@chickenboy808 In an earlier post, I mentioned that I understood why "duts" are used, used them in lines that I worked, and called them out in lines that I marched. I understand how they in effect serve as a metronome for the entire corps. I just feel that a world class corps has had enough rehearsals on the same show that an "external metronome" shouldn't be necessary in late July, early August.
Hey man, I'm center snare at my high school right now and I would love to be able to play in dci. But our high school plays matched and I've never been taught traditional. I'm entering my junior year. Any advice for learning traditional? Do you think I have enough time to master it? How hard is it to learn?
Btw, I like your 2011 show I saw it in Olathe! Thanks
@stephws94 actually those are lightest and most comfortable harnesses out there. The corps I'm with, just switched over to pearl from dynasty this year, dynasty has great drums( when tuned right) but their harnesses are heavy as hell. So no this new pearl harnesses aren't crappy.
@olledowerdna, you and BD are pretty amazing frickin drummers. doing DCI sounds so much better than it did before. just reading music is not one of my big specialties O_O
Great Stuff. But I would "tick" for every 10 "duts" if I could. Drumlines at this level shouldn't need human metronomes no matter how difficult M&M is. I understand the use of them ..marched in lines where they were used, but always felt they were unecessary, especially by finals night. Whose dropping time at this level?
@olledowerdna I understand they benefit the entire corps and I am sort of for them in a rehearsal situation..especially early in the year. I just feel that as many times as you run through a show during the season, that internal timing should be there eventually.....definitely by the end of the year.
@Offbeat1000 The snare line runs the show, The Drum Major watches there feet for tempo, so the duts are more of a way of turning the whole line into one brain. theres a certain bond between a line that it gets to the point where you start walking in step down the street with each other without knowing it. So long live the duts" delivering clean beats and mean lines for years!
@Offbeat1000 yeah its for everyone around the drumline. The drumlines job is not only to provide cool sounds and visuals but also to keep everyone else in time
I will be honest, I dislike your shows, but not you as a corps. Especially this show. However, I will probably not watch your show again with the bad feelings I had. This perspective shines new light on you guys for me.
I have a few questions also:
Was this finals week?
Why'd you guys switch to pearl?, and
On average, how long do you guys rehearse a day?
Thanks, and I hope you make center snare next year.
very very very cool man!!! I wish every corps would do something like this. But it's very cool to see one of the most technical lines out there do something showing the whole process of being on field.
yeah bass!!! haha i was bass 2 in my highschool season this year so yeah. silver falcon band, came first at every competition, check us out!!!! haha and that was awesome!!!!
I'm not that big of a BD fan, I won't lie, but watching this video and reading some of the comments I have to admit you guys did deserve the rings you all got and I have to admit you guys impressed me. Seeing how hard you guys work just inspires all of us to go to corp.
@Adventsky1 Thank you! I hope this video inspires everyone to go march ANY CORPS. Drum Corps in general is awesome and I wanted to give people a first person view of my show from 2010.
You don't have to march BD or even like us for that matter.....JUST GO MARCH SOMEWHERE! :)
holy balls dude, BD has there own private feild? i gotta walk a mile with my drum on after school to a public park for practice. while we have cross country and football dudes jog around us.
@stickflip723 - For pre-tour rehearsals yes. The Blue Devils practice at MARS- their practice facility consisting of 2 fields, bleachers, and a wooden "press box" with a shed beneath. this video was taken during the finals day rehearsal this year at the Indianapolis Colts practice facility, where they rehearsed most that week.
@stickflip723 i thought so too, but alas, it is not, it is pretty similar, but its actually blue devils "legend of the one eyed sailor" i felt dumb when i found out, lol
I only have flashes of memory of final runs with the Blue Devils. You will have the whole thing for life......That is what makes this a very cool thing. Congrats on your win! Do It Up Devils!!!
Great Job! I say I would've done this 20 years ago too but it would've been difficult to play the Mellophone and hold the monster of a VHS camera on my shoulder at the same time. lol
@metalmonkee621 yeah, you tend to get a lot of friends in a drum corps when you march in the corps with them. unless you were injured during the season, you never saw this show from the front. and since you replied to the tubas comment so quickly, i'm going to go out on a limb and say you marched tuba.
@4PlagalCadence1 I have many friends in blue devils, crossmen, carolina crown, cavaliers, cadets, santa clara vanguard, and bluecoats. Now I didnt march all of those corps did i? No, I've marched in two of them- but you've gotta love the incredible networking tool that is DCI.
Yes i marched the line this summer, and "how would I know?"
There were a few points, mostly late season, where I was not in during a rep (restroom break etc) and I would come back in front. I did hear the rest of them
@metalmonkee621 no offense, but coming back to the front sideline after a bathroom break isn't the same as hearing them from the 600 level of Lucas Oil. i don't mean to insult your season or anything - you know, congrats and all that - but really. not the same.
@metalmonkee621 and you want to know how awesome of a network DCI is? Check this out: you say you marched in 2 of those corps. Since very, very few people hop around in top-7 corps, i'll assume that the other corps you marched was crossmen. And if you're a tuba player who marched Crossmen and then BD, i know you're either Morgan or London, and we probably have a lot of friends in common.
@metalmonkee621 Is Justis the one at Crown? I think I've heard of him from my friends at Eastman (I already graduated). apparently the dude's got some chops, though.

So i think you can march as many years, but every year you would have to re-audition and such.

@Offbeat1000 duts are for the entire corps....not just the drum line.
music ensemble = everything.
good ensemble = good visual pacing, easier for the guard to do work at the correct tempos...drill is easier to do at correct tempos.
