This game made it so you actually needed to use strategy and tactics, maneuvering your troops, managing equipment, picking battles, finding which tool you have that's best for the issue at hand. In conventional RTS, you just build your base faster then your opponent and gobble up resources to over power people.

so the campaign is tactical yet not strategic? I know for a fact that clicking all your units as one group around the campaign will not work, its all about cover, positioning, and abilities. This reviewer fails to realize what strategy really means.

@popcornpopper2 Stratergic is what your overall plan is, say.... get insane income and just overwhelm your enemies with lots of stuff. or rush somthing dangerous and try to finish it within 7min. tactics are however Cover positioning and abilties, I.E. the tricks you use to give you the edge in a battle but wont really matter to the overall stratergy. so hes quite right in calling it tactical and not very strategic.

This reviewer needs to open his mind a little.. Just because the game breaks with some RTS conventions, this does NOT mean its not a strategy game.. "The strategy is totally missing" - what is this dumbass talking about? The games campaign involves strategy HENCE it is a strategy game! You have RPG elements certainly, but you choose how to kit out your units, you use tactics in battle.. I remember when Dune 2 came out - the first "traditional" RTS but before that there WERE other strategy games!

@imtohotforu its different some my m8tes dont like it because u cannot build a base but u still tech ( lvl 1-3) and every unit lost really hurts you so u must use ability;s like there is no tomorrow and do more ambushes and teamwork then before ....i myself like both games equally because dow 2 is good in its own way and the last stand games u can play with 2 others all having only one commander who lvls up ( and he remains that after the game) getting better gear is just so addictive and fun

I l.ove the game. The campaign on harder difficulties is just insanely good. All about positioning. 1 wrong move and you lose. A right move and you will still be in for a fight, but its never EASY. Especially when bosses can 1 hit a squad :P

i really enjoyed the first wh 40k and i bought wh 40k 2 and i was quit disappointed , because choosing the commander on online campaign force you to using one strategy . ex. if you chose defense you cant change to offense during middle of game..and is no such thing as building the base or any structures(except if you chose defense that your commander can build defense structures) -missing the most . i didn't like it ,but this is only my opinion ,maybe if i will play more i will get use to it

I didnt really enjoy the campaign as much as I liked the skirmish mode. Skirmishes work really well and the new "there is only war" update improved the graphics and gave a load more maps too.

This game is really not for RTS fans... More of people that enjoy the "action rpg" games. No troop building etc etc. Pretty boring game. Played quite a bit of the campaign and that shit is so repetitive it gets boring. The multi-player is pathetic as well state by steveycommentmant. On the original 40k you build buildings but in the sequel, theres no base building except for one "headquarters" where your units come from. I played lots of RTS, and this new style is much more tactical.

You can create squads and customize and upgrade them on the field instead of buying the upgrades from buildings. You only have one building, an HQ that can be upgraded to get better troops anda defensive turret.

The campaign for DoW II is all the mroe realistic. It makes more sense, that troops are sent into the battle, rather than base building. But there is still strategy, about cover, and such. RPGs does not have such. Also Im tired of base building in campaigns. many people is, and Relic knew that.

Dark Crusade I agree but Soulstorm killed Dawn of War so bad that even the producers said it was a big mistake! Dawn Of War 2 however is a worthy sequel and is on the same level as the first dawn of war! DoW 2 multiplayer impressed me by its originality incompare to the 1st DoW, but the one thing whichi hated was - that there are only 4 races to choose... well it may be good to overall balance the game, but it sucks after u allready played DoW1, atleast they could have add a chaos space marines.....(could have make it the same as SM but with diffrent models voices and some units(like terminators to oblitorators))

Dawn of War Soulstorm is better overall. While the base game is imbalanced and has some bugs, there are patches and mods to blance everything out and make it into a great game.

There is even a Tyranid mod out there that has as good, if not better looking models than the ones in DoW II. Combine them with the games already existing armies (Imperial guard, Orks, marines, chaos, eldar, dark eldar, tau, necrons, and sisters of battle) there are also many other units available that you can add.

We play Soulstorm for the multiplayer. I will admit that the campaign was lacking for single player, but for multiplayer there are like 20 different victory objectives now.

One of my favorite ones is Assassinate.  You want to use your commander because it is a powerful unit, but if he dies, you lose, so you have to be careful.

Take and hold is a lot of fun too in an 8 player game :)

That's... really bizarre... to have single-player mode like that.

I guess they had to remove all the playable races to keep it simple, diverse, and graphics awesome. Still, I think they should have kept Tau; they're different enough from the other races to maintain the essence of a completely different race.

I loved the campagin, still doing it now to be honest. Its kick ass, pimping out your guys in an RPG style, then being able to see them reek havoc in an RTS. Multiplayer is cool too, but online you always get a lagger that ruins it.

I've not played this game yet, but to me it looks brilliant. I take it positively, that it is more of an action rpg. Sometimes, i hate multiplayer RTS where you build and rush your troops which is completely senseless. This is more of a tactical game. And it really keeps the action alive. Cheers! :)
