I think this video might be from the same show that has Down in the Well in it. Looks to be the same room he plays that one in. That video is on Youtube, and has German overdubbs in the very beginning before he starts playing.
Never seen Tom in this sort of setting before, talking and playing without an audience or interviewer. Very nice intimate feel, with the rural setting etc. Would love to see more of this side of him! There´s a version of this with some interesting monologue- sadly almost unintelligilble behind a german overdub.

You're the one who gave music a colour. All I'm saying is that Michael Jackson isn't singing with the deep voice that you apparently claim to be black.

"They get adopted by other people, their meaning changes there's something very elastic and shape-able about....." For a second I thought he was talking about the kids in the previous scene.
@skywalker909 That right? Makes sense. Know Dyland's covered Leonard Cohen. Under a handful of lyracists have, over time, consistently cut to the heart of our humanity. Group includes all three of these guys... and I don't if there is anybody else in the English language. Was Jacques Brel in French. Died years ago. Maybe others have thoughts.
Even though it's not the shit we normally get shoved into our mouths 24/7 through television and radio, I really fucking love this, and the rest of his music.
Anyone knows where to find the rest of this documentary?
Thanks for posting, that was a great performance. I hope Tom Waits makes a concert movie soon because he hardly ever tours. I don't think he has been to Australia in the past 20 years.
I was driving through the Alleghenies the other day listening to this. Weaving my way through the valleys on slick serpentine roads-- I listened to this over and over. With the colors of October bursting from the trees
Btw, I wasn't mocking his voice, I love him, I wanted him to go on to reveal that the show is a joke and doesn't judge talent, as Waits is more talented than everyone on that show.

Is this sarcastic? cause Tom waits has never been into Autotune things Lil Wayne and T-Pain did, but tom is more maybe about the Tremolo or distorted voice.. AAH!! Anyways Tom has such a beautifull natural voice
@Alexdrod Er, I probably didn't write that very clearly. It should have read; "what is autotune?" It's meant as a genuine question...not some remark about whether Tom uses it....or not. :-)
Right, renderizer01: this song is a traditional spiritual, first recorded by Blind Willie Johnson. And if anyone is looking for Waits influences, you can check that great gospel singer, he just recorded no more than 40 songs and his guitar playing is indescribable, a great slide player (believe me, his singing will sound familiar to you).
When it comes to singers with "grit," I've always preferred Roger Chapman to Rod Stewart. Needless to say, Waits is a great singer and adventurous musician, but a listener could initially be put off by the vocal effects he employs. Not the case here, I'm just saying. Personally, I would't impugn the musical integrity of anyone who might appreciate another interpretation. Otherwise, we'd be listening to some scratchy gospel recording of this song.
This song, I Know I've Been Changed, first appeared on John Hammond's Wicked Grin, an album of Waits interpretations, with Waits singing the second verse on this cut. I'd recommend the album to any Waits fan, especially those who sometimes have a hard time with some of his raspier vocal stylings. Thanks for posting.
Those "fans" who have trouble with Tom's raspier vocal stylings should listen to Rod Stewart or the Beegees-anything but those damn raspy Tom waits vocals:) I personally like Tom when he sounds like rusted drainpipe...

It's an interesting thing, Waits sings about religion because he is trying to mimic the styles of the old bluesmen, who knew very little about religion themselves, but realized that whatever it was, it was better than how they were being treated. So they clung to the bare bones of religion as something to rely on, something to look forward to after their troubles on earth were over. Most of their troubles were because they were black in a white country
I disagree, I think his voice just lends itself naturally for this sort of jive, he sings more fiercly and truthfully in spirit through songs than any other.
