Issus was the decisive victory. The majority of Darius's elite were destroyed there and at Guagamela, as sexy as the victory seems to us because he was so heavily outnumbered, Alexander was figthing the remnants, the scrapings of the barrel. The war was already won after Issus. Gaugamela was the icing on the cake.
@willlibuster how come rome be the 4th beast when they conquer only a small part of the middle east, trajan extend the roman empire deep into what is today iraq n thats it,he didnt conquer iran/persia,bactria,sogdia,afghanistan n northern india like what alexander did,so middle eastern label alexander as the beast coz he truly completely conquered the whole middle east, rome didnt, they conquer only small part of the middle east, but hey, they conquer north africa n barbarian europe eh.
@MrDelfined "race of wrath" and no, they hated each others guts, persians had attacked Greece earlier Alexander was returning the favour, with interest
Mr kojPRVpocna, what group,in this era, would you affiliate macedonia with if not greece?....what impact would the thracian,or illyrian cultures have on the persians?...none.There would be no great cities like alexandria etc.The greek culture made those cities what they are....Alexander the barbarian ! I understand your anger if you feel you've been robbed of your heritage. Macedonia clearly thought of themselves as greek....and after alexanders success, the greeks didn't mind.
What a great series. TNX a lot. What amazes me the most is the vast amount of territory covered and this series does a good job of subtlely and indirectly showing that. Truly I can now see the "Great" in Alexander the Great.

What is the "race of Roth"(sic?) in Persian culture?
Was there mutual cultural recognition because the Persians and Greek/Macedonians were both Indo-European?

Both, Issus 1st the Gaugamela 2 years later that ended the Persian Empire for good
jjwaltz 2 years ago
@cameraobscura2410 he won the battle at issus, but won the war near guagemala. there's a difference between winning a battle and winning the war.

the Persians must have felt the same way about Alexander as Americans felt about Geronimo. Hes here! there! everywhere! "The Tiger Of The Desert!"
