I saw one vid where he explained that he was once given a left handed guitar on a live show with Steve Vai and other guys, and all of them had a chance to solo, so when his turn came, he started talking into his pickups pretending he was playing with his teeth, and came out perfectly !

@JACVA1 he screams onto the strings very close to the pickup, the voice soundwave "impresses" the strings enough to give them the timber of his own voice, while this isn't almost possible with clean sound, with distortion you can clearly hear that scream-like rageous effect. :-)

@youngbito He's screaming into the pick-up on his guitar. I can't remember which, but he either yells into it directly, or holds it up to his throat and yells and the pickups catch the vibrations from his vocal chords

look...my point and tone center around having some sort of objectivity when speaking about musicians. I actually LIKE Gilbert a lot, but for the right reasons. he's an athlete on the axe. he's no clapton, hendrix, page nor van halen. his phrasing is largely mechanical, and, boring.

I gotta agree with johnsone7777. This guy is technically fantastic, but he plays more like a machine than a musician. A good portion of that solo was nothing more than a bunch of arpeggio and scale exercises - stuff that should be reserved for the woodshed, not made into a feature part of the solo. There are technicians, and there are artists, and occasionally there are dudes like EV who are both. In short, this solo lacked creativity and artistry..... yawn!

if you guys like him, great. if you're sensitive, great. if he's a great person, excellent for him and his friends/family.

at the end of the day, he's just a super dextrous guitar player. when he writes a classic song, i'll have the opinion that he is a soulful guitar player.

he's not known for his great influence in the music world. sorry if the truth hurts.

@johnsone7777 I would certainly disagree with Paul being labelled boring. Emotions such as joy, excitement, fear, and wonderment are just as valid as what "soulful" musicians convey. If you don't get Paul, that's your choice. Personally, I find a lot of artists that are gods of "soul" to be extremely boring. Then again, I'm not trolling Eric Clapton (post Cream of course) videos commenting on how boring he is.

Paul Gilbert is ridiculously good, and from pretty much all I've seen of him he seems like a really nice guy (which earns kudos over ego maniacs like Ywngie or Batio). Another player up and coming you might want to check out is Muris Varajic, I think his skills just about put him in the same league as guys like Gilbert, Vai, or Satriani
