battles in this game,well of course there aren`t if u r a sissy that avoids them(its the same as saying that FF8 didnt have many battles after activating enc-none).

chaos is really important, but only in retrospect. He says and does virtually nothing in the first game, and I don't think you're ever forced to play as him.
of course he does.he appears out of thin air when u first meet him(even KOS-MOS with her sophisticated sensors cant find out how he did that)and he talks not revealing anything about himself and gives moral support to all characters.and in the first game they begin to show the connection between KOS-MOS and chaos.true you are not forced to use him but thats because everyone wants to use him.YAY chaos^^i love his lunar seal.

it wasnt until the anime adaptation when I got the story better. And it wasnt too bad.

I've only played Episode 3 (don't hit me), but it's become one of my favorite games.Should I get the first 2? This one looks really good, but I heard that Jr. was the main character of the 2nd one. I like Jr., but I like my Shion, chaos, and KOS-MOS party, and I always use the main character..

Is the storyline for XENSAGA Series Episodes 1 2 3 really that EPIC?!? I've read many reviews hailing the storyline as a masterpiece!! The graphics look generic, voice acting kind of shitty, the battle system looks alright. I know it has themes of religion and philosphy but is it really that EPIC!!?? Should I go out right now and track down all 3 episodes? Is it really a MASTERPIECE?!?!!

its good to have a strategic approach to the fighting but wow they over did it in 2 and it was as frustrating as it was annoying. seriously if the battles alone make fans of the 1st game stop playing the series the development team must have done something horribly wrong. can you blame people for not playing something thats 2 discs long filled with gameplay that they cant stand. (example game, Stuntman)

Are you kidding me? There might have been a couple scenes that were 10 minutes but 30? This guy is exagerrating a LOT. Yes, there's tons of cutscenes, but it's because there is tons of amazing storyline to reveal.
THE best RPG series I have ever played. I did think the first one was quite boring, but it was still good. The 2nd was fantastic and was a lot more fast-paced than the first, not to mention interesting. The 3rd was...there are no words to describe it...

I am desperately trying to play this game.... Its wearing on me. The combat seems pretty dull and generally boils down to "shoot" and "punch" The learning curve is high and even at the beginning its extremely easy to die.

I loved this game even though the end is insanely hard for me, the monsters in that city PWNED me and I never ran away from a battle in the game once. I want to play the others but the second one seems to have bad reviews while the third is well acclaimed. There's no way I'm just going to skip the second one and miss out on the story there.

@Aldaraia666 Skip all the side quests in Episode 2. The load times for the battles can be a pain. And did you know that an entire torrent exists of the cut scenes in the game? Xeno2 does not use the same cutscenes as Episode 3. You can get 99% of the story by watching the movies, and then read the walkthrough to get the rest. There is also an Episode 2 script on GameFags.

1. changed voice actors
2.screwed up the character models made them look extremely generic
3. they over complicated the battles most people got fed up with it so they just gave up on the game or the rest of the series.
4. the music was terrible in comparison of #1
4.5 voice acting again wasnt nearly as good there were strange pauses that happened more often
5. 2 discs of a crappy battle system theres 5.5 reasons to hate the 2nd game

@xenofan1000 1. Only some of the voice actors were changed, and it was only in the English version.
2. The character models were only screwed up for a part of the game. They were not going to develope extremely advanced character models to just use for a part of the game. And the graphics were extremely, extremely advanced for its time.
3. I actually found it far easier than the first game. Once I got the hang of it, it was very fun and strategic. I liked it better than the first game.

@xenofan1000 (c)4. I thought it was amazing. I didn't really care for the battle music, but the regular music was amazing with such songs as "Chase", "Communication Breakdown" and "Lamentation."
4.5 I thought it was pretty much the same quality, except for shion's voice actress who was absolutely awful.
5. 2 disks made the loading time much faster. In the first game (which was longer), on one disk, it would take a lot of time to load.
I liked 2 better than 1, but 3 is still my fav

the voice actors that were changed were for the most important characters kosmos, shion, jr, chaos, ziggy, im not sure about albedo though theres probably others i didnt mention. for people that really get attached to a character thats one of the worse things that could happen,.....

Ziggy is played by Richard Epcar in all 3 games, and Jr. was always played by Brianne Siddhall, what do you mean they changed the actors? I hated Shion and KOS-MOS's voice changes (I loved their original VA's), but MOMO's 2nd game voice was very good and kinda grew on me.

@xenofan1000 Ugh, I know! I hated Jin, he had no reason to be there! He was just an annoying guy, he wouldn't let Shion make her own choices, he freaking YELLED at her when she witnessed the death of her parents...But you have to remember that they had Jin in before Episode 2.
I liked Episode 2 more for all the reasons I just stated, AND it explained the backstory of my favorite characters, Jr. and Albedo :) I also found the story more fast-paced (1 kinda bored me).

Each cut scene can go up to either 5 to 10 to 15 to 30 minutes long. I believe there is almost about 6 hours of cutscenes

Just one thing I want to say: music?
again: music, anyone? Seriously, you spent most of the game running around in silence hearing the hum of onboard fan and computer units. Second: the gears are virtually useless, and boss battles are impossible unless you figure out the "secret" to winning.
Third: some REALLY cheesy voice acting coupled with really lame lines seriously hurt the storyline. It's work to play through it. Is it worth it? Maybe, but it's definitely work to get through it.

It's one thing to have hard boss battles, that's fine. But Xenosaga had boss battles where there was some little secret that once discovered could easily kill the boss. Every RPG I've ever played has only used that as an occasional feature for a unique boss or two, not for every one of them.
And despite the addition of music to 2, they screwed up and made the battles suck worse, eliminated shops, and just generally made it like trading a piece of crap for a glass of urine.

To be honest, Shion is a pretty one-dimensional character whose growth throughout the series is minimal. As a main character, she fails to draw on your emotions, but succeeds in making you feel that the game is too cutesy or overly dramatic at times.
Shion's lackluster performance in battles doesn't help to make her any more special, either. Overall, none of the individual characters seemed all that realistic or interesting, one of the biggest faults of the series; story w/o char. development.

Xenogears is, to date, my #1 game. It is my absolute favorite. Now, I know that Xenosaga isn't exactly a sequel to Xenogears, but, just judging from personal experiences, if I loved Xenogears both in the way it tells its MASSIVE story and in the way the game world flows in general, will there be enough for me to like about Xenosaga that will make the adventure of tracking down a copy worth it?

100%, undeniably, without a question, yes! I've played Xenogears myself, and even have a PSX emulator with the game downloaded on my laptop. But Xenosaga brings it to a completely different level. It raises so many bars at once that it's almost overwhelming at first. so much so that beginning the gameplay is almost tedious at first with all the detail that they put into EVERYTHING. but give it 5 hours of gameplay and you'll be hooked forever. it is to date, the second best RPG

that i've ever played (second only to Shin Megami Tensei, highly recommended BTW). one of the few faults of it though, is also one of it's best qualities. it's the fact that it's so good, that also makes it so rare. after 2 years since starting the trilogy i still havn't been able to finish it due to a lack of the third game, which is the rarest. the second was considered the letdown of the series so if you find the first you can find the second, good luck on the third lol. hope this helped. ^_^

Greg is exaggerating when he says that you have to "sit and watch, nearly as often as you play".
If you do everything in the game, there's about 8x more gameplay than cutscenes.

chaos is really important, but only in retrospect. He says and does virtually nothing in the first game, and I don't think you're ever forced to play as him.
