  • This man really knows how to deliver! If you enjoy the music of Tom Waits you should check out my cover of Chocolate Jesus on my channel.

  • This is too much for me!! He is amazing, it feels like time stops when he sing, thanks for posting!

  • what is this from? i want to see the conclusion of the interview after the song.

  • Some people make you feel grateful they're around.

  • Hell yeah!

  • After watching this I know that I have been changed!

  • If religion was more like this song, I'd be in church every time the door's opened.

  • @JLWing77 church. be the church.

  • @JLWing77

    amen brother

  • Love everythin this guy does the most talented guy ever.

  • The laugh at the end is the best, as he emerges back into the universe from wherever he was...

  • @nightfrailer I think that was the best comment I've ever read.

  • Isn't that James Hetfield's dad?

  • @sonictimbo among many others

  • @sonictimbo They look the same but Hetfield is not a genious at all.

  • @sonictimbo They look the same but Hetfield is not a genious at all. Besides that, Hetfield now sings with a voice that resembles my wife's.

  • that guitar tone is gold

  • He is saying I KNOW I"VE been changed.. Not NOAH been changed.. Maybe you were making a joke?

I think this video might be from the same show that has Down in the Well in it. Looks to be the same room he plays that one in. That video is on Youtube, and has German overdubbs in the very beginning before he starts playing.

  • i love this so much "noah been changed" he's so regligios!

  • Simply fabulous.....

  • What is this from? What year? Can you post the entire documentary?

  • Never seen Tom in this sort of setting before, talking and playing without an audience or interviewer. Very nice intimate feel, with the rural setting etc. Would love to see more of this side of him! There´s a version of this with some interesting monologue- sadly almost unintelligilble behind a german overdub.

  • i wish i was one of these kids standing outside, watching him sing through the window.

  • This has Jim Jarmusch written all over it. Is his hand tipped here?

  • Does anyone know what documentary this is from??

  • @panthro555

Freedom Highway - Songs That Shaped a Century/ Songs of Resistance and liberation (2001) by Philip King

I couldn't find it anywhere though. Tell me in case you're more successful ;).

  • like Louis Armstrong and Howlin Wolf meeting in hell..

  • id comment...but..no point! tom said all that needs to be said...shit i just did comment..oh fuck it.... flawless......yet again....gawdamnit tom!!! too fuckin good.

  • music ain't a color, it's a feeling. stupid racist fucks. tom waits is amazing, shush!

  • 5 out of 400 of you missed the "like" button.

  • Stunning - top notch. Shiver me timbers.

  • Thank jeebus X Factor wasnt around when he started - 'you cant sing, your not good boyband material and you can play an instrument - i'm afraid its a no from me' We should build railings round the guy and protect our children from a future world of processed and over hyped pap (sorry pop).

  • @TheAlafan

You annoyed about the white boy singing black?

I got two words for you: Michael Jackson.

    Now be silent fool!

  • @WhyNotTheWhales WTF?... MICHAEL JACKSON what does he have to do with anything.it's not like he sang white music, whatever the fuck that is!

  • @TheAlafan

You're the one who gave music a colour. All I'm saying is that Michael Jackson isn't singing with the deep voice that you apparently claim to be black.

My point was, who cares, black or white, Tom Waits and Michael Jackson are both awesome, no matter what colour their voice is.

  • @WhyNotTheWhales you're right i'm sorry please forgive me.

  • @TheAlafan

    You are hereby forgiven! ;)

  • @WhyNotTheWhales youre fucking retarded michael jackson was black.

  • @ZuparHiero

That was exactly my point actually. Someone complained about Tom Waits' singing being too black.

I'd say Michael Jackson's singing was pretty white, don't you think? Or at least not the typical deep voice, you usually hear from black singers.

Anyway, my point was: Black or white who cares, they're both amazing singers, so who cares what colour they are.

  • @TheAlafan you're racist, STOP IT.

  • @DrunkenPiano you're right,im sorry.please forgive me.

  • The Master at work.

  • His voice - and all his personality - always makes me feel stronger and relaxed.

  • Good or what!

  • "They get adopted by other people, their meaning changes there's something very elastic and shape-able about....." For a second I thought he was talking about the kids in the previous scene.

  • From Tom Waits CD "Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards"

  • Try Reading the comments

  • Does anyone know if this is a clip from a documentary or something?

  • LMFAO on the video of a gospel song people are cussin' and fightin'. the irony of it all. HAHAHHAHA. I love Youtube.

  • Oh & as for the raspy vocal stylings of Tom Waits, his voice in any way, shape or form is magical to me <3

  • Nothing can ever distract me. Once I got Tom Waits in my sights, I'm in a whole other world. Damn he is good.

  • He is Zen......

  • This man is a musical, lyrical, theatrical genius. Even Bob Dylan idolises Waits, hes the greatest song writer of his generation.

  • @skywalker909 That right? Makes sense. Know Dyland's covered Leonard Cohen. Under a handful of lyracists have, over time, consistently cut to the heart of our humanity. Group includes all three of these guys... and I don't if there is anybody else in the English language. Was Jacques Brel in French. Died years ago. Maybe others have thoughts.

  • You Jest, sure*y? Are you a tried and true idiot or are you fami*y?

  • @4111ron Hey, you assholes come on YouTube and take advantage of it as a time to insult people you don't know without risk of a black eye. Fuck off.

  • Right ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @skywalker909 Or any generation, rather.

  • @skywalker909 Of this generation!!!!!

  • @zaperfan Of ANY generation

  • @LadyeXo I agree .Tom reaches into your sole!!!

  • @zaperfan Why would he reach into my shoes?

  • @LadyeXo Maybe to take off the price tag?

  • @zaperfan Rofl. Fantastic answer.

  • this anyone know what the name of the documentary is ??

  • Freedom Highway: Songs that shaped a Century

  • thanks bangaroodong, on my way to buy it now. Thanks for sharing this.

  • A remarkable performance by a truly amazing artist...

  • Not awful, your ears'll mature to it if you give it a chance... :)

His voice is actually very versitile - to prove the point, search for "tom waits take me home" for a gentler version of the voice.

Waits' voice was, in some review, described as a "weapon of theater", and I think that's accurate. And it does grow on you.

  • God what an awful comment

  • @yannis5 hahahahahhaa so true

  • God Sees Through Your Eyes

  • They broke the mold....

  • legendary man of faith

  • I absolutely love Tom Waits and his music. He is so cool and original.

  • Well, many people really like his music, actually.

His voice is a kind of art.

It's different from any of the mainstream voices and it's surely not everybody's cup of tea.

Love him or hate him - but if you hate him, please just stop commenting badly about his work and simply don't listen to him. ;)

  • Even though it's not the shit we normally get shoved into our mouths 24/7 through television and radio, I really fucking love this, and the rest of his music.

Anyone knows where to find the rest of this documentary?

  • @chrystalcullen I bet you that most of the artists you listen to, know of/have in some way been inspired by Tom Waits. So be thankful

  • @chrystalcullen

    i do

  • lol the kid in the window at 1:49 getting his mind blown

  • Thanks for posting, that was a great performance. I hope Tom Waits makes a concert movie soon because he hardly ever tours. I don't think he has been to Australia in the past 20 years.

  • Where the hell is the rest of this performance!? Where do I buy it!?

  • a remarkable performance....

  • hehehehe tommmmm grande tom!!! i got a mysterious attraction for tom!!!

  • I was driving through the Alleghenies the other day listening to this. Weaving my way through the valleys on slick serpentine roads-- I listened to this over and over. With the colors of October bursting from the trees

  • fantastic

  • @seedofvision poetry

  • Waits get life, and expresses life, in a way that few of us can ever experience. I'm glad to have lived while his music was around.

  • Painful

  • I'd love to see him on X Factor.

  • Btw, I wasn't mocking his voice, I love him, I wanted him to go on to reveal that the show is a joke and doesn't judge talent, as Waits is more talented than everyone on that show.

  • I've often thought that the kinds of musicians that leave a lasting impact...are not the kind that would make it through first round judging on any reality show.

  • Will never happen

  • i get the feeling tom gets possessed when he sings so much soul and passion

  • That is one amazing version of that song. Thank you for this

  • ballers,brawlers,bastards great 3 discs.a must have!

  • Second. Great album for any Waits fan.

  • does anybody know this song (and song from here) are available on CD? thank you.

  • its on orphans

    tom waits 3 cd set

  • nice cover

  • I've been changed by this song!

  • If only Tom Waits didn't rely so much on AutoTune.

  • I think he got hooked when he was signed to the same label as Brittney Spears and the Back Street Boys!! LOL

  • what?

  • Lighten up , Francis..... It is called sarcasm..... TW is the greatest bar none. Even Tom would have to laugh at the farsical music scene today.

  • Comment removed

  • Is this sarcastic? cause Tom waits has never been into Autotune things Lil Wayne and T-Pain did, but tom is more maybe about the Tremolo or distorted voice.. AAH!! Anyways Tom has such a beautifull natural voice

  • Come on, now, it should be obvious that I was being ironical. AcrossfromtheAlamo certainly understood.

  • @RODERICKMOLASAR Lol yeah thats what happens when I drink ...

  • @RODERICKMOLASAR what "autotune"

  • @birdstuckinchimney its sarcasm buddy.

    Learn to recognize it :)

  • @Alexdrod Er, I probably didn't write that very clearly. It should have read; "what is autotune?" It's meant as a genuine question...not some remark about whether Tom uses it....or not. :-)

  • @RODERICKMOLASAR What?! No AutoTune for the Waits!

  • @PotatoManTada I wasn't certain if that was sarcasm or not either

  • Staying in tune, hitting the notes, screw that, this is how you sing, give it some soul.

  • is this from a docco if so where from?

  • Right, renderizer01: this song is a traditional spiritual, first recorded by Blind Willie Johnson. And if anyone is looking for Waits influences, you can check that great gospel singer, he just recorded no more than 40 songs and his guitar playing is indescribable, a great slide player (believe me, his singing will sound familiar to you).

  • that is too much soul for one man alone.

  • EelsThe, me too. If not him, something very simular.

  • Tom Waits is the man I want to be.

  • The two kids looking through the window. Such a subtle and powerful image.

  • he is motherfucking genious!~

  • what a voice!!!!

  • Goes to show you, there's nothing like a fresh diaper....

  • hahaha that's hilarious!

  • Tom, I' ve been changed... by this song : ) Thanks... breathtaking...

  • tom waits changed my life. no lie.

  • Son house............thats all i can say about this man, they are the only two people ive heard who can convey so much feeling with so little.

  • He kinda looks like James Hetfield from Metallica in this video. I know they're nothing alike, of course - he just reminded me of him in appearance.

  • Anything that this man sings....we listen. A bonefide genius!

  • Meet ya up at the house, bro :)

  • I find this performance to be incredibly moving. I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling this way. Thanks for posting it.

  • frankly, I dig the stuff that drives a few others off. It's a way of filtering your company.

  • When it comes to singers with "grit," I've always preferred Roger Chapman to Rod Stewart. Needless to say, Waits is a great singer and adventurous musician, but a listener could initially be put off by the vocal effects he employs. Not the case here, I'm just saying. Personally, I would't impugn the musical integrity of anyone who might appreciate another interpretation. Otherwise, we'd be listening to some scratchy gospel recording of this song.

  • This song, I Know I've Been Changed, first appeared on John Hammond's Wicked Grin, an album of Waits interpretations, with Waits singing the second verse on this cut. I'd recommend the album to any Waits fan, especially those who sometimes have a hard time with some of his raspier vocal stylings. Thanks for posting.

  • Those "fans" who have trouble with Tom's raspier vocal stylings should listen to Rod Stewart or the Beegees-anything but those damn raspy Tom waits vocals:) I personally like Tom when he sounds like rusted drainpipe...

  • The lord is not in the bible... nor in that building with a cross at the bottom of your street ... He's in all of us.... the battle between to be and do good or evil is the lord himself.... collective collective consciousness......He's singing aboutt the demons and the peace we all hope to someday find.... Thats my opinion anyway ..

  • What's that you're saying? Music has to be complex (whatever that means) to be good? Now, that's what I call ignorant. Come down...

  • Is this from a dvd or something? I would love to have this.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm afraid there is only a couple of bootlegged live recordings of this one. Go track 'em down!

  • This is on Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards

    Number 8

  • Comment removed

  • Damn me...you're right...didn't even think of it!

  • I defy anyone to try to cover this. Only Tom can do Tom's songs!

  • Well, Waits didn't write this song...it's a traditional piece - it's been around much longer.

  • The claim could be made that Tom has made it his own. What a breathtaking performance.

  • this is off the hook. WOW.

  • tom wait grew up in church...

when you ask JESUS in to your heart

you get filled with the HOLY GHOST

and are given a new life

and nothing is ever the same...

  • The book that enlightened me was "The Late Great Planet Earth," by Hal Lindsey.

  • Did he say "I've been changed," or "I should be chained(up)?"

  • Thats his experience, his testimony...it's personal and doesn't come from a book. God is spiritually discerned. God cannot be contacted by the intellect or mind, only the spirit which contain the soul(your mind, will, and emotions).

  • It's an interesting thing, Waits sings about religion because he is trying to mimic the styles of the old bluesmen, who knew very little about religion themselves, but realized that whatever it was, it was better than how they were being treated. So they clung to the bare bones of religion as something to rely on, something to look forward to after their troubles on earth were over. Most of their troubles were because they were black in a white country

  • I disagree, I think his voice just lends itself naturally for this sort of jive, he sings more fiercly and truthfully in spirit through songs than any other.

old bluesmen or other folks who sing truly sing that way not because of a concept or idea, but it rolls of their tongue naturally.
